i like how in Banjo-Tooie and Pokemon Crystal there's a lot of carryover from the previous entry in their series. you retain all your moves and start in spiral mountain, and you catch kanto pokemon and surf from new bark town back toward pallet town. in my mind these are proper sequels, what do you think?

They added an updated version of the first gen games onto the second gen games as a bonus, something which they, again, never even set out to do or needed to, they decided on that late in development when it became clear they could do that.
It'd be like if Super Mario Bros. 2 or Sonic The Hedgehog 2 included the levels from their first game, but revised and as a bonus at the end, it's not 100% fresh content, but it's still additional content and effort, and it's cool that it's even there, particularly given how tight cartridge space is.

Yes, but I feel like duplicating all your assets for every cell in the game, thus bloating the frick out of the game's size, is a new kind of ineptitude which they would never have done 25 years ago.

Crystal had so much more soul than the later Indigo League games. No Johto in FRLG, no Sevii in HGSS, and no either one of those in Let's Go.

One stone. At the end of the game. GREAT!
The way RBY did it was better, letting you buy them early on presented an interesting decision for players. Do you instantly evolve the Pokemon, like the Growlithe/Vulpix you find outside Celadon, and evolve it now for a stronger Pokemon but need movesets, or do you grind for a better moveset?

Anon I've played GSC multiple times, I specifically play Crystal more because its slightly more convenient to get stones if I'm planning to use a stone using Pokemon. Its still inconvenient waiting for a call for stones
The entire replenishing system in GS for the stones is based on mystery gift, of all things.

Yeah I played it, and I never got a chance to evolve my Growlithe till it was pointless to do so. And also IIRC there is no way to teach Mareep line thunder, making it useless. Shit game. It's been quite some time since I played it, but I noticed things about it that sucked and made it inferior to the original ones.

Just a game based on the anime world would be dope. It's just a shame Gamefreak is so incompetent at 3D game design. Imagine the team that made Dragon Quest XI working on an open world Pokemon game.

You were just conditioned to want that because of the anime, the actual Orange Islands are crap. Their gyms are would be just like the bullshit tournaments from Gen 3/4, and there's not much of interest on them besides the crystal Onix and pink Pokemon island, both of which were never gonna happen. The sevii islands were fine and the Rocket plot was interesting and a good lead in the GSC

What a weird comparison. I see what you mean though. Gen 2 did feel like a proper sequel to gen 1 in a lot of ways. Certainly as a kid it felt like the most impressive jump between the two games in terms of content.

is it really that weird? i'd list more games but i am hard pressed to think of any quote on quote 'proper sequels' in the context i presented, i love how those two games built off the originals and didn't throw out anything at all, that's how i would want to make games
      -make a good game
      -update it patch ect
      -make a sequel game
-it contains the original game remastered which can be played into the sequel

It's a fun way to design a sequel. It means you can have more complex design right off the bat, rather than slowly reintroducing everything.

Just chiming in to say I've been thinking this for twenty years, banjo tooie and crystal are two rare sequels that top their already hall of Fame originals. Excellent taste op. Elite soundtracks too
