I kinda understand the basics of DF now, but after 3 years building my fort no major event has happened. I've read if you want cool shit going you need to embark on dangerous locations but what is the line between still fun for a beginner and impossible tier?

while we're on the subject, is there a better way to deal with taking all the fricking rocks up to the fort? are minecarts a thing that's used for this kinda thing or just gotta get the haulers to haul
i believe wheelbarrows should help the haulers initially but after that minecarts are probably the next step
I still don't get the minecarts. If I want to haul boulders, 5 dwarfs with 5 wheelbarrows seem to do the exact same thing with less effort.
I recommended minecarts but I personally never bother with them.
I only ever used them for defensive purposes and infinite storage
Minecarts are amazing because they only use a few haulers to haul a lot of stuff really fast.
But anon never bothered with them because in DF you usually don't have a problem with dwarfpower. So often, unless you're running a huge mining operation that can't be refined and crafted on site, then you don't need minecarts. Just have 40 guys haul it, they have nothing better to do anyway.
It hauls a lot of stuff, except stone and ore, like what it's made to do. If it holds 83 bars/blocks it should hold 20 boulders at least, not just 5.

Their priorities are horrible. Civ sites are rectangles in dirt, no workshops, almost no furniture or decoration, can't trade or cook but the sprites for furgays are in.

Kind of. When youstart the tutorial, it automaticaly picks a safe location on the map that isnt in range of goblins or necro towers nor is a high savagery biome and of neutral inclination. And maybe even turns off some of the thresholds for megabeast and other nasty stuff to show up at your fort, but im not sure on this one.
You can keep playing on this fort past the tutorial but it going to be basicaly the DF equivalent of an easy mode.
And there then there is the world gen part of it, which I assume you just used the default preset options, which there is nothing wrong with, but if you want you can make the world a lot more dangerous by using the the advenced world gen

What's the best way to play dwarf fortress? I heard there is the ascii version, several modded versions and a new version.
sadly we're in a limbo state where there is no definitive version currently.
obviously modding the ascii version is free so that is a huge selling point for trying it out.
lazy newb pack does a lot for turning the base game into something a bit more digestible
The current verion of the game (50.12) is avaliable both for free in ASCII and with the premiun graphic pack + premium ost on Steam and Itch.io I think. Or you can just pirate it since it has no DRM or whatsoever.
For the pre-steam versions(47.xx) the options you had were:

>downloading the vanila ascii and manually instaling a fanmade tileset or graphic set of your choice
>downloading the Lazy Newb Pack which was basicaly the above but it came with a bunch of third party QoL that almost everyone used and made so that you instaling tilestets and other third party stuff was only a matter of clicking one or two buttons
I dont think that anyone has botherd to do tilesets and graphics packs for the 50.12 ASCII version yet. So if you want to play it and you cant stomach the the ASCII, they your only option is to either buy or pirate the game.
Tile sets are effectively dead. They went from 256 character to 5000.
The only exciting shit is forgotten beasts and invasions and depending on the embark you could have no hostile civs iirc. You can start in a harder biome, just don't do any of the evil embarks because they're basically impossible and not in a fun challenging way, they used to be better a decade ago (lol). I always pick untamed wilds

Your fort only has other dwarf settlements and human vilages around it with elven forest to the northeast
Maybe you could get some megabeast, or forgotten beast invasions, but again I wouldnt be surprised if the tutorial has turned those off too.

Honestly I think adding z-levels was a mistake. A lot of the fun came from the inevitable tantrum spiral as your increasing clusterfrick of a fortress filled up with nobles and other useless dwarves. The z-levels make it too easy to build an efficient layout and the resulting 3D pathfinding crawls it to a laggy halt long before everything can go to shit.
i agree, the game felt better when it was only 2d both performance-wise and fun-wise
It's the other way around, the z-levels made me switch from Rimworld to DF.
Z levels are cool and easily the games best selling point

It was fun for half an hour. Fort mode made me almost pass out of boredom. I was quite excited about adventure mode, but it was somehow even worse than anything I would have expected. I am so salty right now.
