I've actually read a thing before about a Japanese translation of a game changing "PRESS START" or something to moonrunes and becoming a laughing stock due to the assumption that the Japanese don't understand the simplest of English words. Not sure what game it was or whether it was specifically "press start" but I just remember a game got made fun of for NOT using English text in Japanese.
He's American. This is an interview from right around when SM64 came out in the US.
>I noticed that Mario speaks with an Italian accent in this game. >Miyamoto: There’s no particularly detailed background or anything, but yeah, it’s a given that Mario is an Italian-American from Brooklyn, New York. That voice was actually done by a professional voice actor. He did Mario’s voice five or six years ago, at a video game event. By the way, Mario talks a lot more in the American version of Mario 64. He says “Okie Dokie!” and more. Peach also speaks. We had more time before the American release, so we improved the game.
Not to sound all Dobson-y but Mario probably only sounds Italian because Miyamoto didn't know American New Yorker English and an Italian speaking English would have had different accents and signed off on it. Just like your average anime viewer probably isn't going to pick up Tokyo vs Kansai vs Nagoya accents/dialect quirks watching subs. Remember, Martinet's casting call was specifically an Italian-American from Brooklyn. If they had rejected Martinet's wahoo pizza man audition the Mario franchise as a whole might've been a lot of different tonewise.
I genuinely think Chris Pratt's casting is basically a course correction 30 years after the fact.
I find it funny that people read "Eternal Star" on this shit as if it wasn't a generic texture that the artists took from somewhere and used without thinking, like practically all the textures in the game. Mario 64 basically uses programmer art, with placeholder textures.
In Ocarina of Time there are the same textures, I think, and since there's no star near the sign in that game, nobody's going to read "eternal star".
In fact, it looks like kanji shit.
That you are a homosexual? YES
Eternal Star
>they think the text is in english
>japanese game with english text? impossible

Without Nintendo of America Mario wouldn't have any kind of "lore".
