I play Starcraft 1 with a friend.

I play Starcraft 1 with a friend. He's inexperienced with video games in general, but he likes Starcraft 1 because it's chill and casual (at least the way we play it).
However, he's not so good at it because he likes to turtle and build up his base. This often results in him losing unfortunately, and as much as one enjoys them game, it sucks when you lose all the time.
I recently got to thinking, what if Starcraft 1 isn't the right game for him? And so I'm curious, are there any co-op, multiplayer RTS that focus on collective base defense? Preferably a bit casual?
I would like to continue enjoying sharing the joys of gaming with him.

Walling up is a viable strategy in AoE2 - are you mostly playing against the AI with him?

Why don't you play co-op against the computer?

We either dominate or get rekt. Really depends on if we're fighting 2 protoss or not.

Comfy basebuilding co-op strategy games are a rare combination. I'd point you more towards games in the survival crafting genre. Games like:
      Terraria
      Minecraft
      Valheim
      The Forest
      Don't Starve Together
      Astroneer

I suggested a colony survival game similar to Minecraft and he seemed very uninterested.

2v6 or 3(you+him+1protoss ai)v5 on various community maps from http://www.panschk.de/mappage/maplist.php?orderby=mapname. That's what my friend and I used to do a lot. It's best to go against 5 or 6 zerg ai.

      I'll look into this, thanks.

since you have a friend to play with, highly recommend sc2 arcade Neostar RPG.

Is that an independent game? Within SC2? I haven't played Starcraft 2 yet.

Yep. We've tried to drag in other friends but they are vastly opposed.
Personally, I never really liked AoE, but he might enjoy the aesthetics.

yea its a custom game. most casual players here stick with arcade mode

You can try Age of Mythology I guess.
The aesthetics are unique and the game itself plays more like Starcraft then the other AoE games. Make sure you avoid the Chinese DLC like the plague (my recommendation would be to pirate the original game + expansion instead of buying it at all though that might not be feasible for you two).

Play Supreme Commander forged alliance (and get the Forever multiplayer client). It basically rewards you for economy builds if you have a teammate that does attacking. Would recommend ued as you can build long range artillery and novax satellites

This. You can even play the campaigns co-op, which reward turtling.

Play comp stomps in Supreme Commander with him. The game is also very aggressive and depends on map control in MP, but in coop against the AI turtling and building up is good fun.

just play Legion TD 2 or something like that anon. Turtling is NEVER a viable multiplayer strategy unless you're playing something like Dawn of War 2 king of the hill

Just from memory, games that favour a strong defence are: Empire Earth (those walls are ridiculous, they withstand nukes), possibly Supreme commander (strong bases are no joke and you can 100% win by pure turtling considering the late-stage base weapons like map-spanning artillery etc, especially if you play UEF), possibly Act of War (great game overall, well implemented artillery, garrissoning buildings and building base defences can be very effective considering that you can't really afford to lose too many units in reckless assaults in the game due to the economy system)

Starcraft 2 co-op mode might be up your alley. You can pick the difficulty level and it's free.

AOE3 is f2p it has Co op historical battles and turtling is very fun and rewarding in that game.

Try deserts of kharak. It's comparatively slow but you can't construct buildings. You can still play defensively and maybe it will take him out of his turtling mindset.

it would maybe start appearing as an offshoot peon harass unit IF the damage was doubled AND the movement speed was improved by default

Not exactly what you asked for but he might enjoy Anno then, arguably one of the most comfy base building experience

Turtling can be pretty cool in company of heroes depending on the map. There's not that much base-building compared to other games, but defending can be fun

Sc2 coop has some defense-oriented maps and commanders, but in general offensive play is much more rewarded. He could play on lower difficulties, but he would have trouble and probably annoy allies on brutal or mutators if he ever tried them.

    >commanders
    swann, karax, mengsk, zeratul
    >maps
dead of night, miner evacuation, temple of the past, oblivion express, void launch

    >However, he's not so good at it because he likes to turtle and build up his base
    all inexperienced players do this
when building up a base becomes second nature a player is free to do other stuff while the base builds
