This, it takes a real man to admit despite the disappointment, which in hindsight is more of a compliment of NV than a slight at FO4, I fricking love Fallout 4.
People act like it's terrible, but you should ask these people why Starfield was so disappointing

                Anonymous

It is a mod that plays the worst part of the game for you. The settlements are all on auto pilot and if you can do as little or as much as you want.

It is the first mod of Bethesda's history that actually improves a game.
The downside is it is rather large and has issues. The mod author and his team has put in superhuman effort in making it as good as it possibly can be.

Mod authors could learn a great deal from this mod. Modding might actually become more widespread.

                >The downside is it is rather large and has issues.
That's Fallout 4s version of Creation that's the problem. The pre-combines have some settlements in the same quadrant. It's why Sim Settlements has a big crash problem with Sanctuary, Abernathy Farm and Red Rocket.

They called it the triangle of doom. Is that and Bostons issues still a thing on the newer consoles?

                Anonymous

Yes, but the Fallout 4 Update should fix that, since they fixed the pre-combines in Starfield.

                Anonymous

I just had the mod build minimalist settlements. As long as you don't go nuts you are ok.
If you broke a precombine you were fricked though. I think that is why Fallout 4 mods got a bad rap. Modders had no idea they were breaking the game.

                Literally amateur hour.

                >Whys it so popular and hows it work?
You can assign things to npcs to build shit for you while you're not there and you can assign a mayor to look over your settlement while you're not there.

tldr, you no longer have to micromanage settlements anymore and the quest associated with the settlements are more fleshed out.

Bethesda liked it so much that they started advertising it themselves.

The problem is that the Commonwealth still has plenty of buildings and towns still intact but are still abandoned.

            i watched this video today

for anyone who is too lazy to check it out, it's basically one of the guys who created some of the best locations in recent bethesda games and then left the company early after fallout 76 came out
this video was mostly about how he's working on a new game but he did talk about bethesda and he said that
            >old bethesda was pretty small and a tight community
            >old development style was employees being told to do "what they wanted" which lead to them putting their heart into it
            fastforward to fallout 4 era
            >bethesda hired a ton of new people and the company became huge
            >most new employees were inexperienced or at the very least new to the company so they couldn't be trusted to just figure shit out on their own
            >with now hundreds of people there needed to be organization but that turned into endless meetings
            >he implies that he spent so much time in meetings during the dev of fallout 76 that he barely had time to work on the game so he chose to have a much smaller position in the starfield development team, but they would still call him in for meetings that were completely irrelevant
            >tl;dr bethesda got bloated with new hires and a ton of hr that made it unbearable to work there and turned a game company into a meeting company

As someone with 500 hours in vanilla oblivion, 100 in vanilla FO3, and 200-300 in vanilla Skyrim: I didn't get much playtime out of FO4. Basically just explored the full map and stopped playing.

that's an insane thing to say because this is infinitely more fun to explore
at least, if you are exploring while playing it the proper way, i could see why mindless exploration and constantly being forced into battles might be boring
one thing i dislike about fallout 3 and fallout 4 is that bethesda force you into combat nonstop whereas i feel in skyrim/oblivion/morrowind you can travel halfway across the map without encountering an enemy if you just follow the road

i tried it before a few years ago and got mad but now life has beaten me down with bad movies, bad shows, bad anime, and bad games
suddenly 4 dialogue choices that all mean the same and lead to the same result don't seem so bad anymore
also while the writing, quests, setting, etc. is vastly superior in new vegas, fallout 4's companions are sooooooooo much better it's insane
