So I should just treat it like Overwatch?

They are numbered for a reason.

There are like more than 15 of them excluding remasters.
Better to try the best out first and dig deeper no?

All FF are contained stories, you really don't need to play one to play the next. If you want to play 3 and then 9 it would make no difference.
You could play FF1 and then Stranger of paradise.

How much oldness can you tolerate?

Honestly, it depends on the controls.
At one point, I was playing Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War which came out in 96 but I had a blast.
So anything SNES and upper will do.

Do they share the universe like the Elder Scrolls or are they completely separate?

        >Do they share the universe like the Elder Scrolls
yeah, for the most part they're chronological, but a few games take place in the past.
except for 9, that one takes place in the spy kids universe 1000 years in the future.

If you can handle old Fire Emblem, you might as well start with FF1 and work your way up. It's fun seeing how the series evolved over the years.
        >Do they share the universe like the Elder Scrolls or are they completely separate?
        They're completely separate standalone experiences.

      7 Remake*
original 7 is so dated. if you want to play a game that looks like that, then play a lego game or something.

he could start with 7 remake but not the full story experience.

if he can wait sure why not.

Kinda split on starting from 1 or 7 remake but im more inclined towards 1.
          Thanks for the replies everyone

I would not start with either of those but that's jut me. 1 is just too old, you probably won't bother finishing it and won't play better games in the series as a result. MOST FF fans have not even beaten 1.
7 is a good start but Remake adds a story element that literally makes things from 7 different on purpose before it gets "corrected", basically it's an alternate timeline from the original. It's a good game but unless you only care about the fun combat, I don't suggest starting with it. It's borderline FFVII-2

              >It's borderline FFVII-2
that's why he should skip the original and go right to the remake. just like with x and x-2, x is a waste of time.

7R is a little too weird to play without playing 7. Which is sad since it's supposed to be a remake, but it really seems to be written for someone that played 7 already.

Honestly just play whatever one looks interesting. None of them are related. There are a few staples between them like Chocobos, Moogles, Cactaurs, and the summons, but their place in the lore is just isolated to the game. Like for example in FF7, anyone can summon if they just equip the magic, but in FF10, only very specific people can summon.
Another comparison of the same two games, in FF7 when you die, your body and spirit automatically returns to the planet and becomes a source of life for the planet or used as a fossil fuel by humans, but in FF10 your body stays in place and you become a monster unless someone comes and performs a ritual to send your spirit to the afterlife.

I liked FFX. I've never tried X-2 so I might some day buy the FF X/X-2 remaster on Steam.

IV, V, VI, VII(not Remake, Remake is a sequel), IX, and X are the absolute best ones.

I, III, VIII, and XII are all flawed but enjoyable.

II, XIII, and XV are all varying degrees of bad.

    XI and XIV are MMOs.

    FF 1-6 via emulation
FFVII is okay via PC, but use Reunion and 7th Heaven's catalog mods (not the gameplay ones because most frick things up, use the graphics and sound stuff).
FFVIII is fine but I don't really like it.
    FFIX with Moguri mod.
FFX+X-2, if you really want to.
FFXII is supposed to be really good but I didn't enjoy FF Tactics so I won't like it.
Everything else mainline does not exist.

Imbeciles that start a thread with "What am I in for" should be instabanned.

You know what's the biggest problem with the modern consumer? Literally starved for dopamine that you need to be told how to enjoy a product.
What's the point of this thread?
    Go play the game.
    See for yourself.
Why sit in a thread where you will be spoiled, your expectations will be skewed and you will never have a single shred of an authentic experience.
    Think for yourself.
Literally develop a brain and have the experience on your own.
Stop waiting for others to tell you what to think, feel and do.
    Stop living life through proxy.
We were never meant to learn so much of our life through proxy.
We were never meant to be this detached from ourselves that we need other people to fill in the gaps for us.
Stop making these moronic threads and asking these braindead questions like "What am I in for?"
What you are in for is a life devoid of any authenticity. A boring dull and completely souless existence where your mind is nothing but a drone to other people's whims. A literal slave, mind and body forever stuck in validation and scarcity FOMO hell.
This generation is completely fricked. Stop.
    Live.

6, 7 and 10 are all good entry points, and also considered by most to be the best ones in the series
I would personally recommend 6 because pic related

    1 for dnd the game
3 or 5 for the job system
4 or 6 for the story
    7 because 7
    10 for the best combat
12 for fantasy star wars, the combat is very polarizing so you have to try it to see if you like it
    Tactics for strategy kino
Everything else is optional but I'm not your mom, go play 8 if you want to see junctioning for yourself
If you enjoy cringekino you can also try kingdom hearts, great combat with final fantasy-lite story
