A "series" is linear. It isn't two lines that diverge from a branching point. "Final Fantasy Gaiden" or whatever is one series, Final Fantasy is another. That's the most natural way to look at it, I claim. You could of course just sort all games with "Final Fantasy" anywhere in their titles by release date and call them one series if you really wanted. That's super awkward, but you could do it. Maybe also lump in stuff like Mystic Quest, Dissidia, FF Legend, all of it. There's some ambiguity here.
Personally, I'd go as far as saying that games like FF X-2 and the FF13 sequels are part of the main Final Fantasy family (again, I wouldn't call it a series, because it repeatedly splits into branches), and no further than that. I wouldn't include all the other stuff. But I wouldn't call the annoying fat guy in the weird shirt a moron for disagreeing, either. He's got a point.

Also it's worth mentioning they remade this game under the name Sword of Mana on GBA and retroactively added allusions to other Mana games, guess what they took out? The chocobo and everything that even hinted at being related to Final Fantasy, that is to say barely anything at all which is why they stopped pretending right after the first game that it had anything to do with Final Fantasy, Ishii wanted to make something completely different and was forced to attach FF to the first game. As soon as he had the opportunity to rid that needless stain on the series he did just that and now Mana/Seiken Densetsu which these days has more in common with SaGa than anything has always been considered its own series apart from FF.
