I just beat pic related recently and it's the first Star Ocean game I've ever played till completion. The other games in the series didn't really pull me and they felt like copies of Tales of from my perspective but after playing Second Story, I've realized it's the other way around and Tales of is the fake Star Ocean. I still think 2 is the best in the franchise and the rest are kinda mediocre though, this must be how Final Fantasy fans feel when crossing over to Dragon Quest.

How recently? Should've just played the remake instead honestly.
The remake is what I played. And by recently, I'm talking like 2 days ago. Star Ocean has an audience and it's not me.

I've felt this way since the 90s and am eternally malding Tales is the one that "lived" while I haven't really loved a SO game past 3. Maybe try some other tri-Ace games (Valkyrie Profile, Radiata Stories) if you are looking for a similar vibe.

I bounced off of DQ so hard as a child and an adult. All of the elements I enjoy are there but it just never clicked.
I like the idea of Star Ocean and think 3 should be a masterpiece, but actually playing ANY Star Ocean game just feels terrible to me. You're silly to say Star Ocean is fake Tales - if it is, then where is Star Ocean's Tales of Symphonia? Until that happens, it's just too difficult to care.

Yea. Tales Of might be the fake Star Ocean but it's also better on average as a series imo. You really can't go wrong with any of them if you start with Symphonia/Abyss and move forward in releases from there.

It's really cute seeing newcomers to vidya make all these little associations.
The battle theme is certified kino (I still listen to it occassionally) but everything else about this game and the series by extension is so mid and forgettable.
So they ripped off Star Trek, how's original.

i used to play tons of JRPGs until star ocean 2, then i pretty much stopped because that game ended the genre. there wasn't much need to play anything else after that. i still play JRPGs occasionally but that game still sits at the top of the pile as far as i'm concerned

I know nothing about tales whatsoever but I like star ocean 2 a lot. I never liked the other SO games for being slow and for the characters being obnoxious. Should I look at getting into tales?

Lol. Lmao even. Way to ward a person off from the series. Symphonia is slow as molasses and Abyss (also pretty slow btw) has some of the most obnoxious characters in the history of videogames, mostly the MC.
