I had a feeling that it would be enjoyable, albeit make me feel like I should just play Terraria. I was half right, because the game turned out to be slower paced, and feel slice of life simulator at times.

when tutorials are obtuse like this, yeah they're a bit of a challenge to get through. it should be teaching me how to play but it's not. bad tutorial design.

In 20 minutes you should've done:
Finish 'academy' literal tutorial >Objective: Explore orbited planet
Beam down to the surface.
Find the signposted SURFACE mine
Defeat boss, collect the 20 core fragments as loot. >Objective: Find the archaic energy source
Literally follow the arrow. Use the loot. Talk to mandatory quest NPC Scan a bunch of bullshit Do the scientist quests for movement tech Do the tutorial moon quest Finally repair the ship and be freed to play the game.

why do I have to beat the big scary bear? I have 20 of those gems the game claimed I needed. it also told me I could avoid fighting and dig down instead, and I did find a way around and got the gems.

That's a harsh way of putting things, the game isn't very upfront with what I should be doing. I thought I accomplished the goal for instance.

You need to finish the tutorial before you can warp to another player, hence the quickstart checklist.

Why? Because it's a 20 second fight at most
you drive a hard bargain. it keeps summoning minions though, this is going to be a pain.
