The only game you could compare it to was Demon's Souls

Good game, about 50 percent of it is unfinished mess though. Step down from Demon's Souls.

      >I didn't want any more though and haven't played any of the newer games.

      All you need.

      >Demon's Souls
      >Dark Souls
      >Bloodborne
      >Sekiro
      >Elden Ring

Don't bother with DS2 or DS3. They were contractual obligations.

i got it on ps3 right around the pc release. had a friend beg me to play it when it first released, my autism made me want to play demon's souls first and i got filtered by it and lost interest.
saw ps3 DaS for cheap and thought i'd give it a whirl. took a long time before it clicked for me. now i've beaten every souls game save for sekiro which i simply haven't tried yet. beelined elden ring real bad so there's easily 60% of the game i haven't touched still.

Got bored of it fast. The world was so boring and uninspired.

Then I played Bloodborne, and loved it so much that I realized that souls games had some potential to be good. Then I played Nioh 2 and realized that no matter how good a souls game is, they are just too slow and boring.

I miss the philosophy of generally trying to "fairly" frick you at every opportunity. It kept you on your toes. Now thanks to mainstream success all the lovely edges from DS1 and Demon Souls have been sanded off in newer fromsoft titles. Makes me sad.

I played demon souls in 2009 and then dark souls in 2011.
i only got demon souls because it was a meme of "lol, you gotta try this weird game, it's so hard to even do anything in it"
had a lot of fun with it.

I got filtered by Anor Londo back when I first played it in 2012. Not by the enemies mind you, by the part where you have to drop down onto that beam to get into attic area with the painting guardians.
I didn't understand that I could just drop down onto it without dying because every other game I had played gated me so strictly to the intended area so I spent hours exploring the area, back-tracking, and all that. My parents hadn't gotten our house connected to the Internet back then so I had no way to just look things up. I wasn't the brightest kid.

2012-2013 was my first time and i absolutely fell in love with it so much it made me get a used ps3 just to play demon's souls. I still remember my first build as well, some fatrolling shitter build with boar helm trying to defense max with the halberd, my beloved.

360 at launch, with the Engrish version. It was great.
I didn't own a PS3, but I'd been reading about Demon's Souls in GameInformer & online (it got tons of threads here) and was totally enthralled everything I heard. Picked the disc up from Gamestop as soon as I could.
Funnily enough, I didn't find it "hard", but the hands-off guidance, world structure, and multiplayer made the game totally unique from everything I'd played thus far.
Being afraid of dying certainly made it fun. I never really got that feeling again until ER.

2011, shortly after launch, with the collector's edition on PS3. I had been eagerly awaiting it since Demon's Souls was my favorite PS3 game. It surpassed my expectations in every way and is one of my favorite games of all time.

I first got it for free on Xbox live in 2015, got filtered by the catacombs and Taurus Demon. 2022 I decided to give ER a shot despite not being into challenging games and loved it so much I did multiple NG+ right after finishing it. Decided to give DS Remastered another chance since I believed to understand how to play Souls games and loved it as well. Understanding that some areas are just too hard for now and coming back later is something ER taught me and i was able to apply it here. Also I didnt know that rolling had i-frames until I was through half of ER kek. My first playthrough build of DS1 was with the Claymore and Silver Knight Set post Anor Londo. Used the Grass Crest Shield in offhand and for blocking occassionally.

I was 16 when I was first introduced to it. My older friends all lived together (8 people or so) and were playing it on their Xbox 360, and would talk shit about how far they were and what they found.

I was sent to my father after being expelled, and instead of studying for my GED test at 18, I studied dark souls for a year.

When I came back to town, the house had grown empty except for 2, some of them had left on bad terms, and some of them had fallen to drugs, or crime.

They were disinterested as I speed ran the game in 4 hours in front of them, and although it was bittersweet, I accomplished what I set out to do. I got good.

I didn’t think about studying until I got to the door of the testing center, and for a moment I panicked. “Holy shit,” I thought “I didn’t even open the books my dad got for me.”

Well I went inside and the first question was a2+b2=c2. It never went beyond 9th grade level anything. I scored in the upper 98-99th percentile.

2016 initially after reading a bunch of comparisons with MonHun. I don't even think I made it to the Taurus Demon before dropping it because I was expecting something closer to MH (boss focused) rather than the exploration focus of DS. It didn't click with me until a year later, though I still ended up playing it like MH by making a variety of weapons (spears, rather) to use to target boss'/enemies' weaknesses after looking them up. It wasn't until after playing Bloodborne that I embraced the idea of playing the games blind because the sense of discovery and world exploration fostered by my own curiosity granted more enjoyment than beating the bosses efficiently.

How did you guys discover the series? I was looking for coop RPGs with my best friend in 2010 and we found a review about Demon's Souls. I bought it from Gamestop the same day and after watching me play he bought it too.

My cousin had a ps3 and was buying literally every game that came out for it, even if he didn't plan to play them. He got demon souls and told me to try it without telling me anything. He wanted a laugh at how hard it was. We then spent several weeks playing through it together. Basically treated it like handing off the controller on old nes games like we used to.

played it for the first time around 2017 after a friend recomended it and had a lot of fun with it, both playing alone and playing with my mate.
but the game was definetly messy, full of bugs and the hit detection was funky to say the least.

    still had a great time
