People always think about how to open a portal, but what if you figure out how to open it and then can never close it again?

Things like gravity, ozone, electromagnetic fields, light, all kinds of things would slowly leak out in a way that's not supposed to be possible ordinarily and it might eventually result in the entire solar system being fricked up prematurely

Well no shit. There's a reason the portal bait has never had an answer, the portals allow for all kinds of paradoxes.
Get two portals facing each other parallel to the ground and you can generate infinite energy off gravity.

        Anonymous

You are not generating infinite energy and this would solve itself in multiple ways. For example the energy density of the portal would decrease by the amount of energy it transfers. If you ever heard of Hawking radiation, what really happens is that the outside space is given energy and that decreases the density of the black hole, but the loss of curvature predates loss of density. The space dictates the fate of the black hole, as if the black hole was a hologram, a mere shadow posed on space, and because the space of one place gains energy, the space of the black hole loses it and its curvature with it, literally constricting the black hole object into nonexistence.

And what do you think gravity is? Mass is moving through the Higgs field and this generates force known as gravity. It curves space around itself. What it means in practice is that all roads of space lead to the center of the Earth more likely than elsewhere. This force is not generated out of nowhere and the laws of thermodynamics are in motion. Your portal would require energy, and would need energy proportional to the space it is removing the energy from.

I have done mushrooms in high doses and practiced meditation for a few years. You can get as "high" on meditation. Mushrooms aren't doing anything your brain cannot do by itself already. Psilocin is very similar to serotonin and thus attaches itself to 5HT1a and 5HT2a (among other) serotonin receptors and activates them. You can train yourself to do this spontaneously with your own neurochemistry, go into full blown tryptamine palaces and even beyond to absolute nothingness. Serotonergic psychedelics and some phenethylamines like mescaline just get you there without training. It is also effortless to walk around on psychedelics while in these states, something that is very hard to train to do by yourself.

I don't think the true horror of SOMA is the existential crisis but rather the fact that we lie to ourselves when faced with horrible truth. Deep down back in his mind, Simon knows he is doomed, he is not going anywhere. But he invents himself a nice fairytale that gives him hope and a reason to live for a little longer. We do this all the time. Everyone you know and love will die. That's why it is meaningful to go on and find meaning.

If you want pure existential crisis, play Metal Gear Solid 2 right after you finish 1. It also has the same ending as SOMA in a way.

yes they do, memorylets. I read it like 8 years ago and I still remember it clearly. your body disintegrates, the information is transmitted and a new you is created at the end location. this information was kept secret because nobody wants to die and it would destroy the economy and everything else.
this whole disintegration process is what powers the malicious AI which is the villain of the first two books.

I don't get what's so scary about this. Like, as long as it's not painful, who cares? Both instances are me, so I place more value on the instance which is more conveniently positioned. Rev up the suicide booth, man! I already kill myself when I go to sleep each night, so why be so obsessed with preserving the current instance of my consciousness in favor of any other instance? That's just mindlessly following your instincts without really thinking about the implications.

Even if, hypothetically, the teleporter malfunctions and fails to suicide booth me, I'm not going to end up in one of those sci-fi tropes where my clone and I fight to the death. I'm going to walk out of the teleporter and end my life as efficiently as possible. My clone knows I will do this, because he is me, so he has no reason to do any of the usual bullshit and will simply continue on his way.

          Anonymous

Even with your awareness you are just a pile of meat, don't kid yourself.
But that's completely irrelevant, a computer doesn't stop functioning just because it enters screensaver mode. There is uninterrupted continuity between your brain before sleep and after sleep, which is not the same for destruction of cells.

But if your definition of dying is every time you lose awareness, i.e. yawning, getting zapped by static electricity, having a bucket of cold water poured over you, being jumpscared (which are all moments when the "aware" part of the brain take a backseat and instincts take over) then this discussion will never get far, so carry on.

            Anonymous

That is my definition of dying, yes, but my entire point is that it doesn't scare me at all because it doesn't mean anything and is inevitable to begin with. There's no reason not to simply accept oblivion and allow my clone to walk out of the other end of the teleporter. I still consider that to be 'me' regardless of whatever arbitrary definition anybody else gives.

You are not, the dreams change you. But why does that matter? You dont stop existing when you dream, teleportation does involve no longer existing, at least for a very small time frame.

          Anonymous

What is 'you'? How can you be said to exist while you are incapable of recognizing and perceiving your existence? That is the most basic tenet of sapience, and while you are sleeping, regardless of whether you are dreaming, it is lacking. 'You' is just your sapient stream of consciousness. If your sapience vanishes, then logic dictates that you also vanish.

The definition of death is the disjunction of the composite.

            Anonymous

I know i exist because i'm thinking, perception has nothing to do with existence or sapience at all. I dont know if you are real though, but im without a doubt real and that doesnt change when i sleep, the only thing that changes then is my perception of reality, but that would also change if i become blind or death.

Death happens when i stop being aware of my own existence, we suppose that's what happens when our biological body "dies" (we don't have any proof of that though, but there is nothing we can do about that)

              Anonymous

Awareness and perception are synonyms, anon. Each night you go to sleep, you cease to be aware of your existence while you are unconscious. It's really not any different to dying. You wake up and you can retroactively tell yourself that you existed while you were asleep, but a clone can do the same thing perfectly well, too.

Having your entire concept of self tied to the single unbroken consciousness is lunacy, frankly, and only works as long as you don't think too hard about it.

                >You wake up and you can retroactively tell yourself that you existed while you were asleep, but a clone can do the same thing perfectly well

your point being? i'm real and the clone is not.
                >hurr what if glowies kidnapped you during the night, ran you through a cloning machine and put the clone in your bed, you can't know that didn't happen!
then i'm an ersatz being and you can scratch the part about me being real. continued existence of physical matter i.e. "me" is what is important, not "continued awareness/perception"
                >some of your braincells die during the night! you're not the same person anymore!
some of your braincells are dying as we speak yet you have continued awareness. even if a teleporter assembles you from the same material you still died when you were disassembled atom by atom. what comes out the other side is a clone made of the same material you're made of right now, you're still dead because your brain and body was obliterated even if it was reassembled later. if you claim that the teleporter being is you because it has your memories and thinks it's you, then the same would be true for clones not made of you and there would be multiple yous. souls don't transfer or get copied.

                >your point being? i'm real and the clone is not

                Anonymous

How exactly is a clone not real? What is your criteria for being real?

I'm not saying that continued perception is important, I'm saying that for 8 hours a night, 'you' does not exist in any meaningful fashion. That's just death by any other name. So what if you come back with no harm done, it still doesn't change the fact that you suffered ego death. You can't say with certainty that you existed in that time, all you can say is that you aren't sure you existed in that time.

Apply the same logic to a teleporter and it becomes clear that it doesn't really matter. You go to sleep because the 8 hours of sleep will improve you despite the ego death. You use a teleporter because the new location will improve you despite the ego death.

All you need to do is create a contract with yourself to do everything in your power to leave no loose ends if you decide to take an action that involves undergoing ego death in order to improve yourself.

Yes but teleporters usually take you apart and reconstruct you elsewhere. This one doesn't, it reconstructs you first out of matter it has stored up and then kills the original after. I would, if I could set it up so it doesn't kill me. I'd love to have clones of myself and I genuinely wouldn't mind being a clone either so long as I don't suffer accelerated aging or other bullshit.

I couldn't stand playing SOMA, literal moron-bait. If you ever even read an introduction to the philosophy of mind it's just reddit nonsense. Go back to being awed by 10 min youtube videos.

I'd probably doubt that he'd kill the five rather than the one but he could just be an idiot. Either way I'd likely freeze up and the trolley would go where it goes.

i shoot the guy on the top tracks
now the man at the lever can divert the trolley to the now empty track

      top obviously.

Chances are you are going to kill at least 1 persons on the bottom, at least you have a little better than a 1/7 chance of not killing anyone.

If it's Darkest Dungeon and you go bottom you kill 5 people.

If my math is right the odds of it not killing anyone at the bottom is about 23.7%. So if you want to go for potentially zero casualties that's the better option. But of course there's a chance that it might kill more than one person.

        Its not.

Also going off last 2 in the post as the roll, the very first person it hit died in your post. 4 more to go, you monster.

          What's the correct likelyhood then?
Also there' a 75% chance of survival so any number below or equal to 75 as my last two digits means the person survived. My hands are clean for now

Why would rolling a 99 result in a "failure".

            Yes I have DnD autism.

Also your right, bottom is 23%, I am stupid and thought there was 6 people in the bottom track.

as longs as more than one died it means that you failed
by picking the other route you limit fatalities to 1

            Anonymous

The top had an 85% likelyhood of a 100% casualty rate, so on average the top casualty rate would be 85%. I on the other hand only had a 40% casualty rate, more than twice as good. I win.

he's ALWAYS gonna be the one drowning, if he's the one who steps into the teleporter, isnt he?
