Western games don't have the same theological depth as something like Xenogears.
Your CRPG classics have their story rooted in psychology, but it doesn't really go further than that.

What other game, hell even other medium, does concepts like "I am the wave existence"? Not many. Only Tsukihime, Evangelion and Fate/Stay Night.

Disc 2 leaves a bad impression but not really for the reasons I see people claim. The Chair doesn't occur nearly as often as others imply and when it does show up it never stays for that long, instead usually being a transition into sort of a diorama where the background image sets the scene and some characters act out like in a play in front of it, there are plenty of actual in-game cutscenes just like usual, and even though there's a lot of instances of cutscenes followed by a boss fight with no level to go through between those it's not like the gameplay was ever the game's strongest aspect. The real letdown is the disconnect between events and lack of proper build up. The Super Dimensional Yggdrasil IV feels completely unearned because out of nowhere Solaris has this giant superweapon attacking the two main countries, we are told (in about as much detail as I'm about to say it) that Bart finds out one of his ancestors owned a transforming battleship that just happens to be Nortune's center building and then you use that to defeat the superweapon. That was easily the lowest point of the game and would have been entirely removable if it didn't come back for one brief scene at the end when storming the final area. Lots of XG's dialogue is expositional but in disc 2 that's about the only kind of dialogue you ever get, especially since there's apparently so much more to the world map than is visible on it. Also the game needs like 10 more songs to pad out the soundtrack, I like the music in general but some songs kind of overstay their welcome even if they're thematically appropriate for the scenes they play in.
Overall if you could put up with XG's faults in disc 1, it's only the first hour or so of 2 that's so offputting, after a while it's all the biggest moments of the game one after the other even if some moments could have used more time between them to flesh them out. I have to respect it too because nowadays XG would be multiple games on purpose with filler.

Nortune's center building always looked like a ship of some sort, it was always sus and it was obviously always planned to be a thing. Removing the Super Dimensional Yggdrasil IV would just cut valuable Bart screentime, most of the party members get so little screentime/involvement as is in Disc 2 why would you want to cut it? The biggest letdown about Bart's storyline was him immediately instituting democracy/elections as soon as he becomes a king. Oh and also that's secretly what his dad always wanted??? Pretty big letdown after all the effort you go through to get him there, but whatever.

I didn't mind the reveal in general, what annoyed me was there should have been a lot more build up to finding out about it as well as some scene dedicated to calling a truce or whatever so they could go over there and get it. And yeah it was kind of dumb that was what his dad wanted, it seemed like it should have been Bart's decision that he makes himself so he can still go on adventures and be more mobile rather than sitting on a throne all day.

Every time I played Disc 2, it always feels like that's how they intended to do it, and that it wasn't budget constraints.

I think the team was trying to mirror Evangelion's ending episodes.

Apparently the Mass Driver facility was supposed to get expanded on more, among other things. It was a budget/time issue but they decided to go that route rather than end things on disc 1 and hope a sequel could get greenlit.

Every time I played Disc 2, it always feels like that's how they intended to do it, and that it wasn't budget constraints.

I think the team was trying to mirror Evangelion's ending episodes.

Squaresoft straight up cut the budget and final dev of Xenogears 8 months sooner than originally agreed upon,
Disc 2 was supposed to turn into a Space Odyssee 2001 tier of introspective nightmare with the main cast fighting the ultimate core essence of what makes the Gears have their hidden soul/spirit and releasing those demons so that the gears could never again be used for war.

It -was- budget cut to hell and the end of Xenogears -is- a thoughtstream of Takahashi and wife Tanaka's depression about having their passion project cut down and killed.

That is all I have to say about the matter.

XG went over budget and over deadline FF8 notwithstanding, the rest of what you wrote looks like headcanon.

sorry that you feel that way
Takahashi Tetsuya will -never- admit to it again as the clusterfrick ending was miraculously in-line with the bullshit Evangelion series,
And all the fanfarts basically spawned the support for Xenosaga, which in respect to the original Xenogears has shat upon the intention of the original in wholesale form.

            Xeno
            >alien
            Gear
            >the gears are the giant robots with some kind of hidden soul
            ponderous.

No the reality is Squaresoft didn't "run out of budget" they just shitcanned the rest of the development that they had already pushed an unrealistic dev time on with their newbie/B-team devs.

If Xenogears was truly completed the way it was storyboarded it would stand alone as one of the greatest sci fi stories in video games ever made.
Instead we get a Disc 1 with great momentum and a disc 2 that turns into 2 homies sittin on a chair pondering the big whatifs of life with no actual resolution or clarity.

It isn't that it's super deep, it's that the worldbuilding has so much more going on than other games care to put in. Although I'm sure if I played it when I was 16 or younger I'd think it was the most deep and thought provoking piece of media ever conceived. The moment that it clicked for me that the bible stuff was pure window dressing and nothing else was when Miang calls Ramsus Ramses. He's never called this before or after and there's no point in having called him that then, if I had to guess it's because so much of japanese is saying words that can have several different meanings so in that moment they were trying to invoke the biblical meaning of the name Ramses but it feels totally pointless. Imo you could replace every bible name in the game and it would still be a really cool story but just like with all the mecha anime and Star Wars references, they love to wear their inspirations on their sleeve.

Literally nothing, them and Ramsus get off scot free. You see a brief scene with them at the end where Ramsus comes to terms with how wrong he's been all along, then you never see them again. They don't help out in the finale or anything.

Never explained. You go through Krelian's full Solaris facility and most of it is Wels conversion stuff, a room that has the protags' info, an omnigear room, and some stuff that's there to make you wonder.

    >story doesn't matter in videogames, but you should play this one old title that is only worth it for the story.
Gameplay is ass and simple. Random battles. Most of the dungeons are boring, annoying and terribly designed. There's platforming for some reason, badly implemented. They forgot to expand the Ost after the first couple of towns, so you're hearing the same songs over and over and over again. There's basically no side content to do. The story, lore and the characters are amazing.
