I need to buy a psvita memory card and looking on ebay I noticed they're all suddenly much cheaper?
What's the deal?
Are they scam items?
Is the demand so low they're just being given away?
What gives? How do I know I won't end up buying a dud card?

Dunno. I'll bump since I'm buying a handheld soon myself: a japanese imported DSi XL for $50. Love japanese sellers so fricking much.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Japanese sellers but these cards are crazy cheap, I refuse to believe they are actually this good
      What the frick

They're cheap because they're not necessary. Actually, you do need one if you have an older Vita model, but the smallest size will do. If you're smart, you'll use a regular microSD instead.

      i actually have two vitas
a modded and an unmodded one

you dont need them anymore, there's been a discovery that 1000 models had like 2gb internal memory that was untapped before.

        this
it like, re-partitions the internal memory to make a virtual memory card, and then once you use that to get things going you can move everything to your SD2VITA
im sure theres a way higher chance of bricking your system doing that instead of using a small memory card but it worked fine when i did it

Frick their proprietary bullshit. Hack the motherfricker and use an SD card. SD2VITA all the way Ganker bros.

I know Sony is primarily to blame here since they did everything possible to discourage microSD adapters, but I hate the SD2VITA so much. That at the end of it all, after so much effort and engineering, the solution settled on requires a firmware hack and giving up your cartridge slot. The latter is a big dealbreaker for me. I own physical games, I prefer to play physical games, and that I can't both take advantage of better, cheaper storage AND use cartridges bothers me to no end.

The firmware part isn't as bad, aside from the fact that CFW seems to have stagnated and still requires a downgrade. I know not many Vita games required firmware beyond that particular point, but I actually have one or two which do and I'd like to play them without ripping and patching them.

Well, because of these things, I'm using a 64gb memory card that I got from Japan when the platform was still being supported.

There is a solution that stills allows you to use your cartridges, but it requires a hardware mod and the 3G model. If you meet those prerequisites, grab a psvsd instead.

Sadly I do not have a 3G model, but I really appreciate you making me aware of this. I'd say it's worth acquiring a 3G model for this particular mod.

Just be aware that it requires you to open up your Vita, remove the 3G module, and solder in the psvsd, meaning that it's a bit tedious to switch SD cards, so grab a really big one so you never have to bother with that. I'm seeing some results on ebay that have a psvsd already pre-installed if you're a bit squeamish doing the installation yourself.

I've already looked it up. I don't have an issue with opening up the Vita. It doesn't appear to require solder, either, none of the guides I've seen so far mention it. There's also an SD extension you can get, it replaces the SIM card port so you can easily swap SD cards, which sounds like a pretty convenient feature.

if youre gonna buy another Vita and you already have carts and a memory card, then why would you buy one to hard mod? just buy one to softmod and use the other one stock with your actual games

Because I like using one machine as opposed to two.

In all fairness, that memory was reserved for the firmware, and there's the possibility they might have been anticipating the need for that much free storage over time... or it could have been another instance of the westerners within the branch sabotaging the Vita's release.

I will definitely say the latter. Couldn't even offer up 512mb or something of that so people could at least play a physical game and save their data without buying an overpriced proprietary SD card?

Wouldn't surprise me, they really wanted the Vita to fail. Shame since, at least the 1000 model, is honestly one of the best handhelds I've ever gotten to use in terms of feel.

The 1K, 2K and TV all use the same chips. I think it's pretty obvious that they designed the Vita with a crapton of internal memory for firmware reasons initially, but when it came to the 2K and TV they realized they were never going to use it so for those models they shipped them with part of the internal storage partitioned as a backup memory card. (although even then there's still like another 1.5gb left unused)

Why they didn't decide to unlock that same memory in the 1K is a mystery. Maybe they thought it would be too dicey to partially format the internal storage in an update, even though doing it in CFW seems pretty safe. Would have been safer if it were official since at least if you bricked your vita for an official update they could have had some customer service to replace it for you.

I suspect it was to save face more than anything else. Cat's out of the bag now, but even then it's knowledge largely limited to enthusiasts. If it had made it to the mainstream that they were holding out on perfectly usable memory, even if they had a valid reason for it, there would be tons of people just like anon calling them out for doing it to begin with.

Buying a card was pretty much mandatory, however a hacked vita can use microSD with a 1 dollar adaptor that goes in the game slot.

A fat system needs the basic b***h card to get hacked and then you can use a big microSD instead, a slim system has 1 gig internal space so you don't need a Sony card to hack it

I have both a modded and unmodded vita
I don't know why, I guess it just feels dirty using a modified OS, like I want to keep her pure and clean
      Idk
I do have a modded one I have to play a frickton of different games
But I mainly find myself playing on my white-blue pure OS vita
I like keeping her clean and happy 🙂

vita vs n3ds, which one runs more games?

Probably the Vita since it's more powerful. The N3DS is still worth picking up because of its 2 screen gimmick.

3DS is better for Pokemon and DS emulation since Vita can't emulate DS

I haven't checked the prices in a while, but be prepared that memory card can come borked
    >struggled with 16gb card, even though most of my vita games are on cartridges
    >a few years later bought a 64gb card
    >mfw
    >happy as heck
    >some time passed
    >"Ah, time to play muh Vita!"
    >database error when I power it up
    >games won't start, physical and digital alike
    >insert original memcard
    >"it just works"

64gb cards are infamous for having recall-worthy quality control issues. I have 2 and neither of them work.
