I fricking hate how they turned rotom into a gimmickshit mascot.

I fricking hate how they turned rotom into a gimmickshit mascot. Rotom was based in gens 4 and 5, with its implied backstory, the fact that it's a ghost living in a haunted house and can become material by possessing electronics, that was such a good idea for a unique monster.
But now apparently there's like a thousand of them for some reason and they're friendly towards humans helping them with their dex etc, just frick off dude. Pokemon is the biggest IP in the world yet for some fricking reason they felt like they needed to ripoff some literalwho fotm franchise? The frick?

I do admit it's odd that Rotom went from something that felt extremely rare that was only found in remote areas to something commonly integrated into society.

I mentioned gen 5 because it's the gen that actually removed Rotom's ghost type for its alternate forms, replacing it with a new type that depends on the form. That was logical and an extension of Rotom's characteristics of becoming material once it possesses something.

What's weird to me is how future models lobotomized Rotom.

Feel its mostly due to the change in function, rotomdex being a dedicated bottom screen just lends itself better starting to talk without being too distracted.

Now its more of an aesthetic choice to make cellphones more unique to the series. I'll always miss the intricate dodads the older devices were though.

As a Rotom Enjoyer, I'm actually thrilled that its become more of a mascot. Surprisingly though, there's not a TON of merch all things considered, even though the phone/dex are pretty integrated into the series now. It is nice to see more base Rotom stuff (Whats Your Charm Point? line of merch in Japan feature him as the most recent release!)

Rotom is actually Ishihara's favorite Pokemon, and probably a big reason why it's gotten a bit of a push (consider, probably why Poliwhirl was pushed in the US at the beginning of Pokemania)

As for Rotom being unique- I think originally it was designed to be some kind of legendary/one of a kind Pokemon. It uses the Legendary encounter music in DP, and an old Pokemon mailbag letter did specifically say it was Legendary, but that's totally been retconned. Charon's story still works as he was the first to DISCOVER Rotom and name it, but every piece of Pokemon media implies there are more (and they do the same with Legendaries anyways so the point is moot)

      >Charon's story still works as he was the first to DISCOVER Rotom and name it
Rei/Akari in Pokemon Legends Arceus makes that an interesting stable paradox as they most likely only knew to call Rotom that because they come from a time after Charon named it but that technically makes Rei/Akari/Professor Laventon the first to name it. Whoever uncovers Professor Laventon's pokedex in the modern age is going to be extremely bewildered in general, kek

Isn't it implied that Charon isn't the one who discovered Rotom? His entry begins with "It was by pure chance that I obtained information about the Pokémon Rotom.", which is not something you would write if you discovered something for the first time.
