FF1~10 all have a pretty consistent message about death and loss, just spun in a different flavor each time to varying levels of effectiveness.

FFI is more about very basic vanquishing the darkness, the real innovations it had was having the whole rescue the princess mission being just the prologue and having a crazy-ass time travel twist thrown at the very end.
I'll give you that the other ones have the themes of the meaning of life, coping with the loss of someone you care and similar.

the 1000 year time loop is an allusion to being trapped in reincarnation. There's a reason why it's brought up again and again in the series. 1000 years has a symbolic meaning.

Japanese teenager writing just comes off as goofy at times. FF7 borrows heavily from Evangelion (goo lifeforce sea, hero goes comatose, two waifus compete for his attention, Sephiroth, etc). So it's literally anime writing and they were just taking what was popular in anime and then making a game out of it.

      Anonymous

Also, wait... Isn't Evangelion a satire of mecha anime? Aren't like, the vast majority of popular anime satirical in some way, at least the ones Westerners like?

        >satire

Not really. It combines elements from Ultraman, Ideon, and Devilman into one soup. A lot of reviewers in America aren't aware of any of these, and just compared it to Gundam and Macross since that's all they knew, but Evangelion is barely a mecha series. It subverts expectations and veers off from a monster of the week series into Revelations schizophrenia, so people assumed it was a "deconstruction" of mecha.

It does have some elements of mecha commentary - Asuka is the "hot blooded" young pilot (see where that goes) and Shinji is the young pilot with indecision about whether he should pilot at all or quit (like Amuro in the original Gundam). Both take the opposite ending from the standard mecha series.

        >Aren't like, the vast majority of popular anime satirical in some way, at least the ones Westerners like?

Comedy shit, sure. Eva is played mostly straight.

Ever think its weird that Sephiroth comes from israeli Gnostic thought? It's so random right? It's because it's another element lifted from Evangelion, where it's much more natural fit. They likely stole the "timeline" shit fro mthe remakes from the Evangelion Rebuilds.

kaballah (sephiroth) specifically comes from the talmud, which has it's origins in the 2nd and 3rd Enoch books (which were written by a completely different author from the 1st Enoch btw). They say it comes from the evil Enoch, from the line of Cain, instead of the good Enoch, who was a descendant of Seth.

Because the name was recycled from Final Fantasy 6, where the Fiend of the Warring Triad was named Sephiroth (Sefilos/Sefiros/Sefiroth) but this detail was never actually depicted in-game until 14.

In Nomura's sketches, he named the goddess of the Triad, Sophia. The goddess is also depicted as the one blessing Kefka in the 3rd tier of the final fight. I just learned that recently actually. I didn't know Nomura knew that much that early on.

Here's a section of my notes about Strangers Of Paradise about this topic
                >The Lufenians seek a balance between the light and dark, between good and evil. To this end they orchestrate the repetitive act of the Strangers on their quest to save the Crystals. The balance between good and evil comes from the secret societies, where the powers of light and dark are; good and evil are in constant struggle. But it's important to note that in this frame of thinking, the God of the Bible is evil, and Lucifer is the light. To the Lufenians, the cleansing of the Crystals of their darkness is their plan, but this is what destroys Cornelia, as what is right and what is wrong is inverted. The world is stuck in a state of reincarnation, where the will of the evil Lufenians are imposed on Cornelia, over and over again, never ending; to keep a balance between the light and dark. By Jack absorbing the darkness and becoming Chaos he rights the nature of reality, where good triumphs over evil; where the true light overcomes the true darkness, and bliss everlasting is the result.
                >In that sense Cornelia represents the Kingdom of Light, whereas Lufenia is the Kingdom of Darkness. In Lufenia's point of view, they are a balance between the light and dark, but this is maintained only through the destruction of Cornelia, which in a way is reflection of their hatred; this is a direct comparison of the beliefs of freemasons and all the secret societies of antiquity. Those who believe that evil is good, and good is evil, and also preach an idea of balance between the two; the black and white checkerboard. In that way, Lufenia is purely evil, even though it preaches balance, because at their core, they believe that evil is good, and good is evil, so everything they deem good, is actually evil, so the concept of a balance between light and dark is also evil.

How can he demand that his own text be interpreted correctly? How can he accuse anyone else of having misunderstood, simplified, deformed it, etc.? In other words, how can he discuss, and discuss the reading of what he writes?
            >The answer is simple enough: this definition of the deconstructionist is FALSE (that's right: false, not true) and feeble; it supposes a bad (that's right: bad, not good) and feeble reading of numerous texts, first of all mine, which therefore must be read or reread.
            >Then perhaps it will be understood that the value of truth (and all those values associated with it) is never contested or destroyed in my writings, but only reinscribed in more powerful, larger, more stratified contexts.

Derrida is just an extreme, autistic working out of the implications of Nietzsche's philosophy. Note the value he gives to strength of reading (as opposed to feebleness) - this is just will to power autistically maximized in the specific domain of interpreting texts and the history of commentary on those texts, etc. It's not "satanic" to question the functionality of the value "truth" in philosophical contexts...what's satanic is to idolize a notion of truth unexamined with reference to its own conceptual dependencies (such as presence and immediacy).

Good satire should provoke thought while poking fun at commonly-accepted ideas. Let's look at a couple examples across the series.
    >FF1, the tutorial is saving the princess--the point where most other games of the era ended
    >FF3, what if the game just kept going after you thought you already saw everything? Explore the floating island, explore the world below, explore under the ocean under the world below, defeat Xande, ???
    >FF5, the main villain is an amalgam of demons inside of a tree. Instead of building his home out of wood, he builds it by cutting down humans instead.
    >FF7, the main character is a pastiche of everything popular in the 90s. He dresses like a Dragon Ball character, has the Guts sword, has spiky anime hair, and acts like a brooding edgy 90s action hero. The game oscillates between hyping him up and completely emasculating him until he learns to be his own person.
    >FF9, I don't think there's any actual satire here. Being lighthearted, having banter =/= satire, all of its core themes are played genuinely.
    >FF12, the entire plot after the events aboard the Shiva could have been avoided if Ashe just accepted the treaty and agreed to be a vassal queen. Our alleged hero has a woman moment and only narrowly avoids making the Cold War go hot just because she wanted a satisfying revenge against the country that got her husbando killed. Not exactly satire and more shakespearian tragedy.
There's something to the idea, but to say the whole series is satirical is absurd.

I don't think FF9's narrative is a satire but I do find it funny how despite being marketed as a return to the series' roots it's mostly messing around with menus and minigames. Isn't the most common criticism how broken and exploitable the combat is? Can't really say the same thing about 1-6 IMO.

It's a return to the roots in that it's a high-fantasy setting where characters have clearly-defined jobs and fighting the Four Fiends and collecting THE CRYSTALS after their last true appearance in 5 to save the kingdom is a core part of the story. Crystals showed up kinda sorta as the Magicite/Materia in 6 and 7, but those instances are distinct enough for them to be considered their own standalone ideas.

      >>FF9, I don't think there's any actual satire here. Being lighthearted, having banter =/= satire, all of its core themes are played genuinely.
The parody object of this game is FF itself. "Returning to roots" in order to poke fun at them.
      Adding to your list
      >FFX, throughout FF games summons have appeared for a turn or two to dole out high damage then leave; here you get to control them in battle, and it turns out the protagonist was a controllable summon as well; he "leaves" at the end of the game.

There is nothing new. When you say "brooding edgy action hero", you're referring to an archetype. And it didn't start in the 90's, that's for sure.

Exdeath in V is the tree spirit. The Guardian Tree he's spawned from houses the Crystals. The Crystals in question were the siphons of evil, until they created Exdeath using the tree they were housed in, which is why he has power over the Crystals. When he enters the Void as wood, he comes out as flesh and blood. (Pinocchio's wish was to become a real boy; turning from wood, to flesh and boy)
      >The 4 Warriors of Light part ways for a year but when Krile returns the to the Guardian Tree, they all reunite, saying they'll always be with each other. It's rather vague, but based off of the minor detail that a year passed during the credit scenes, it brings to mind the 1000 years theme. They will always be together, the 4 warriors of Light, against the tree spirit that comes out of the Guardian Tree every 1000 years, which again is emphasized; in front of the Guardian Tree is where Bartz reasserted this promise to Krile.

    >I heard a schizo theory
Why did you keep it in your mind if you could notice as much?

    Here:

    Sephiroth has narcissistic personality disorder.

    He has a false self.
The false self is an internal omnipotent god version of himself
    all perfect.
That's savior sephiroth. That's what he thinks he is.

Since he has a mother complex, he finds a woman (Jenova)
that reminds him of his mother

(those people have a heavy oedipus complex and they never outgrow it)

makes her his girlfriend and treats her and expects her to be like his mom.
    Dual mothership model.

Narcissists are mentally impaired, they confuse their own internal world and the external world.

The whole story about the world ending and someone trying to destroy it,

    It's about you
About not succumbing to meaninglessness. Nihilism.
    About holding on to hope.

The whole angel and esoteric visuals are just that. Visuals.

That's why you find the actual body of Sephiroth inside a crater frozen. Narcissists are empty inside. They have amentia.

A lot of stories are about avoiding the void that people with NPD are. About not thinking like someone who has NPD, narcissistic personality disorder.

There's a big difference between narcissism and NPD.

That's just a pseudo-psychoanalytic interpretation, though. Reliant on pre-critical "inside/outside" models of subjectivity. Even if you were to criticize these ideas and arrive at a more nuanced Freudian concept, nothing would authorize that lens ahead of time besides tactical decision and rhetorical exigence.

        >"inside/outside" models of subjectivity

I wonder why the last fight happens inside Could's mind then.

And if you take into account the extra material that Sephiroth is still in the lifestream after FF7, then it was Cloud's mind.

          Anonymous

Sephiroth is Chaos, and the Lifestream is the goddess. The goddess creates Chaos, which is why Sephiroth persists with her. But that doesn't change the obvious fact that Cloud, who is the Warrior of Light, killed Sephiroth, who is Chaos, at the end of VII.

eh, that sounds too much like a diametric boolean interpretation to me. Much too reliant on post-observation "indulgences" in objectivity. Even if I were to criticize your ideas in an attempt to detach from a more concretized concept of Freudian thought, everything posited would have been justified post hoc and not through a careful examination of rhetoric strategic dynamism.

When the games in the series are not directly connected, and have been out for years.
Also it's kind of a normie series, like Sonic.

There's too much info about them.
      Countless:
      guides,
      reviews,
content (videos, articles, posts, fanfic, etc)

There's too much and no filter. So in a post you get shippers, fanfic, head canon, canon, opinion, fact, etc.

Just like in the series there's no cohesion and filter, people with no cohesion and filter are drawn to it.
