I hate Cutscenes

Is there anybody who does not hate cutscenes?
I play games because I have the urge to give my hands some action.
Instead of just letting me do this, the vast majority of video games force me to listen to some bullshit I do not care about.
The story of games could be told without taking away controller from the player.

Oh wow you guys are soooo smart!
Have you ever considered that there are games which good gameplay I want to experience and therefore stomach the shitty cutscenes I have to endure in order to get to the gameplay?
With that logic, you could excuse every cancer in every game.

Cutscenes are fine, what isn't fine are those walking/following sections where you're not doing anything other than slowly moving through a path while the characters dump exposition or whatever. It's cheap, it's lazy, and it winds up being less engaging than the actual cutscenes.

Cutscenes jolt the player out of the game world like a migraine attack takes its victim out of their lives. Take for example Horizon: Forbidden West, the game has a well-crafted world that allows for a journey of exploration. But no, the player has to follow a tedious, mediocre story acted by forgettable characters to progress the game. What if it was designed like Elden Ring? What if the player was thrown into this predatory land and they had to discover ways to survive those incredibly-designed machines? Worlds like Horizon’s and Red Dead Redemption’s are perfect for an open-ended survival experience, but, sadly, their developers have mastered the art of frustrating the player with scripted gameplay and game-stopping scenes.

I don't think you watch movies or read books because you'd know there's a world of difference between a fast paced 90 minute action flick and a slowly pace 4 hour epic. There's a difference between a light Conan the Barbarian novella and a thick Thomas Pynchon book.

Video games are the same way. You only play what you're in the mood for and what you're prepared to tolerate. Going in with a crabby attitude is just setting yourself up to fail, and it isn't the game's fault.

All cutscenes should be able to be paused, fast forwarded, rewinded, skipped, and viewable at any point in time via a main menu option after progressing in the story. If PS2 games could do this then there's no fricking excuse 20 years later on exponentially more powerful hardware. Anybody defending this believes that games should have less features than they did 20 years ago and should immediately slam their head on a knife

      Anonymous

No. Complete opposite here. I unironically love cutscenes, the longer the better. They set the mood, act as rewards for progress, and are hopefully entertaining in their own right. I consider "movie game" a compliment, not an insult.
I usually have no idea which games have skippable cutscenes because I'd never think to try skipping them on a first run, and I rarely replay most games.

Rewinding and fast forwarding is hard to do for realtime cutscenes, particularly if they rely on physics engines and such.

It is dumb and bad business practice. Developers know there exist people that dont like wasting time with cutscenes and just want to play the game. Witcher 3 is a good example. I don't mind cutscenes themselves.

I do mind unskippable 5 minute cutscenes that you are forced to rewatch if you fail a puzzle, lose to a boss, fall off during platforming, whatever. Just go to hell, for fricks sake.
On top of that when the game is good but the story and writing is some moronic marvel quip california moronation with bad voice direction and incompetent animation. Or when the cutscene is 10 minutes long because the developers wanted to make an interactive movie but had to settle for making a video game instead where actual gameplay unfortunately dilutes their masterpiece.

The only thing worse than bad unskippable cutscenes are unnecessarily nested menus and animated menu transitions etc. that makes it take 10 seconds to change your equipment or use your healing items.
