A lot of single player content.
You can play as the most awesome looking Link design yet (and since).

Just thumping orchestrated bangers. Music in games is so shot now. Not just in composition but quality. The whole sound design philosophy is a mess. Take Doom vs Doom 2016. Doom has memorable tracks you can hum. Lots of them. You can clearly hear monsters the loud gun sounds and the music all at once. Clearly discernible. Now in 2016 it’s a blended mess music is indecipherable metal garbage blaring. Guns sound like mouse farts and monster sounds are all the same.

That is my one gripe with DOOM 2016. The atrocious so called music. Its just noise, only the dumbest of philistines could pretend to enjoy it.

One of the best fighting game.

for me it was Taki and playing the grunt sound effect from her getting hit

This was the peak of console gaming, zoomers will never know that feel.

Very very good Tekken With Weppins game with oodles of singleplayer content to do
Link's cameo crossover satisfied everybody that thought they were getting the SpaceWorld tech-demo and instead got Wind Waker (I am still in belief that this is a fundamentally weird camp of people, but they existed and still do exist)
Link's moveset was good enough that it popped up as the Sword & Shield discipline for create-a-characters in the next game with the Zelda references removed

Link being a guest character was a pretty big deal for the time. The game outside of the guest characters was really fun too though.

I will never understand how SC isn't more popular. With all the cool guest characters in each game, and weapons you'd think it would have more appeal than Tekken's cast. When I first started playing each game Tekken felt samey and the movement felt like shit, but SC was fluid and everyone felt unique right out the gate. I guess brand recognition goes a long way, but its still disappointing.

Soul Calibur 2 released at the sweet spot where Tekken fumbled with 4 which changed the fighting mechanics and combat pacing and wasn't very popular. They had a very solid game iterating from 1 that was already one of the highest selling games on the system.
Later they released Tekken 5 which had infinite production values for the time and was a massive fricking hit because it rode the wave of "being a true next gen successor to tekken 3", which was probably the most massive 3D fighting game yet.
Soul Calibur 3 released AFTER Tekken 5 and didn't really improve upon the formula that much, it was a very continuist sequel. A good sequel, but the 3D fighting game space was completely overtaken by tekken 5.
And then Soul Calibur 4, which is a pile of trash with no content happened and killed the series forever.
        Tekken has remained strong since.

Note that both ips are managed by Namco (so they are not interested in competing with themselves) and with the way the industry has been funneling resources due to development costs means nobody invests in IPs that don't make a gorillion bucks anymore. Making Soul Calibur look like a third rate game compared to Tekken.
It's a series of unfortunate events and domino effect. Shit just happens sometimes, what can you do.

Soul Calibur 4 was pretty great. I never understood the hate. It was extremely good looking for the time. Had very responsive combat, great character designs (especially the busty waifus), great music,.great stages. You sound like nostalgia clouds your mind. Its better than the previous ones in alot of ways.

Looked bad to me back then even on day 1, and still looks bad. Everyone had the butterface syndrome.
The game still had literally no content besides the 60 tower challenge which was just a barebones menu, especially coming from 3 that had a densely packed single player experience.
The star wars characters also left a bad taste in the mouth of many players at the time.

SC2 was crazy popular and sold well on all 3 systems.
Then they released the underwhelming SC3 and locked it only to the PS2, then the underwhelming SC4... and 5.... and....
Namco slowly killed the series by chasing to many gimmicks till the core audience was gone.

Tekken has an overarching story with main characters that people like more(Mishima family, devil gene shit), gameplay that people like more (the way strings/combos work, no 8 way run so no instantly going from side to another making dodging and whiff punishing feel extra good and "uh oh you mashed like a moron time for a loud boom and you to give me 1/3 of your health"), mostly punching and kicking instead of pure weapons that most people like more, and characters that people just like more such as Bryan, Paul, Kazuya, Jin and King.

Does SC2 have a better and more varied selection of weapons for each character? Been playing SC3 recently and I found the weapons to be lacking. I remember SC2 having more effects per weapons and overall stronger effects too such as having passive health drain on opponent. And each character having both a Soul Caliber and a Soul Edge weapon.
The past couple weeks I played about 20 hours of SC3 on PCSX2. Wanna play 2 again as well but I am not sure if I wanna figure out a Nintendo emulator to play the Gamecube version (I grew up with that version and still own it. Also, Link has the best weapons according to a GameFAQs comparison guide). Or try to figure out a PS3/Xbox emulator to play the remaster and 4+ (I have only ever played 2, 3, and then 6 since it came to PC. 6 is kinda trash and already a dead game before I got it). Are the PS1, PSP port, and Dreamcast games worth emulating?
Can someone please spoonfeed me on where to get PS3 game patches and DLC for emulator?

Yes, SC2 weapons were kino. The only sad point is that you have to unlock all of them before having fun with your friends.

sc3 has less weapons per characters then 2 but those weapons are more unique with a lot more weapons that do a lot of unique stuff instead of "this is the one that does and takes less damage" copypasted over the entire roster - instead you would have a weapon that does and takes less damage but also sometimes you just refuse to get kocked out of the ring or something.

I have never played SCIII, so I don't know. But SCII has very interesting weapons. Astaroth can use a scythe without guards but that heals him when he hits the enemy. But I agree, a lot of weapons are similar. But some of them have a true identity.

I got Soul Calibur II because i saw fricking Link on the cover, that's pretty much it. And while I think it's a legit good game, I never had an incentive to main other characters than Link. Got Soul Calibur VI recently, but it without Link It just failed to kept me playing it

I was the same but eventually decided that I should at least try the other character and now I love most of the cast as much as I do Link. Cervantes and Cassandra will always be my go to SC mains.

Either a flramebait post or a tourneygay butthurt that everyone favored Link as the guest character despite that he's very low tier in competitive, confirming that most people continue to not give a shit about esports homosexualry. He was also the only guest character that even kinda fit into the setting compared to Spawn and Heihachi. That said, my favorite characters were Nightmare and Mitsurugi anyway. Those 2 + Link were was my setup for team battles mode.

unironically the peak of simple to learn but hard to master fighting game design. if you just wanna mash poke poke poke as raphael or kilik with the lads you can do that and it feels intuitive and you have a great time due to the amazing for the time production value, but then if you wanna start getting more into the game you have all the crazy intricacies of the movement you can do that too, this is one of the few fighting games with really good movement where you need to do some glitch or elaborate series of cancels in order to go fast.

soul calibur 3 is pretty great but they spent too much time stuffing it with shitloads of content and forgot to actually check if the game isn't full of bugs and weird balance, then the HD soul calibur games took turns being too simple pissing off the hardcore players or too complicated pissing off the casuals so the series devolved into "that game where you make funny custom characters that a few french people play seriously"

by your own image gamecube only barely outsold the PS2 version, and the gamecube had literally no fighting games besides soul calibur 2 or melee while the PS2 had dozens including soul caliburs sister series tekken

they made SC3 ps2 exclusive because the game was twice as big as the previous game and it wouldn't have fit on the 1.6 gig gamecube minidisks. they could've made an xbox port but lol
