No, no, I was drawing a distinction between a plain-looking woman and the agender ogre from the recent Fable trailer.
The idea that she's supposedly "ugly by design" to represent the lower classes is, I think, ridiculous. I doubt the actress involved intended to be part of a joke at her expense, and at the expense of the poor, purely for comedic effect. If so, that would seem uncharacteristically out-of-touch with current social trends for a company of Microsoft's stature, and bear in mind that this is a product that they want people to buy. But then I'm not well-versed in British humor, so perhaps this is acceptable banter in Bongland, I don't know.
Now, if it turns out she's been afflicted with an uglification curse and that only by doing good deeds can she reverse its effects, then I would say that it's a stroke of brilliance. But I don't think that's what we're getting here. At any rate, I find this character design offensive to the eye and would be reluctant to buy the game unless there was a good story behind it.

But this has been standard casting practice since forever. The peasants in movies and TV shows are often made to look intentionally plain or ugly. I don't think they were seeking someone who is an "agender ogre" But rather, they sought someone who is a little interesting looking, which they can turn into a peasant girl.
As for current social trends. I dunno. I could say that they are allowed to get away with this, because they're "punching up". A poor small low class bipoc woman defeats the big evil posh man and wins.

She's got that wonky smile. But I would argue that her features are no less exaggerated than the concept art I posted earlier. Here, I'll numbered all of them for reference. The trailer girl is about on par with numbers 5 and 6. The only characters who are deformed ugly the way you describe are 15 and 17. Number 23 has some unusually large ears, but is otherwise a normal looking kid. 1, 2, and 4 are just haggard looking people, but not deformed in anyway. The rest range between regular ugly, average, and attractive. The image really has the whole spectrum. So your initial assertion about characters needing to be deformed in some way, is false.

Again, Fable's story is that multiple heroes exist in the world. And they all come from various backgrounds. They all get powers. They all do that stuff. There's no reason to assume that they were displaying the main character in the game.

Typically the default sets the baseline of what a character can look like. If the default is ugly than all amalgamations will probably be just as ugly. It also reminds me of a good old saying "You only get one first impression". If they are trying to market a game with ugly characters then that's really a bad sign. You always want to put your best foot forward and if this is their best in terms of aesthetics its complete shit.
My only problem with it is that they tried making it androgynous/racially ambiguous on purpose for that one size fits all marketing, that shit is always dumb and never works.

Fable never had a character creator and Fable 3 introduced gender selection. The unique thing about Fable was that your progress was shown by how much your character physically changes over time. Making the MC ugly as sin shouldn't be the default look, it should be when you are chaotic evil.

If so, that would seem uncharacteristically out-of-touch with current social trends for a company of Microsoft's stature, and bear in mind that this is a product that they want people to buy. But this has been standard casting practice since forever. The peasants in movies and TV shows are often made to look intentionally plain or ugly. She's got that wonky smile. But I would argue that her features are no less exaggerated than the concept art I posted earlier. Here, I'll numbered all of them for reference. The trailer girl is about on par with numbers 5 and 6. The only characters who are deformed ugly the way you describe are 15 and 17. Number 23 has some unusually large ears, but is otherwise a normal looking kid. 1, 2, and 4 are just haggard looking people, but not deformed in anyway. The rest range between regular ugly, average, and attractive. The image really has the whole spectrum. So your initial assertion about characters needing to be deformed in some way, is false.

Fable never had a character creator and Fable 3 introduced gender selection. The unique thing about Fable was that your progress was shown by how much your character physically changes over time. Making the MC ugly as sin shouldn't be the default look, it should be when you are chaotic evil.
