I have a old boomer friend, mid 40s, and he has other boomer friends that all share the same mindset as him which is, he hates when games are balanced in a healthy way.
For example fighting games, he prefers to play in super low elo, like bronze and below, and hates when devs make balance changes to games, even if characters are absolutely low tier, he thinks its catering to esports.
His favorite mp game is hell let loose, he literally sits in a bush and holds an angle for the entire match, and thinks any fps with objectives, were you have to move like siege, or valorant is an adhd zoommy fest.
His idea of competitive in games is pointlessly mashing and not learning the game.

I like to frick around and try new things not rigorously research other people’s guides on what the meta is and practice that one way of playing constantly. The competitive people don’t like us either so I don’t see the problem in us coexisting in our segregated tiers
This, and the problem is when devs develop games for esports types they usually take no risks when it comes to gameplay mechanics because innovation and quirkiness usually ruin the balance.
This is only true for games that dont allow for skill plays like MMOs, and soulsborne PvP.

I've been high elo in comp 1v1 games before, and I never found them sweaty, or stressful, mostly fun and engaging, as well as challenging.

There's a reason why former wow pros prefer clunky, item based classic wow pvp over modern retail 50% wr balance.
FOTM pvp is just more fun, as long as your class/hero/build will have its moment to shine. The 50/50 balance and rigged matchmaking make games stressful and sweaty, not the actual gameplay.
