Tie between Red Alert and Warcraft 2, depending on what setting and style of gameplay you prefer
True words
>Warcraft 2
Does it get better? First few missions are kinda boring
>campaign
It always has been a multiplayer centric game.
Git good at Mini chop farms proper or the original Garden of War!
If I had to play one repeatedly, for sheer comfiness, I'd choose C&C. WC2 soundtrack is great, but C&C is one step better. There is also more mission variety, and the factions have different units. If you need to sink a lot of time though, WC2 might have had a skirmish mode, which would help a lot.
Unfortunately, the missions in WC2 predominantly do lewd things to donkey scrotums. Mostly because the difficulty isn't high at all, and the naval sections are just huge timesinks. There is a big jump in difficulty with the expansion though, so you could just use cheats to get the plot of the base game and then beeline to those missions. As with virtually all real-time games, the difficulty is adjusted primarily via the in-game speed slider, so ramp up the speed if necessary.
Does any oldschool RTS do naval battles right? They just seem to always suck
Define "right". I've only ever played two RTS games that have good naval combat: Empire Total War and Napoleon Total War. Neither are retro.
Act 1 is pretty basic. Act 2 and forward are all about wiping out the opponent base, but still not really challenging until the final human mission. Expansion is where the real fun begins
Should I just start with expansion then?
Not that anon, but if you're well versed in RTSs already and you don't care to go though the story (just here for the gameplay) then yeah, I'd say start with the expansion.
play original first, both campaigns have great missions near the end. Don't use save games
uhhh, the fun in wc2 is ignoring the enemy until you have cut down every tree, mined out every mine, and consumed all the oil on the map then built the largest army of the most powerful units you have access to possible and stomping the enemy
also don't forget to reload every time you lose a unit so you can have a perfect clear
Red Alert is worth popping back in just for that redbook soundtrack
Pure comfiness (or carnage if AI patch is applied).
>AI patch
Tell me more about this
It's an official patch that makes CPU keepers smarter and supposedly improves creatures AI.
It's README contents and download can be found i.e. here: https://keeperklan.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=1
Neat, only played the game unpatched I guess.
Have to check that out
How do you guys set the mouse sensitivity in dosbox to play Warcraft (2) properly? For me, a single tap of the mouse sends the camera to the other side of the map. Turning down cycles kind of affects this, but it affects the actual gamespeed way more and in a negative way. Playing with keyboard camera is not fun.
Turn down cycles just enough for game to still run smoothly but scrolling works naturally. Also I've had more luck with this with dosbox staging and dosbox-x
The dungeon maps were the standout in this game. Really good idea to bring them out and expand them with secrets and loot in Warcraft 3.
Settlers 2
looks like Civ4, don't it?
Well, technically it's not RTS but it's damn comfy.
Holy fricking based. I never see anyone posting this on here. Pikers destroy everything in this game. I thoroughly enjoyed taxing the plebs at the maximum rate. What a great game this was, bought it in the bargain bin for $5 at Wally.
Welcome to RGB Classic Games. This is a very simple web site about a very simple time.

Seemed like a cool game but I remember there being some frickery where the more times you saved your game the longer it took to load your game save until it became intolerable. And I don't just mean on the same map, but the entire game.
Not a DOS game and it still gets fan patches to run on modern PCs in high resolution.
didn't ask don't care
But this is a thread specifically about MS-DOS, stupid!
Red Alert 1 but I play the Win95 version.
Blood & Magic
I was really into this game for a while in the late 90s because it was something my shit laptop could run. I never beat it though because the last part of the game gets crazy hard and also probably the laptop mouse nub wasn't cutting it for micro.
>EXPRNC instead of XP
>ATTK instead of ATK
>DFNS instead of DEF
It's like the gaming equivalent of some literature written in Middle English; recognizable but foreign
The OG.
fk wrong pic.
Weird that the unit on the box pic is a Soldier, i.e. the basic b***h thing you NEVER use once you have an alternative and one of the three factions can't even build. A quad would have been a much more iconic choice, IMO.
