People don't just fly all over and/or explode in a shower of gore when shot, like they do in action movies. The entire point of bullets is that they are small and fast, so they penetrate armor/flesh/bone. What kills you is your body going into shock or bleeding out. There are reported cases of people being shot in the head and not even knowing something's wrong, until they get a massive headache and go to a hospital to figure out what the frick is going on.

Why was RE7 so much better than 8 despite being so similar?

      Anonymous

It wasn't. RE7 had one good area and more than half the game was trash with a cartoonishly bad bestiary and bosses. RE8 was great across the board with a great bestiary and bosses. If the gun progression wasn't totally fricked, it would be 4 tier.

        >A RE game is better than this because it was more action packed with better guns and stuff to shoot
        RE4 was a mistake

I have not played much of it yet, but the art style and visuals and the area just blow 7 out the water hard. I actually love 7, it's super good, but the entire atmosphere of 8 is exactly tuned to my perfect preferences. And then there's also the fact that 8 has Dimitrescu, which is like they specifically created the exact type of woman I am most attracted to but barely exists in real life in current year, and also made her a vampire, which are one of my most liked fantasy creatures. I've heard the game never reaches the quality of the castle later on, although it has good sections, but the sheer beauty of the interiors and the coolness factor carries that game for me. I hope it doesn't drop off in quality that bad toward the end, because barring 4 and 1, the setting is so strong that it could be in my top RE games.

the castle, Dimitescu and the other vampire girls are completely done with after the first 1/4 of the game and then you're just left with what feels like fillter content until the ending

Well that really sucks. I heard that the doll section is really nice, but I have not seen it. No idea about Heisenberg. I actually assumed the game would be set IN the castle and surrounding area for the most part, at least for the villains, like they would have their own sections of it. That sounds like they focused their resources on what the draw was and then just cobbled the rest together, that makes me sad.. I still really like what little I have seen, but it is a damn shame to hear that.

yeah, consider the castle Dimitrescu's lair and then the other bosses have their own locations which are elsewhere

It's a more consistent experience for me. Some may dislike avoiding the bakers for chunks at a time and the mold guys being the primary fodder you blow away but it formed a complete experience from start to finish. Re8 tries so many things and while I like the look of the game and how crazy it gets the gameplay doesn't hold up and almost feels like a mish mash of different games trying to work together. Donna and Moreau might as well be filler content between the castle and factory with how little the player needs to actually play the game instead of just get from cutscene to cutscene. Both games have a lot of scripted stuff in them but 7 just has this quality to it that felt way more thought out and refined with it's pacing and escalating scenarios. There's a freshness to it even with the faceless mold men that 8 doesn't somehow hit for me. I also thought the lack of upgrading guns in 7 worked better, it was less gamey and more like here is a tool you will get to know, learn and love while 8's weapons became disposable the second you get the newer one. 8 seemed to want to have re4's arsenal but whoever balanced all it out didn't really know what they were doing and the game doesn't give you enough time to really kit Ethan out like Leon gets in 4.

      >Why was RE7 so much better than 8 despite being so similar?

Because RE8 rehashes RE7 elements without understanding why they were there in the first place.

First person and small FOV was meant to add to the feeling of claustrophobia and being trapped, in RE8 first person serves no purpose.
Ethan not having a face and little personality was because he's supposed to be a self-insert, 8 retcons this and makes him a snowflake.
No Iron Sights, slow aiming and lackluster melee/dodge options was because Ethan is not a trained fighter, in 8 he is but it still plays like shit

It's very clear that the person who directed RE8 did not understand RE7 at all, it's similar to how lots of Souls clones just copies FromSoft without understanding why the game design is the way it is. So it feels phony.

What do you mean, in third person nothing about the weapons or melee feels clunky to me. It feels reminiscent of the RE4 remake or something, for example. Shotgun has a nice blast, handguns are weaker, but they were shit in RE7 too. How is aiming "slow" in 8?

          >What do you mean, in third person nothing about the weapons or melee feels clunky to me. It feels reminiscent of the RE4 remake or something, for example.

Games should be designed around their camera perspective. RE7 is first person because a lot of the game takes place in tight corridors and has you crawling under floorboards and squeezing through tight areas. RE4 has much bigger environments and bigger crowds of enemies that you fight because the non-fixed over the shoulder camera suits this better. RE8 wishy washy approach where they do both is bad.

          >How is aiming "slow" in 8?
RE7 was the first game to introduce the shrinking crosshair that modern RE uses, it makes sense in the slower survival horror RE's but it's bad and annoying in the action ones.

I get what you mean now, but I honestly don't feel it's all that clunky. I actually have only played it in third person for now, I only played mercenaries with Chris in first person, but Chris is so OP in mercenaries that I never felt I was being slow or anything.
Sure, Ethan is trained, but he's not "I FRICKING HATE BOULDERS" Chris, so it's not like he has the upper body pure moron strength to eliminate recoil. It makes sense that he can't control the weapon that well, and none of what I've seen from RE8 seems as action-packed as something like RE5, for example, so the movign crosshair does not seem much of an issue to me. Maybe it becomes more of a problem much later on.

              >I get what you mean now, but I honestly don't feel it's all that clunky.

It's not just about if something is clunky or not (though that plays a part) but just playing to the strength of the camera perspective in general.

The hidden items in the environment in RE7 is a great example of this. You'll find ammo and resources in hard to see places like under a bed you need to crouch to see, or between two bookshelves tucked away. Stuff is so well hidden that there's even a temporary boost that helps you see items. This is something that only really works well in first person because what's in front of you is right there in your face. It's just not something that works well in third person when your character is taking up space on the screen. Which is why this stuff was removed from Village

RE7 had a clear vision and direction that it nailed hard besides maybe the boat section the game has a gritty grindhouse dark sweaty feel that is present the entire game.

8 just feels like random ideas thrown at a dartboard and trying desperately to emulate RE4 while still having the gameplay and camera style of 7 that only work in 7 since 7 was a horror game and not an action game like 8

This, RE8 tried to hard to appeal to both people who liked RE7 and people who didn't, it feels like a compromised game without any real conviction.

What's worse, moreau's stinky pond and heisenburg's factory or Re7 frigate and mines?

Moreau got me a bit because I have a moronic fear of sea monsters. Heisenbergs I thought was awesome, RE7 mines, meh.

I like the ship in 7, but the mines as Ethan were ass, though getting to come back as Chris with an automatic shotgun was a nice change of pace
that's definitely another strength 7 has over 8: the Rose DLC was absolutely terrible, but the Chris and hillbilly boxer DLCs for 7 were great. Even some of the mini-DLCs like Ethan Must Die were enjoyable

I loved both RE7 and RE8 and I fricking hated the Rose DLC just felt so cheaply made and lazy like a Mod instead of a real piece of RE content it even has the same final fricking boss as 8 as well it's so lame.
