Looks nice, plays flashy, but succumbs to Treasureshit. Still one of their better games.

Never played a Treasure game before? They almost always hit a point where they drop all momentum to do some dumb gimmick like a board game, a math quiz or some other stupid shit instead of fun gameplay.

That's what you meant, of all things? I completely forgot that was even a feature in GSH because it's such a non-entity. I'm pretty sure that doesn't even exist in Alien Soldier if not others so that complaint doesn't even really hold up to scrutiny.

Iirc there are 5 levels in gunstar heroes.
The first run and gun level
            The airplane turret level
On rails boss rush 7 force
            The board game level
            The final boss.

The best part of the game, the run and gun segments, are less then 1/5 of the full experience.

Granted it's been like 10 years since I've thought about this game.

There is the level where you rescue yellow and the moon level as well as the penultimate level which is a boss gauntlet against all the previous bosses in new mechs. Interesting that all the "gimmick" levels are the ones you remember while the most normal run and gun levels are the ones you forget.

That's why Alien Soldier is the best Treasure game

Treasure defenders do the same thing Nintendo fans do. "Oh I didn't even remember the flaw, must not have been a big deal!" Always afraid to discuss the games they love in any serious capacity, can only lavish it with praise no matter how hollow. How fricking boring. No wonder they're seen as posers.

Alright, what's a comparable run and gun game that doesn't fall into the same trap with gimmick levels?

Great music and sound design, great visuals, fast action with multiple weapon types and options including multiple melee moves, fun enemies and bosses, plenty of variety, huge amount of polish. Not too long. It's got everything.

I got this as a kid from toys r us for 19.99 on deep sale and didn't really like it. I found out years later it's le hidden gem and bought it on Xbox 360 again and still didn't really like it. Idk man but people overrate treasure games. I was even a bit if a Sega genesis fanboy so I'd have reason to hype it

It's fairly set piece heavy and some weapon combinations break the game in half. I like it but would rather play Hard Cops tbqh (fairly sure that was made by the devs that would later form Treasure, actually).

The only bad part of Gunstar Heroes is that shmup section. Amazingly Treasure would go on to make three great shmups but you'd never guess with that shitty section.

It's a shame they doubled down on the gimmick levels for the GBA sequel, what little of the game that was actually the core gameplay was fun.

that's bogus man. Contra has the 3D levels and Super Contra has the top-down levels and Metal Slug has vehicles and shmup levels. What's so bad about a little variety?

          >what's a comparable run and gun game that doesn't fall into the same trap with gimmick levels?
Here's the thing, gimmick levels were a mainstay of the genre. Contra had the top down sections, numerous games had an auto scroll speeder/bike section and if a game didn't have something like that it probably had a shmup section. You have to remember devs were gamers back then. Everybody loved to play different games and if someone was working on a run & gun but liked Gradius a lot they might just decide to put a shmup level in the game. Especially if they wanted to make a shmup but they were told there isn't interest in shmups anymore, platformers were the hot thing.

Anyway, go play Shinobi 3. It's incredible what you can do in that game given when it was released. Dive kicks, double jumps, dashing attacks, slides, wall jumps, wall clinging and your default attack is an ammo based projectile. Joe Musashi's moveset at the start of the game is like a fully upgraded Samus or Mega Man X.

Mindsets like this is why the final boss of the DMC1 was a fricking Space Harrier/Afterburner clone of all fricking things, that shit should've been left behind to die in the arcade era.
