And if they consider field ops unimportant enough that they can exclude it from an expansion while single-playerfying the rest of the game what is even the point of this being an MMO?

It's a single player story game that gets broken up by bits of gameplay that can be played multiplayer if you wish.
And if you want to take it further, you can then do those multiplayer segments on much much harder difficulty modes.
Also the optional dungeons and raids that aren't required for the story are for multiplayer gameplay.

I dunno, the maps are all fairly small, and I imagine if there were zero instances and we all shared the same floor it'd be hell to get anything done. We'd just have lots and lots of spawn camping.
On the other hand, it is lonely, and I wish there was some sort of competition between resource nodes, at least on each instance.

It's weird that there are so many neat little places in the overlord maps that no fate, hunt, main or side quest ever take you to.
What. You're completely backwards. That's like the worst thing about the game. Every corner of every map has something. Whether it's a FATE, a tribe quest, a hunt mark, or a sidequest.
FFXI had tons of unused/dead areas and it made the world feel so much more alive. FFXIV devs on the other hand refuse to let their modeling work go unused.

1.0 had an open world, it wasn't great and was mostly copy-pasted tilesets, it also ran like pure shit. I'm chalking up how the current set up and design philosophy towards how zones are made is primarily because of mixture of technical debt from 1.0 to AAR's development and operating under the assumption that their using a fork of the Crystal Tools engine and not the Luminous Engine.
The only interesting thing about 1.0's open world to me is hamlet defense. But from watching videos it doesn't really look that fun.
Hamlet defence was really the only thing that was lost that was somewhat worthwhile. 1.0 had a lot of interesting ideas and takes on mmo features, but a good amount of them in practice were either quite tedious, just plain dated or badly designed, especially the UI and leveling process.
AAR and beyond has it's issues, but in terms of QoL improvements and general accessability, it is the reason why FFXIV is currently relatively successful and 1.0 was the failure it was.
They're basically forcing everyone in the duty roulette, open world is pretty much just for crafters at this point

Realistically at this point we need an admin to come in and rangeban them for good. It's been going on for more than a year now, they've made it clear their only interest is to turn these threads into /xivg/ 2: Electric Boogaloo, they maliciously evade filters that were created specifically for them (the equivalent to blocking someone ingame, and then they just made alts to continue pestering you), and ignoring them doesn't work because they either reply to themselves, or some anon will ERP with them.
No idea who they are, what has been compelling them to do this for over a year now (literally every single day since they appeared last February), they're here 16 hours straight and the only reprieve is when they go to bed, but it's clear they're never going to stop unless they eventually get bored. But looking at the degenerates in /xivg/ and how long they've been keeping it up, unless the game outright shuts down I don't expect them to ever go away. And even THEN.....
Mods should just enforce rule 13 on them, I have no idea why they refuse to (when I have seen them ban other avatarags, like that one femroe a while back). No other game on this board has this problem of some attentionprostitute breaking rule 13 every thread with impunity and just contributing shitposts and pissing everyone there off. So I don't know why FFXIV has to be subject to this and FFXIV alone.

Hunt trains are just a troony freakshow SE let get way out of hand. Make hunt bosses require pop items like they did many of XIs notorious monsters. Make them more difficult and far more rewarding. Nothing can be interesting about content where 800 people troon out and slam into a boss.
