It's basically baby's first Gauntlet. What's worse is that Blizzard didn't even make Diablo, they just bought the studio and IP that made it. Blizzard has not once ever made an original game or idea.

    Talking specifically about d2
It has reasonably intricate mechanics, most of which are hidden from the player
It has room for the player to play in cared ways from facerolling to using multiple hotkeys and skills
It has just enough lore to get you going without doing too much with it
It has class variety and stands in reasonable balance between multiple games
    It pleases the loot autism
It has a a striking and memorable enough visual aesthetic
It came out at just the right time to take advantage of online features
There's a reason why it spawned copycats, because it manages to please multiple kinds of people at the same time

      Also
The sound design is goated, from spells to potions to voice acting
      The soundtrack is a masterpiece
The atmosphere is engrossing as a result, also the visuals you mentioned
It just oozes both quality and soul, and when the gameplay systems on top are as solid as they are it's not hard to understand why it's still played to this day despite the gaps in content

The original Diablo invented a sub-genre of action RPGs which are now the primary games that are brought up when discussing ARPGs. It had excellent production values, and was extremely replayable both due to the random generation of the dungeon as well as being one of the early online games to make a big splash. While there were early MMOs at the time, they requried a subscription fee, while Diablo had online play for free. It also supported LAN play and, like some other Blizzard games, allowed you to install spawn copies of the game that were essentially shareware and gave a lot of people the chance to try it out.

Diablo II took the first game and added "more." More to everything. More classes, higher production values, more stuff to do. It also greatly improved on the combat by adding a lot of dynamic skills to use. It is still primitive by modern standards, and resource generation is a huge pain in the dick because you constantly have to drink potions... which means you also need to constantly pick up and sort potions. Diablo II came out during a time when online gaming was really becoming mainstream, and hit it big.

Diablo III again improved on the combat, making everything faster, and greatly increasing QoL features by making resource generation not such a big deal, as well as allowing players to respec whenever they wanted, with every skill having four variants. It was hindered greatly by a bad launch, with a shitty auction house implimented into the game that basically short-circuited the gameplay loop. Its atmosphere and story were also dogshit by Diablo standards. The expansion removed the auction house and added Adventure Mode which made the game much better, but by then it had received serious competition from the free-to-play Path of Exile.

The first two games get so much praise and an enduring fanbase because they were pioneers for the genre and for online gaming in general.

If i had to speculate, something about the team that made d2/lod being incorporated into others. WoW was the new thing and all dev focus went there. essentially what you had left were people like Jay Wilson who were told that the next Diablo title that's made needs to tick certain boxes, chief among those being some kind of monetization (rm auction house)
the same issues that permeate Diablo 4 as well as 3 is that, at a fundamental level, they aren't games that feel like they were made by passionate nerds for other nerds. They are committee created for focus groups and intended to milk players via battlepasses and real money cosmetics
it's the same reason why modern WoW feels nothing like classic Vanilla . We're seeing a resurgence of old school games that "did it right" (diablo 2 resurrected, Classic WoW, oldschool runescape etc)

and yet people love them. they are better than 99% of the shit that gets released now
Classic WoW proved that people want this kind of game and prefer it over retail, regardless of how badly it was and has been handled by Blizzard. D2R was an overwhelming success and replicates the original almost perfectly, while giving it a fresh coat of paint. OS:RS receives continuous development from a seemingly passionate dev team
yeah its not ideal but it could be the start of a shift in the industry where you actually need to make enjoyable games that reflect your passion for the work you do . maybe

Damn bro I'm not sure if this is the same person but this is pretty spot-on. The RMAH in D3 really killed my love for Blizzard/Diablo entirely. Like you said, they don't feel like games made by nerds for nerds. They just feel like profit machines geared toward the most casual players imaginable. Sad shit. D1 and D2 just hit differently too, at a time (like you said) online gaming was becoming big. Now everything needs loot boxes, MTX, battle passes. Shit sucks.

Diablo 3 was cool, I played it like a year after it came out so the auction house fiasco didn't sour me. I liked sets, they changed the gameplay and each character had enough to mix n match sets and uniques. I might be biased though, pet classes with buff and debuff power are my favorite and while witch doctor can play on any difficulty with the right gear d2 necro eventually had to lay off pure skellies and debuffs.
