I kinda want to start a YouTube channel critiquing video games, but I'm wary that this will only make me more consumeristic. I really don't want to get my identity just from consumption, but I feel like a hobby just talking about consumer products could do just this. What should I do?
pick a game
What do you mean pick a game?
i think step one is to pick a game
step 2 is record 10 mins of gameplay
step 3 is to talk over your recording
upload your first video as fast as possible while you have the creative urge
First off that's not high effort enough, and secondly it doesn't address the potential issue I brought up. I feel like I'll turn into MovieBob or something.
you are like someone who is afraid of going to the gym for getting too jacked
no matter what you do your first iteration is going to be suboptimal but if you are paralyzed by this self limiting mindset you are just going to consume anyway
the "problem" you've put forth is a defense mechanism against the actual thing you need for change which is production and consistency, which both exclude philosophizing about imaginary identity pitfalls
I’m about to do the same thing, anon. Im gonna make long form videos about games and other media that have had a profound effect on my life. I urge you to give it a go. You don’t even need a massive following to be able to do it full time. Just try it.
>You don’t even need a massive following to be able to do it full time
I never want to do it full time
That’s a very saturated market, anon. It’ll be hard to stand out from all the other vidya critics.
I don't think it really is tbh, I think there's a lack of videos talking specifically about a couple of games in the way I want to, and most (unsuccessful) channels don't even write scripts or have a plan for their videos. All niches are oversaturated.
Why do you want to make the channel?
I have some strong thoughts on games I've played and I wanted to make videos expressing those thoughts. I also really like analyzing and discussing games, but I feel like getting my identity from this is bad
bump
What is with zoomer’s or even just Ganker’s obsession with the word consuming? You aren’t eating video games, you play them because you like them, it’s so simple.
You're going to be creating content. It's not as easy as people think. There is the writing (finding original ideas, finding good points to bring up, shortening the script so that it's not boring,...), speaking in front of a mic (which is surprisingly harder than what people think), editing, creating the thumbnail and the title (basically marketing your product which requires some skill).
Yes you'll be consuming stuff but you're also going to be creating things from that. Therefore I'd say go ahead anon, it can't be a bad idea to turn non productive hobbies into productive ones.
just do it ffs
Whay should anyone care what you think?
That's a serious question. A reviewer of anything must speak with some authority that makes their judgments worthy of respect. In what way is your opinion better than the average Joe's? Unless you establish that from the start, no one will care what you think.
Stop wasting the time of people who have to many free time on there hands. STOP!
critics are the lowest grade of people. before you go telling people what or what not to consume, you should get good at something first.
