if you haven't just gotten used to obnoxious enemy placement then you have barely played the series or have a handicap. After demons and dark 1 I just expected there to be bullshit in the rest of the series. I'd walk into an area and think, man this is a really fricked up spot for an ambush. luckily, even in 2 you can still rollspam out of shit. you can't roll spam while fighting as well but you can at least leave danger and fight in a better position.

This is actually incorrect. Elden Ring is more like a parody of the Souls format. It borrows a lot from every Souls game but without really standing on it's feet. That is why it has so many swamps and other cliches. That is why it's hard to take it seriously if you have been a fan since DeS/DaS.

Because DS2 taught them an important lesson about expectations and marketing, but they took it too far in the other direction and are needlessly lenient towards DS3.
Because they were presumably using new management staff for the game (hence the B team meme), they ended up completely blowing out their scope, it's telling that after trying to make a game with entirely new mocapped animations, every game since then has mostly just used old animations and rigs from their previous games or spent multiple games developing them.
The game is shuffled together from unfinished and placeholder assets that were downgraded heavily, with unpolished and incomplete animations for experimental gameplay.
It's not completely terrible, I came off it thinking that it just kind of averaged out the quality of DaS1 even if that average is mostly dragged down by Izalith.
People shit on DaS3 all the time, it's in competition with DaS2 for being the worst souls game.
DaS2 gets shit for being a barely salvaged passion project, and DaS3 gets shit for being the lamest shuffled together stretch of cornercutting in the series.
Miyazaki also did not even want to make DaS3. Bamco forced him to do it. Miyazaki generally doesn’t do sequels unless he has to. The only ones he has worked on are AC4 and DaS3 IIRC and AC4 was early in his career.

It's both of those things. The game takes too much influence from BB combat despite not being BB. And the fact it's linear as frick. Like what is even the appeal of Dark Souls if the combat isn't it's own and it's exploration sucks?
Personally I found a lot of areas in DS 3 to be “THAT part” of the game. I hate the cathedral. I hate the swamp. I hate Irithyl city and dungeon. I hate Lothric castle. I just don’t find the areas and enemies in them fun or interesting. Especially Irithyl.
I also don't like how fast the games have gotten, but it really is mostly the linearity. I keep trying to replay it but every time I hit around the Cathedral I just lose all interest and stop playing.
But yeah, I've just come to accept that Fromsoft will never go back to making a game like Demon's Souls or King's Field. I still enjoy their games but I've had to get my methodical dungeon crawling fix elsewhere for many years now.
There are several things that annoy me.
I hate how they removed spell charges and went back to FP, how they limited items, I hate how I need to bring ashes to the ''base'' to be able to buy new items, I hate how you can't find spells in chesty and on bodes anymore, or maybe you can but I forgot (all these things affect my challenge runs and new playthroughs), rolling seems so fake bt that's probably because of graphics, the sound your weapon makes when hitting an enemy sounds like a water splash, I fricking hated enemy metamorphosis which seems to be pretty common in DS3, and I really hate the lightshow. Just swing 15 times at me, I don't need bright collors and enemy screaming at me.

Op here (real) I didn't play SotFS (because the original was cheaper) so that might be reason like some pointed out. Also I had no idea about the marketing thing could be a legit reason. But I really found the game beautiful. The environments and all that was way better than Dark Souls Remastered I feel like. The game was actually really pretty.

I hated this sort of half assed Nexus meets an attempt at DS1 world connectivity, do one or the other don't try and marry the two concepts together.
The area layouts ranged from inoffensive, to plain bad compared to DS1. Even DS3 had areas that looped around and connected to themselves in some way. There was some ok areas visually, but outweighed by the downright unpleasant areas.
I really hated the lack of an 8 way run, the deadzones that it has. The slower, more deliberate pace of combat wasn't fun either.
DS2 was the only souls game with a fair and balanced pvp, everything was viable and the pvp scene wasn't plagued by metagays because soul level filtered them. It's objectively a fun game but it's hated because pvpers scream the loudest.
The reason you see people shitting on DS2 is because of pvpers, the same people who run the same exact minmaxed build in DS3 with mismatched armor and that one miracle that prevents oneshots.

I haven’t played since launch and it was really bad at launch. Shrine of Amana was such fricking bullshit when the game came out. I won’t comment on if it got better after patches and the DLC but the original launch version of Dark Souls 2 was fricking garbage.

i agree that spell charges are superior, not for any nostalgic reasons but for gameplay reasons. ds1 (and ds2 until the very end if you refrain from using healing gems) has a limited supply of estus charges and a limited supply of spell slots, you can "sacrifice" spell slots to get more casts out of the spell you really like. its all fine and dandy for the spellcaster, and it also doesnt interfere with the gameplay of someone who doesnt care for magic. but when you divide the estus if healing and mana restoring, suddenly the character that has no/limited use for mana says "frick this" and allocates all his charges to estus, making ds3 and elden ring arguably easier and more survivable than ds2 with unlimited life gems (especially since drinking estus & healing both doesnt lock you in place and is very quick, almost instant, healing)

I just beat Dark Souls II again a few days ago and I get where the hate comes from, there are a solid list of positives (lifegems, power stancing, weapon and armor variety, great cast of NPCs, etc.) but the game is punctuated by so much miserable awful shit
>worst boss runbacks in the history of the Fromsoft library, you will genuinely never find a runback as disgustingly bad as Memory of the Old Iron King or Iron Passage or Dark Chasm of Old in any other game

I agree with all negatives you pointed out and I still think it's the best Dark Souls game. I'd even go further and say lifegems are an active net-negative to the game and you'll probably have more fun if you ignore their existence entirely.

dark souls 2 was known for being too easy when it came out beat the entire game without leveling adapability or life gems literally didn't even know about them.

What makes DS2 pvp better than other games? It felt clunky to me, poise was in a worse state than DS3 or ER. Fast weapons were king, and there was this very badly done bit where people slide backwards after getting hit. The only good I can remember is making ripostes a grab instead of an instant attack.

I had a lot of fun with DS2, it's probably the game I have the highest total playtime ever outside of MMOs (1000+ hours), mostly because I found the pvp and the metagame of it fun. That being said, it failed to really create an immersive, interconnected world like DS1 had, and its story really seemed disjointed and messy, likely due to having a troubled development and a lot of things changing midstream, and the game overall just being unfinished compared to the original intention.
I like it for what it is, but it does feel like a failure compared to the other fromsoft games.
