I played Call of Cthulhu for the first time and it was really interesting. I enjoyed the game mechanics and the mystery leading up to the monster. However, I am really bad at roleplaying and everyone at the table was really good. I feel like I made the experience worse for everyone. Should I even show up for the next session?

being good at roleplaying is simply DOING things. no one gives a frick about your acting skills or if you're bad at puzzles. bad roleplaying is not engaging with the game. when the GM asks you "what is your character doing now" you better have an answer besides "doing the same thing I was doing before" or "staying in my hiding spot so I don't get caught."

essentially, "good roleplaying" can be interpreted as "novel actions"

honestly though if you really feel like you're bad at roleplaying just because you have a low IQ or EQ or something (nothing to be ashamed of) communicate that with the DM. the DM will then start to use you only for parts of the game you can meaningfully contribute too, which is good.

You're not gonna get any better by not practicing. A thing to learn is that the character you envision might not be the character that emerges through play. Steer into what emerges. And remember occasionally to shut up and let other people yap, or to support their yapping.

I'd say this is good advise, but it's hard to get out of the mindset of a kid that put his hand on the stove if the GM ever gets mad at you for saying something he doesn't like.

I really don't remember spelling it with an s. Just an honest mistake.

No one cares, they are just glad you showed up.
People only care about their role playing, people don't care about your role playing unless you are intentionally trying to frick up the game.

There's 0 shame in not being a theaterhomosexual. EMBRVCE OSR EMBRVCE TRVDVTION. games like CoC completely miss the point of roleplaying games, particularly the GAME part.

I like OSR gaming, but you are a moron. CoC is fine for what it sets out to do.

CoC is fine if what you've set to do is sit around and have 0 fun What's truly hard to understand is how people can sit there and just talk as if they're some 1920s professor or investigator for literally the entire session because you'll be doing NOTHING exciting until the very end, where the monster is revealed and kills you all or drives you all insane without you being able to do a single thing about it. I'm here to play a GAME homosexual

          >CoC is fine if what you've set to do is sit around and have 0 fun
It's the 3rd largest TTRPG in history.
          lol. lmao.
Imagine having a brain this stunted and dumb.

And the largest are D&D and pathfinder. Tells you all you need to know about these alleged "large RPGs". Fact of the matter is most of the TTRPG fanbase is made up of theaterkids, trannies, and CR zoomers and their tastes mean nothing so appealing to popularity when the fanbase is made up of those degenerates is pathetic at best

Oh, I didn't know you were actually moronic.
My bad, continue about your day.

      CoC isn't OSR lol.
It's the GOAT'd BRP system. Why does this one guy always post about ''theater'' when someone talks about CoC? Does it live in his head rent free? Is he mad he can't just roll dice and calculate damage for 2 hours to get some imaginary loot?

        >Why does this one guy always post about ''theater'' when someone talks about CoC?
Because he's a troll who knows he gets easy (you)s from (you) who can't help but take the bait.

Bad role-playing in CoC would be using mythos knowledge your character doesn't have, treating encounters like your bookish scholar or gin soaked prostitute is a heroic D&D fighter, and conveniently "forgetting" the phobias and psychosis that your character earned exist when planning their actions.

Definitely show up for next session. You'll get into it after a session or two, it comes with playing more.

Don't be a lol random spaz and you're fine, just for what your character would do based on who they are in the game world

I really like Coc and for roleplaying, other than the usual rules of ooc/ic; I find it's best that your players are willing to throw other characters under the bus. I sometimes add motivations in order to do so, so it doesn't feel too personal.
In my experience I find if your players are capable of betrayal, then it is truly a good paranoid experience.

Just allow yourself to get into it and you'll get better. The roleplaying aspect is something that you have to get used to and it'll come with time. However, this is a two-way street, so you have to make sure that you put some effort into it.

I don't like games with monsters you can't fight. If it exists, it should be possible to kill it.
