I think one of the things they'd definitely focus on for a sequel would be letting you fully play as all four characters since I saw it thrown around often on twitter from Japanese players when they put out the post-release feedback survey. In that case, they might have to extend the Devoted Heart mechanic so that everyone can kiss everyone else instead of just Tsumugi.
I'm not much of a harem person but I do feel like all the girls do "deserve her" so to speak so I don't know.

Nah, they're exactly the same brand of low budget musou-lite hack and slash with the same kind of level design, structure and progression.
Samurai Maiden's combat is much less of a musou than Senran Kagura and the levels are also much more based around platforming and traversal gimmicks than arenas with dozens of mobs connected by hallways like SK.

So? The game is still a low-budget hack and slash musou-lite. Samurai Maiden has the same structure as Valkyrie Drive, and Valkyrie Drive was almost identical from its Senran Kagura cousins.

I'm the VD dude and they pretty much don't exist.
The only game with yuri content that I've played and was genuinely good as a game is Mary Skelter 2 (which I played in the first place because I liked the first game a lot; it was a pretty good dungeon crawler). I would say Labyrinth of Refrain but the yuri, while being both a spoiler and part of the backstory for the main character, is almost a non-factor.
Outside them yuri games are either visual novels (AKA not real games) or Senran Kagura / Neptunia-esque shovelware.
I have seen arguments that Senran and Nepnep isn't really "yuri" but more of Atelier tier yuri fanservice
