I played XC1 and I although I enjoyed the crazy shit near the end I was a little let down by all the hype it had around it. Is Xenogears the same thing or does it deserve the praise?

Disc 2 turns into a fricking visual novel. Which is still an improvement over disc 1, since the gameplay is hot garbage.
give your best explanation of the plot
i'm convinced that none of you homosexuals played it nor understood the basic plot
G Gundam + Space Odyssey + Gnosticism.
Amnesiac kung fu painter gets tangled in a war that israelites are orchestrating. He finds the love of his life, stops a couple incels from destroying the world for different reasons (but the same cause), fix his unthreated schizophrenia and undertated the value of life, all while cool giant robots fight in the background with religious and psychological themes that are actually relevant to the plot and not just for decoration.
Stand tall and shake the heavens.
?si=N9_JT2vOohY-AgVE
>G Gundam
Aside from Kung Fu in a robot it's nothing like G Gundam.
It's more like Macross + Evangelion + Final Fantasy
what? fei's mentor fights gundams while outside the suit
*domon's
There's a lot of parallels with Evangelion even though both were almost at development at the same time, too.
I remember listing a dozen or more back then, even in plot details but I've lost everything to time.
the evangelion parallels are honestly kind of boring to cover anyways
The one thing that stuck with me was one e-girl girl with a bulky dark blue/purple robot which reminded me a lot of Granzon. SRW was already a thing at the time, so maybe it was just a little nod from a designer?
Idk, i feel they are more fruit coincidence and maybe inspiration from the same source (both Anno and Takahashi are nerds at their hearts, same there WAS an ovelap). Its funny that both end up going through different directions just to say a somewhat similar message.
While eva is more about finding self worth to face life, XG is more about finding love to face life. Ironically, both end up giving antiescapist messages both in the third impact and Krellian's apotheosis. Also very funny that both show had messy endings due to extraneous circumstances.
That's a Giant Robo reference actually. The way mario controls Scheibzein with a watch is pretty similar to that manga/show. Just to show Takahashi being a mecha ota.
go away homosexual I'm Going to do double club you with my giant whip dildos
AND I ASK YOU:
CAN WE EASE THE PAIN
OF THOSE WHO LOST?
CAN WE KNOW THE CAUSE
OF ALL THIS SORROW?
CAN WE CATCH THE TEARS
OF A BROKEN WORLD?
FALLING DOWN UPON THE EARTH
FALLING DOWN
[FLUTE]
what is there to understand? someone made a golem, it broke, they send it to a planet, it hacked the ship, ship went down, it made a buch of people so they can be used to repair the golem
i know the plot is weird if you are 12 but if you play the game as a adult and think about what you are reading as you play its not really that hard
ok but explain miang taking control of people, lacan and elly being reborn and all that shit. And what is ramus' purpose, citan, why is fei schizophrenic or whatever mental issue he has?
>explain miang taking control of people, lacan and elly being reborn and all that shit
all of this is explain in the end of the game, second half of disc 2, there is like 50 minutes of cutscenes just talking about fei and his whole being the connector shit
ramus purpose is being a joke
citan whole shit is explain in the end of disc 1 when he is talking with the second fei
>why is fei schizophrenic or whatever mental issue he has
rewatch the 50 minutes fei exposition.
all of this is in the game itself anon, you just need to read the words on your screen
anon pls, I cannot give your essay a 10 like that.
Perchance.
im not writing a essay about a game a played years ago
my point is that everything you are asking is answered in the game itself
I don't remember the game I played 15 years ago
>And what is ramus' purpose
an artificial contact, since they didn't know about fei. he was promptly abandoned afterwards, went mad and tried take fei's place
But why do they need fei to make contact, again? And why do they always kill him? And why is elly always being reincarnated as well?
>But why do they need fei to make contact
no, fei IS the contact. they didn't know where he is, so they said frick it, we'll make one. with blackjack and hookers
just like i don't know where my english is, holy shit
>they didn't know where he was
they probable lost him because of all of the BS the last one did
lol true
homie fricked up so bad even his soul just bailed
but why do they always kill his incarnations? If I remember correctly it's because it was not the right time to make contact, right?
What about elly though?
all i really remember is that fei and elly always found each other
also elly was the antitype or something on that line, though i don't quite remember what that meant
shit i dunno, it's complicated. it's kind of making me want to dig around but i'm pretty sure it's a deep ass rabbit hole
they want fei because he is the only one that can talk to the wave existence who keeps reincarnating him hoping he will help him escape from this wack ass monolith. elly gets reincarnated too because he knows that man has no motivation to work without pussy.
zohar's electric boogalo. no further explanation required.
A highly advanced bio-computer using an ancient alien artifact containing a higher dimensional being as an infinite power source just won a space war and is now set to be decommissioned upon their return to their homeplanet. The bio-computer realizing its impending doom takes control of the ship and crashes it into a nearby planet to avoid its fate. Before the crash a small boy makes contact with the higher dimensional being inside the alien artifact allowing him to be reincarnated over and over because the higher dimensional being can tap into the biogenesis machine and pop him out every time he dies. Everyone dies in the crash, and the bio-computer is heavily damaged. The Bio-computer terraforms the planet and bio-engineers life forms it will eventually use as biomass to repair itself based on the recorded biological data from the inhabitants the ship it crashed. The bio-computer creates a woman to be the mother of the world who watches over the planet and makes sure people develop along the lines it wants. The higher dimensional being reincarnates the boy to serve as her lover but he's killed by the other humans, this happens over and over again throughout history. The story picks up 9999 years later, the bio-computer is about to wake up and harvest the planet and we play the most recent reincarnation of the boy who made contact who after being awakened inadvertently destroys his hometown sending him on a quest of self discovery that will ultimately end with him battling the newly awakened bio-computer, destroying it, and freeing the higher dimensional being from its alien artifact prison.
pretty succinct summary of the plot
yeah that sounds about what i remember
don't really understand why people think you need some sort of extra material or study philosophy to understand the plot
What is the point of reincarnating a boy to serve as her lover?
wave existence is a cool guy
Its his only way to meaningfully interact with the world since he's trapped inside the ancient alien artifact.
Pretty sure the boy touched the computer after the crash, right?
No, Abel's contact came before the Eldridge even set sail.
that's not quite right. the space ship was a colony ship. elly was created to be abel's mommy wife because he was looking for his mother when he made contact with the zohar. miang was created by deus.
Evangelion but good.
Does the game actually have a satisfying conclusion? I can deal with the visual novel part but it always sounds like the story is unfinished in general.
i'd say it absolutely does
i would say yes, at least i was happy with it.
the main story/MC story is finish, they just skip some things in the middle, the end is fine
The only way you could possibly know that the story isn't finished is if you read Perfect Works where it poses a mystery that the game doesn't really cover at all. Hard to explain what I mean without spoiling.
The story is intact mostly, it's the gameplay that got cut. Xenogears has a cut and dry conclusion but it was supposed to have a sequel which never materialized, it instead got a spiritual prequel with xenosaga and had other plot aspects repurposed into the xenoblade games (not really for xenoblade 1/X but for 2/3)
Rip
At least the autism behind these ideas got to do something with them.
Ogre Battle barely got any stuff going on and it had the gall to call the games fifth or seventh chapter of something bigger and they never got to do everything.
Matsuno's works are chronically incomplete, they make Xenogears look like it has extra content.
The ending is great in my opinion.
Great ending, it will leave you completely satisfied.
That is underselling it.
Disc 1 is a JRPG, which has some good moments even if the gameplay gets weaker and weaker as the disc progresses.
Disc 2 speedruns the fricking story that is 3-4 discs long, and goes full VN into a massive endgame gameplay segmented including a fricking insane final dungeon.
Xenoblade is a JRPG that has GOOD gameplay, and has a gameplay system that solves a lott of the core issues with Save or Die type gameplay systems.
Where the core visual/system gimmick of climbing 2 Titans trough out the entire game lends it massive level design advantages. Just a fricking shame its a JRPG, meaning eventually all the systems stops working since Stat mechanics go BRRRR.
Gears is what story heavy JRPGs set out to be, but always bloat into never becoming.
>Xenoblade is a JRPG that has GOOD gameplay
Very debatable.
>including a fricking insane final dungeon.
Insanely shit, did people really like Xenogears' final dungeon?
Is that the one you had to go through twice? And looked like a honeycomb?
Disc 1 final dungeon was really good.
Disc 2 final dungeon do so much weird shit alongside almost being big.
>would you like to go up?
>would you like to go down?
>Disc 2 turns into a fricking visual novel.
I wish. It's more like reading a plot summary.
better know how to equip and maintain your shit by then
The first disc is good...
>Disc 2 turns into a fricking visual novel.
Visual Novels have actual gameplay, and puzzles though.
Disc 2 is literally just a text crawl while the MC sits in a chair.
>Visual Novels have actual gameplay, and puzzles though
What?
>Visual Novels have actual gameplay, and puzzles though.
Those are adventure games like 999 or Yu-No. The visual novels usually only involve choices, but no (or minimal) puzzles or gameplay.
The japs actually do just put everything into the "Adventure" genre, from Myst to Ace Attorney to Clannad, but that's not how people usually divide the genres in the west.
The worst gameplay sections are on disk 2 tho
kislev sewers and babel tower platforming is disc 1
Its the best Visual Novel ever made.
i really enjoy the mystery of wtf fei is and im really happy with how most of much question were answer at some point
but with the amount of hype around mister "deepest best written game of all time" i have to say it was disappointing with the overrall thing, just the fact the most of your party members don't really have a story outside of their chapter is already really disappointing.
but my god did i lose my shit when the priest boy father just jump in with a gun robot and shoot himself on the boss or when they reveal that a integral part of their plan involved throwing a baby in the trash and just pray it would all work out, its hilarious
>but with the amount of hype around mister "deepest best written game of all time" i have to say it was disappointing with the overrall thing
i feel the same way, i enjoyed the worldbuilding and story as a whole but it wasn't THE GREATEST STORY IN GAMING EVER, it was just pretty interesting and pretty good
Actually yeah good question how does Xenogears fit in with Chronicles? Is it all the same universe are indirectly or directly related is one a prequel wtf gives
Xenogears is part V of a "vision" Takahashi had of a series of games consisting of 6 parts. You see and learn about each part in the history of Xenogear's world. Xenosaga is a recreation of part 1.
Chronicles so far are still their own thing but take many, many themes and characters from gears. These include Shevat/Maria being Alcamoth and Melia, Bart being a recreation of Zeke, Tauras the scientist being Tora from 2, God recreating his physical form by synthesizing new beings to recreate itself from (Bionis and Deus), multiple personalities being contained in one body (Fei/Abel and his descendants and Elly, Zanza with Shulk, Meyneth with Fiora, M and N to an extent), reincarnations of people through time (N/Noah in 3), orchestrated war with Keves and Aveh and the futile ongoing war in Xenoblade 3's world, salvaging from the Thames and salvaging in 2.
They're technically unrelated. The simplest way to think about it is like this. The two creators of Xenogears first wrote out a general concept for its universe. That general concept was then adapted into Xenogears, which failed to get a sequel. They then formed their own company and re-adapted that concept as Xenosaga, which also failed but for different reasons. The Xenoblade series is a new adaptation of that original concept.
As a result, they're all technically different, but share a lot of the ideas.
These games have some sort of indirect continuity, but are not really sequel.
Xenosaga (everything) is the spiritual prequel of Xenogears and is considered to be part 1, while gears is part 5.
Ultimately, though, each series is their own series.
After the DLC of XC3 Xenosaga is closely related to Xenoblade but Xenogears isn't. Nintendo still can work with Namco to have kosmos and have some references of saga in it while Square just don't give a frick.
Compared, Xenogears is to XC1 what XC2 is to XC1
I don't know if you mean that in the good or bad way.
?This is a sci-fi game for sci-fi nerds. If you don't like dunc, hyperion, 2001 a space odyssey, gundam, etc then stay away.
If it's crazy shit you want, Xenogears is full of it. The problem is the game doesn't stick the landing at all.
It's the most ambitious game I've ever played and is absolutely worth the recognition it gets.
if your taste is so low that you didn't get XB1 then don't even attempt to play Gears you will get filtered before getting to the first city
>you didn't get XB1
I got it, it's just I don't see why it's praised so highly.
>I don't see why it's praised so highly.
this means you got filtered
No, not really.
It's a fun well-made Fantasy adventure with engaging combat mechanics and a good story with memorable characters?
You'd be surprised how rare those things are in games especially nowadays
True but people call it one of/the best of all time and I don't see it at all. I enjoyed it a lot but its not THAT good.
people in the west like the game because they think its not "japanese" and it doesn't have "fanservice" therefor is a game for "adults"
>people
*tendies
Xenoblade 2 is shit, get over it
what part of that made you think im praising xenoblade 2, the most fanservice anime game in the series, i can't even begin to understand how can you read that and think that is what it meant
another thing, most gamers nowadays aren't insulted by shit like disc 2 - more esoteric and strange ways of storytelling and gameplay get a pass since it's a novel experience now.
its honestly better then disc 1 because like
say, the gameplay is honestly shit
it needs to be played for a decently kino OST
squaresoft pushed the release date. that's why the ending was all jammed in on the last disk with just fmvs. fei is an awesome character
did you know fei's dad put his mind and soul into him before his death?
the ost for this game alone should be considered a masterpiece
Xenogears has inferior gameplay but has the best story of any jRPG ever made
I like the twist where citan tries killing you
Genuine question without any offense. If I dislike the xenoblade games should I even bother with xenogears?
depends what you disliked about xenoblade
The MMORPG parts, the shitty user interface, the million fetch quests without soul.
Oh, Xenogears has nothing of that. It's just a regular JRPG who tried something spicy for the combat instead of just menu browsing.
It had a sort of a combo input for characters when attacking depending on face buttons pressed.
xenogears doesn't have those. the UI is wonky though
yes. way different
just pirate it and see how you like it. it's a grind jrpg
make sure to always spend cash on fuel first
When I played it first the gameplay felt like genuine ludo kino to me, though a tad repetitive, so it surprises me that people are shitting on it.
time to leave the thread I guess
back on the 90s I was watching Gundam and painting 1/100th scale models. my mom got me this game for Xmas. I was lucky
the creators wife doesn't get enough recognition
Saga gets plenty of love, a lot of us want her to come back
I vastly preferred Xenosaga.
my friend Billy will turn you kids into orphans
NO BILLY DON'T!!!!
In a vacuum, Xenosaga has the best worldbuilding, lore, and characters in the series however, it's undermined by a very wonky plot resulting from an even more fricked dev cycle than gears.
Gameplay sucks though, worst of the xeno games, not a fan of hallway simulator level design
I don't want to spend $200 for the I'd weltal...
I think the nu xenogames shouldn't be connected to xenogears. they're not good enough
playing xenogears will ruin xeno for you because youll just notice how much of the series is rehashed from xenogears
only true for xenoblade 2 and 3, the next arc is also detached (inb4 xenosaga rehash)
I only played the beginning 15 years back. I remember the intro was genuine kino with the village being caught in that explosion. I remember that chinese doctor acting really suspiciously. And I remember the waifu that often gets posted in xenogear threads being in the forest in the beginning.
she is the best waifu
She was very rude in the beginning. I'm not that much into le tsundere.
I don't remember her being tsundere at all; in the beginning she just had a mission to fulfill and was stranded or something. Also her unit despises landdwellers, if I remember correctly, she was taught they were inferior or cavemen or something I don't remember.
Also they're at war with you I think
convince me to play xenosaga. Is it worthwhile? Seemed like trash for the 5 or so hours I tried
saga 1 and 2 are boring aside from the worldbuilding and set up in 1, 3 is genuinely great albeit has a lot of stuff jammed into its story because saga was cut short. Depends how much you like Xeno and are willing to sully through 1/2
I can't just go straight to disk 3, right?
Is the story at all related to xenogears? Doesn't seem lik eit
>I can't just go straight to disk 3, right?
no
>Is the story at all related to xenogears? Doesn't seem lik eit
it has a lot of repurposed story elements that were supposed to be xenogears episode 1 (I think xenosaga episodes 4-6 were supposed to cover xenogears episode 2) but nothing discretely connected. Zohar is there but it works differently in saga.
did you guys beat the game and unlock the xenogear?
ultimate voltron
the ending for xenogears is really good. I just wish it wasn't rushed I'd totally would love another 16 hours of gameplay
the ost is so good
post the music where fei finds out he's the bad guy scientist feeding monsters to people
>I never looked at jerky the same way
>I never looked at jerky the same way
Why does the game look so bad, my man?
I think Xenogears is alright but not mind blowing until they plot dump you at the end of disc 1, besides a few foreshadow moments scattered here and there. The plot dump was genuinely interesting and had me excited for the direction the story was going but then you get to disc 2 and the characters sit in a chair and explain what happens while showing you screenshots of the events. If it had a real disc 2 then I think it would have been great but getting the lore bomb and then the game not being able to take advantage of it really sours the experience.
you are eating solent green
i'm replaying it in japanese (1st time in jp), greatest game ever made
it's pretty cool
it makes a lot sense in japanese too (like the first time fei meets grahf for example). i'm glad i started studying it a few years ago
Godspeed, anon. I've been studying in the group for the last 1.5 years, just passed N4 last December. We're all gonna make it brah.
thanks. i hope i can get to n1 at some point. ganbatte
I pretty much game up on JRPGs because I was too brainlet for the convoluted systems but after really enjoying Shadow Hearts I'm open to the genre again.
Is Xenogears a "guide game" or can I just go with the flow? And does it have level scaling so each fight is basically a thicker dildo or is grinding possible/exploration not punished.
Any help appreciated.
You only use it if you get lost
Robots don't level up except for one particular, "weird" character. You must buy new pieces for them, though.
Human characters level up, but the game never forces you to grind. You can also change your party any time you want, the characters who aren't fighting will still receive experience.
Alright thanks for the tip I'll check it out.
Literally the only item you need the whole game is the Ether Doubler, buy 3 in Nisan and you never anything else the whole game.
how the frick do i farm for gold to buy 3 of those. the good encounters give 400 gold
ignore that guy, you can ignore a person who thinks you should grind for 10 hours for a easy game
prety much every non mecha boss fight is a joke so all you need to worry about is the mecha fights, just keep buying upgrades for then as you unluck and you will be fine.
i remember xenogears threads before xcx's announcement/release when it would only be me, another anon with lots of gear images and 3-4 randoms who would post a few times in between. now every thread of gears gets 100 minimum replies
Saga is better
>tfw crazy punchy man
>Xenogears was supposed to be part of a 6-game epic or something like that
>It didn't do well enough
>Takahashi left SE and decided to do his 6-part epic in Xenosaga
>He only made it to 3 games
Will it ever happen? From what I understand, Xenoblade is an entirely new thing and has nothing to do with the plot of Gears/Saga. Does Takahashi ever plan on another attempt at fulfilling his vision? It always sounded so interesting.
I'm not talking about future Xenogears or Xenosaga games. I just mean, does Takahashi ever plan to try and make another 6-game saga? Gears was attempt 1 and Saga was attempt 2. Will there be a third attempt now that the Xeno series seems to be doing well on Switch? Is he going to ever try for his epic again?
Bruh, it was clear the very moment the very first trailer of XC2 showed fricking Zohar core crystals. And then what happened during its last chapters. And then XC3 FR. Whatever comes next, Xenoblade 4 will be a thing and will continue the story, in a way or another.
>does Takahashi ever plan to try and make another 6-game saga
Xenoblade is entering its second trilogy so yes
xenogears got shafted in favor of ff7
xenosaga ep1 didn't do that well, ep2 even less so. namco pulled the plug, either wrap it up next game or gtfo
saga 1 sold 1.25 million which was great for its time, not sure why that wasn't enough for namco
Sales weren't the issue, the issue was that Takahashi planned Xenosaga out thinking he could fit as much story as he did into Xenogears into each game, but that wasn't feasible thanks to improved graphics. The planned story wasn't going to fit into 6 games, so they decided to completely rework the project and use it to train their staff essentially.
Given XB3 seems that Namco got some kind of agreement with Nintendo.
Better question if they ever going remake xenosaga trilogy or port with new stuff.
It's kino.
Don't listen to these plebs. The developer was initially told to end the game when disc 1 was over but felt that it was unsatisfying so made disc 2 with very little time and resources.
Plus a bunch of still wet behind the ears newbie developers.
>game has a 1 hour cinematic opening
refunded
Reminds me of the time me and my friend Chad would play this game in middle school. He had shitty parents so he pratically lived at our house and we played the frick out of this game. He got really into the lore and would browse for hours reading up on the themes and philosophy of the game even though we didnt really understand it. I guess it was just to block out that the fact his home life was shit. Then his dad murdered his mom and he got taken away and put in child protective services. I never saw him again.
Why did Citan let you eat the Onions? Why was he so cool with Ramsus?
Most importantly wtf were gears? Pieces of the main ship? What was omni/xenogear powerup? Why was my homie Id so powerful?
>Why did Citan let you eat the Onions?
wanted to give fei and elly the solarian experience
>Why was he so cool with Ramsus?
they were in jugend together
>Most importantly wtf were gears?
all but the omnigears were slave level gears during zeboim
but what was jugend?
zeboim?
jugend is mentioned in the main story so I don't know why you're confused, a lot of the zeboim stuff is option, go to the lighthouse with fei and emeralda near the end of the game
id is like the wave existence itself. He has no limits. or something.
Citan was the best party member in any rpg. This dude is broken and tries to hide his power level the entire game. Then he gets his sword from his wife he left on a floating city like the Chad he is and breaks the game in half on a whim.
I can't even tell what his True motives were.
i bought this game when it first came out, i didn't even finish, i found it was boring.
it's awful. game has not aged well at all. combat has no depth and disc 2 is literally a visual novel.
>Almost became FF7
Honestly it would be hard to imagine such scenario.
