I love MH dos so much

The most realest video game ever.

It’s breeding season boys time to get sap plants.

MH dos is one of my favorite games of all time. It’s unique compared to all the other monster hunters because of how many extra systems there are. And also for being probably the most frick you hard game in the series

it’s actually pretty disliked in Japan for being too hard. When gamers complained about it, the only response the devs had was “nature is harsh”

badass

I dont understand this series. so you fight a bunch of dragons like its shadow of the colossus?

Fight the big monsters to collect materials to craft new equipment. Repeat this indefinitely. Its fun for a while.

how do the new ones compare to the older ones in the series?

Ive only played the non-retro ones. But i have the impression the newer games are less complex and more newbie friendly.

The newest one is the most complex one at least in terms of raw combat, the most moves and combo potential, both for you and for monsters. It's a bit arcadey though

      You grind a lot, basically.

It's all bossfights against lots of different monsters (so not just dragons, but monkeys, insects, crabs and other weird shit like a unicorn). The combat itself, so your moves and the monster's moves, are pretty basic but there are some things that elevate it, like the mons taking different damage for every body part, the staggering and tripping thresholds, damaging body parts etc. The best things about it is how positioning heavy the combat is, since your roll has pitiful iframes, so it's best to just stay out of the monsters attacks rather than to roll through them (even though it's possible in most cases).

how do the new ones compare to the older ones in the series?

The new ones are less positioning focused and more counter focused, which robs them of their unique appeal imo. They are also largely easier, since you can just pummel most monsters with your new enhanced combat kit.

the lack of a enemy health bar legit ruins these games
having to look up the weakpoints online shouldnt be a mechanic

Just pay attention to the monster, and read the flavortext it’ll tell you all that stuff

Try observing the monster, experimenting if you are an idiot and overall gitting gud.

Thats why I use hammers. Bashing their head is good 90% of the time.

You can see which hitzones are weakspots since the blood splatter will be bigger, but I agree, especially since there's no way of knowing the exact values nor the elemental weaknesses.

    What you mean?

The game introduces a day night cycle. Areas and monsters will change depending on when you venture out for a quest.
For example the jungle area has an offshore island area that’s only available in the morning at low tide. But more crabs wake up in the morning so it’s a bit risky.

The game also has a seasons mechanic. After every few in day games the seasons change. This also effects all sorts of things. The quests you can take, the items and monsters you’ll find on those quests etc.

It’s best to go out gathering during breeding season for example, because that’s when there’s the most amount of docile monsters to carve

Combine this with a much stricter limit on monetary and item stocks, you have to play a lot more carefully.
You really have to plan out your in game weeks.
“I have 3 days to gather herbs before winter rolls through. Which then the snowy mountains will open up. then I can go at night to get more blango pelts for my next armor set. In the mornings I’ll go mining because then I can get sunshine ore

you wanna maximize your productivity every day. and you’re on a bit of a crunch to do things sometimes. So you’ve gotta make decisions- would you rather use your final day in summer to go hunt a summer exclusive monster, or gather summer only materials? Because it’s gonna be a little while before you get the chance again
