I made a thread a few hours ago discussing Old School Runescape. The thread kind of got derailed into a debate centered around the 2022 Pride Event. After some thinking, I realized that the MMORPG genre is all but completely dead. The top (western) MMOs have completely abandoned creativity, in return for the cash cow that is releasing an older version of the game to cash in on nostalgia. By very nature of what they are doing, this practice is unsustainable. When enough people are fed up with the modern game that there are official "classic" versions, that illustrates how far the MMO genre has fallen in the last decade. However, I do see the value in playing these classic versions. MMORPGs were huge from 2000-2012, almost representing an entire era of gaming. Allowing younger generations to experience these classic games is worthwhile. To be able to carry the legacy of what made these games great into the future. However, there becomes a time for new games, new ideas, new technologies to emerge. And for the past to become the past.

Go back.
Reject OSRS.
Return to 05 and early 06.
I'd like to but where?
Just found a private server called 05scape but there were only like 10 people on. Still comfier than anything Jagex will ever put out in the future
I assume Gankerscape is still going. Check /vg/.
That's 2007 moron
I thought it was 2006. Regardless, it's pre-GE.
Not really, it just doesn't have it.
Well what bad shit besides the GE was added around that time after 05-06?
Soul was completely sucked out
My nut was completely sucked out of my sack by your mother, you homosexual.
My condolences
This game had so much soul man, I miss those old days
lmao there was no price war when selling goods nobody DEMANDED to pay more for a product they just waited for someone to sell it low.
Yeah, I loved sitting in Falador park for hours manually typing out "selling whip 2m", that's what made the game fun
That's how I learned how to touch type.
it unironically made the game better
immersion is the ONLY good thing about MMORPGs
remove immersion with "QoL" mechanics such as the GE, and the game effectively loses what made it good in the first place
>i heckin LOVE streamlined single player MMOs SO much!!!
Wow. What a waste. The poor bowstring salesman.
>I'll pay 750 per!!!
>How many you want?
>10k
>Offers 300k gp
The worst thing about this is that they added those fukken Trading Posts to OSRS. You really wanna be a gay that doesn't actually go to the cities for items or to skilling locations for reliability and often a discount? Well here you go, here's a system when you can quickly put items up for sale and people can trade with some better reliability and convenience while still being a trade, so you're still avoiding the game and market warping nature of the GE.
What do the players do? They b***h and moan because it's still not fast enough and constantly go
>oh who cares, using this website is faster and more conveniently
Not realizing for a second that that's perfectly fine: have the in-game system for the non-autists that just want to trade and participate in the game, and the people who want more have their player-run systems, but uh oh, it turns out that a lotta players those shitc**t autists. It was the fukken canary in the coal mine about how the player-run polls and the game at large were gonna get fricked by rampant efficient-gays, and surprise surprise, now we get constant mingeing about shit like
>oh there's too many bots dumping items into the GE
>we need all these gold sinks n' shit to fix this rampant inflation
>somebody please save skilling; profitably is fricked by skilling items from PvE being insta-sold
>how could we POSSIBLY get people to meet up and interact in cities again
>Pre GE is in OSRS
>Everyone complains how bots literally just autotype in their sales so (you) can't compete, and you have to stop playing the game for a good 5-10 minutes just to sell your item, sometimes even more
>Community STILL doesn't want GE, so they try a new solution with the trading post
>Trading post is equally frustrating because people can ask to trade with you only to not show up to a location, and now you have to stop doing whatever content you are doing to take the trade or else the guy will just move on to someone else
>Community finally realises that GE is the solution to all the problems
>Gets introduced, nobody complains, only autists crying about "da gud ol dayz"
Frick off with this shitty meme. GE is gone for a good reason, and only people who actually played the game will understand why
>um actually I wanted it so you're wrong
frick off
Yes, I wanted it after seeing the 2 alternatives to it flop, as did over 75% of the community at the time who actually played the game
I’ve played it since 2005. Not once did I ever have trouble buying or selling anything, and nobody I knew used zybes or runehq forums to sell shit because they didn’t want to wait. Trading posts failure is proof of that
>However, I do see the value in playing these classic versions.
literally zero value
I disagree. These games were played by millions in their heyday. That is not insignificant
scape05*
Play RS3 ironman gays.
OSRS is an abomination. its 2007 RS2 with modern MMO crap built on top of it like raids.
>board that just gets mad at things to kill time to get mad at new thing gets mad at trivial thing instead of discussing game
Imagine my shock
It's funny just how quickly old school MMO players were disproven with the reintroduction of OSRS. People quickly realized that things like trying to buy niche items for quests wasn't that fun when people were trying to sell them for 50k. Even trying to sell off select items took hours. Not to mention how many scammers there were. Remember, the osrs playerbase flipped their shit at the start of the launch when jagex automatically changed unidentified herbs. The same playerbase would vote in GE. A huge update that changed RS forever.
Are there still a diehard few? Sure, just head on to Gankeridyascape. Probably the best private server ever created, in terms of scope and how well it really does emulate 2006 version of rs. But that playerbase is probably 100 total.
People don't actually want to play the game they did as a kid. People started leaving in droves after a few months of osrs. It would have closed already if they never updated it. The cold hard truth is that osrs is better than 2006/7 ever was and the direction RS should have gone from the start.
tl;dr nostalgia nostalgia nostalgia
game died the minute GE was introduced. the cold hard truth is that the popularity of a game has nothing to do with its quality. the only reason anybody wastes their time playing OSRS today is because they want to relive and 'complete' their childhood in an efficient manner by maxing in a way they never had the time or knowledge to do as a kid.
cope, it would be 100% better with 5000 dedicated players who want actual '07 than 100,000 tourists and bots that play the game now
Project Gorgon is pretty neat.
everyone but a few vocal morons realized that most decisions made by early MMOs were fricking stupid and interesting for 1 second before you realize they were just giant wastes of time
from there the rare game realized that they don't have to keep doing that shit, while most devolved to gacha or death
for some unknown reason those vocal morons will never shut the frick up about how much they miss getting their ass reamed
It's not about getting fricked in the ass it's about fostering a proper community that interacts with each other to forward their own goals. Talking with people about where to find certain items, grouping up for certain areas/camps, finding someone to craft you an item or joining a guild. The games are supposed to feel like real worlds, constructed worlds.
Jagex screwed over the Chronicle fanbase by cancelling the Chronicle beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in November 2015 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.
Do not buy Jagex games. Do not buy RuneScape membership. Do not buy MTX. Email The Carlyle Group and tell them that until Jagex atones for lying to and betraying the Chronicle fanbase, they will not see another thin dime.
JUSTICE FOR CHRONICLE.
You should make this copy pasta for FunOrb
FunOrb (Arcanists specifically) was the shit.
Yeah, but a lot of people actually like and remember that. I tried to keep it similar to the Artifact pasta where it's a card game barely anyone played.
(Also I actually did like Chronicle. I hope someone can make a private server for it)
place the valve copypasta
Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.
Do not buy Valve games. Do not buy Steam games. Email Gabe Newell and tell him that until Valve atones for lying to and betraying the Artifact fanbase, he will not see another thin dime.
JUSTICE FOR ARTIFACT.
This but unironically
I wish someone ripped the assets
Chronicle was actually kinda cool. Wtf is Jagex's problem with making games branching out from RS then abandoning them almost immediately after?
Vscape homies where we at?
Playing official RS is moronic, you'll just get banned for playing after grinding 200hr.
Play private servers that respect your time with 50x EXP rates.
I was playing vidyascape but then I saw the 2009scape singleplayer github
I kind of want to switch but I want the banter of vidyascape while playing and bots with PC sounds kinda gay
I am not a fan of the current state of MMOs and most everything worthwhile is locked in the 2000s and before.
Didn't read but RuneScape died in 2007. OSRS was a glimpse at the past but the community fricked it up in less than a year.
It started falling apart with the Skillcape update in 2005/6 if I recall.
Grand Exchange Black folk should go hang themselves.
Let the game die.
I wish WoW classic took the same approach as OSRS, give us the classic game and add more content. I'm actually having fun coming back to OSRS and doing quests I never did as a kid, seeing new content that's been added, but I got bored of WoW classic after a few days because it was the same thing I had already done years ago, knowing that the only thing that awaited me was more stuff that I had already done
Runescape was always just an idle mobile game before mobile gaming was a thing. Browser MMOs in general were way shittier than you remember them being, you were just a broke kid with nothing better to play.
Copium. I'd chill out on RuneScape after playing Quake all day.
First time I played Runescape was before they made tutorial island. You were just dropped in Lumbridge.
That game was called Runescape Classic when Runescape 2 came out (which is now called OSRS).
People still played Runescape Classic until they didn't and it was filled with bots. The day came when Jagex decided to get rid of it for good and although not many people played it, it was a sad day.
What's different with OSRS and Runescape Classic is that Jagex is updating OSRS and adding new content which is what keeps people playing it. Not nearly as many people play it during it's hay day but it's still alive to the point that they have the funds to keep it running. Unfortunately with how technology and games are evolving there could be a day that it will die and it will be a sad day.
As of now I will continue to play OSRS here and there while it's still around.
*Sorry I meant not as many people play it now as they did back in it's hay day.
The other difference is that even baseline 07 OSRS with no new updates had like 100 times the content and longevity of Classic. I can't believe it still had as many players as it did before they shut it down honestly
I believe that MMORPGs won't be good again until a proper VRMMORPG comes out that doesn't suck.
See you in 20 years.
ADD DUNGEONEERING TO OSRS
seriously, it used every aspect of the game in a compact team based speed run mode
I won't come back until they do
as long as it isn't a skill
agreed it shouldn't be a skill, even though the resource dungeons could be expanded and tied it together with the world nicely.. but just make it a minigame, give it only cosmetic rewards or something PLEASE
I guess gauntlet could be a base for them to add it. With the current version being the solo mode.. but you know it or CoX are not even comparable to the depth DG had(has?)
It would have to be changed a bunch like no BoB obviously, but summoning familiars should absolutely be added
yeah it's a shame no one has made a dungeoneering standalone clone like wtf it's been 12 years?
Maybe you homosexuals will realize nobody liked Dungeoneering.
The Gauntlet and Raids are your Dungeoneering, and they're optional activities, not a skill, as it should be.
Gauntlet is absolute garbage compared to dungeoneering
frick that add summoning instead
Just give me a standalone dungeoneering game thanks.
Really they did a pride event? Isn’t all their playerbase chuds?
They banned all the chuds
Just started playing a few days ago. What should I do on a f2p account
Get that fishing and cooking up so you can catch and cook lobsters and swordfish, at least that's what I did when I first started playing back in the day when I played f2p.
>Have to do Cook's Assistant for the easy-access cooking range
>Start fishing so you can get good food, at least up to trout/salmon
>South of Lumbridge is a mine and fishing area for shrimp
>Cook everything you've caught on the cooking range in Lumbridge
>Get together your best melee gear and go north of the goblin house and west of the cow farm to kill chickens for their feathers
>Get maybe 1000 feathers
>Stop by the Sheep Shearer's house to pick up 8 onions for questing
>Go to Port Sarim and buy a Fly Fishing Rod
>Go to magic shop in Port Sarim and buy an Eye of Newt
>Start Witch's Potion in Rimmington because it's easy magic XP
>Eye of Newt, Onion, Burnt Meat, Rat's Tail
>Take your new Fly Fishing Rod and go to Barbarian Village
>Fish Trout and Salmon
>Pickup trout and salmon from power-fishers, this will be useful for backup training food and for cooking XP so you don't burn the real training food, lobsters and swordfish.
>After 1000 feathers are used up, have enough food to get cash on the side from killing monsters and leveling up.
