If you want an in-universe reason: Considering when you acquire them, you're fighting a last stand on Mar Sara after General Duke arrested your entire militia.
They are most likely the criminal elements of Mar Sara that you either made a deal with to reinforce your troops, or otherwise strongarmed into helping you against the Zerg.

Considered Marines are almost universally brainwashed criminals, it's not out there.

My head canon is Raynor tells them "Be deputized, be executed, or be eaten."

            Anonymous

That's basically what I said, except that the Magistrate said it.
As an aside, the mission where you destroy Raynor's base as Kerrigan is probably a good point to consider the Magistrate dead. Makes more sense than him just randomly fricking off from the story like Blizzard had.
That or just make him Horner.

          Anonymous

They're probably more like Raynor's subordinates. Travelling lawmen like in the Wild West going out from outpost to outpost not to maintain order but to act as judges. Dealing with shit like drunkenness and fights that local police handle. Like you have to imagine that there is a very small contingent of Colonial Marines on Mar-Sara and most of them will be posted with Raynor. There isn't like some token squad of Marines just sitting out there in bum-frick mining camp there's going to be local police. The local Marines would be the cavalry that Raynor sends out.

I really can't imagine conventional small-gang criminals existing in this universe given how fricking hard it would be to get anything necessary for survival: food, shelter, tech, bullets. And how easy it would be to wipe them out. The bare-minimum for criminal enterprise would have to have totally reliable supply chains with off-world capacity and massive amounts of equipment like the Sons of Korhal.

            Anonymous

I disagree, the Confederacy and the entire aesthetic/concept of the Terrans means that small time gangs and criminals are all over the place.
There's space pirates, Tarsonis had massive gangs. Marines are canonically resoc criminals.
I feel like the setting would fit for both big and small time gangs. I mean, why would a huge gang have major operations out in the boonies of Mar Sara? Maybe a secret base, but for the most part (if we consider the map as canon) the capital would have its own band of lowlifes on motorcycles, some bigger gangs, and its own mafia like boss. I don't think they'd all take orders form some criminal in Tarsonis, but they might know a guy that knows people from there.

So in general Terran Vultures sound like they'd either be former criminals and thugs Raynor deputized, or they'd be criminals that the Magistrate walked in on with a squad of marines and said "join or die" when the Zerg came knocking on his doorstep.

              Anonymous

Among other things, a small criminal organization cannot run without electricity, fuel, and batteries all of which require a high level of independent infrastructure that no single person or small group could easily afford or maintain. The government has Space Marines with gear that clearly outclasses whatever a gang could maintain and even if stolen is basically impossible to repair. The existence and use of Ghosts demonstrates that the authoritarian government has no problem whatsoever putting down any group that impedes on their authority, which is exactly what a criminal organization is.

The Sons of Korhal are a former government and it's easy to imagine whatever infrastructure and expertise that wasn't nuked could be taken. All the other organizations the Confederacy considers "criminal" are massive governments in of themselves with entire planets under their control.

You're describing some shitty gang in the wild getting around on Vultures. They cannot maintain electricity, fuel, food, bullets, anything necessary to survive. It simply makes no sense that any gang can rise up from nothing.

                Anonymous

Anon, Terran Marine armor is explicitly something that every colonial militia has access to. It's so low tier shit garbage that even criminal organizations have it in abundance.
Now Mar Sara is a backwater, but look at the map in the defense mission. That's an honest to god city that they're trying to evoke, think something like Vegas. There's plenty of ground for a grassroutes criminal organization.

You're also arguing against canon. The Confederacy doesn't give a shit about criminal organizations on their capital world until they learn that they have a level 13 psychic (Nova) under their control, then they wipe them out with a battalion of Terran marines.
There are plenty of organizations and even an effective nation outside of the bounds of the confederacy. There are numeorus corporations that have more power than the confederacy.

In fact, Mengsk's Dominion was a notable departure from the hands off approach that the Confederacy had. Yes the Confederacy nuked planets that tried to leave, yes they were totalitarians, but they also were hated for when they actually refused to use their supreme power to involve themselves in affairs.
Mengsk's rule actually had everything centralized under himself in a true totalitarian dictatorship with himself as Emperor. It wasn't until after he was dethroned and lost his army that he actually had to walk back his control over the corporations in order to rebuild his army. He had to make deals and give away power and that is actually why many terrans lives started going to shit. It's ironic but the lore is that Mengsk was power hungry and prideful, but he was also insanely competent. When he had to give up control of things, was when people's lives started getting worse.

                Starcraft used to be nuanced.

Kerrigan killed Mengsk's family back when Mengsk was a confederate patriot. They did this because his father wanted Korhal to gain independence. Due to this, Mengsk led a rebellion and Korhal got super-nuked.

Kerrigan then spent her life being a test subject (memories wiped post mission) for Zerg porn vids in a confederate lab. Mengsk and the Proto sons of Korhal saved her and she joined up with them. After she helped Mengsk kill the other ghosts that killed his family, she learned she had been involved and cried her eyes out (because she was 120% loyal to mengsk by this point) and felt she owed him a life debt.
That's why she was so gung ho about that Terran mission despite Raynor's complaints. She felt she owed Mengsk for forgiving her and saving her despite the fact that she ruined his life.

In the first few missions in SC1 he and the Magistrate (player) burned down an infested command center. General Duke then arrested and detained Raynor for "destroying a vital confederate outpost". He then gets sprung by Arcturus' men when we complete the next mission after that.

So that makes him an ex-convict.

Terrans in the original campaign were freedom-loving colonials. They hated feds, but they hated the Zerg a little more. Vulture riders weren't military men but bikers and mercs.

        Anonymous

In general the aesthetics of the protoss are absolute trash in SC2.
Out of the 3 factions, I think that SC2 ruined the protoss the most overall. Zerg remained more or less the same after the whole bs with Kerrigan was over an done with by the end of Legacy of the Void, but that expansion fundamentally shat over the protoss lore and society, by removing the Khala, removing their caste system, and making them into fricking californian libshits but in SPESH in all but name.

terran got butchered in SC2 and look like a cartoony warcraft faction instead

            Anonymous

All the factions of SC2 look like cartoony warcraft shit, but Terran lore was more or less kept intact troughout SC2. Zerg lore got fricked with, but the biggest frickery was with the primal zerg and around Kerrigan, whereas the overall swarm still more or less kept it's core character and the more individualistic queens were basically just a new iteration of Cerebrates, that were more mobile and no longer tied to a central controlling intelligence of the overmind. In principle, the swarm still operates as a hostile, invasive legion of alien bugs as they did in SC1.

The protoss got completely shafted by the end of SC2 both aesthetically as well as lorewise.
The unique features of their society, including Khala, their caste system, their tribal distinctions and what not were all erased in favor of the whole gay fricking "diversity is our strenght" bs.

"Primal" zerg and retconning the entire planet of Zerus was really bad. Per the SC1 manual it's a barren ash planet, where the Xel'naga First blessed some resilient parasitic slugs. Species belonging to the zerg army are complete mutants compared to their original forms, in addition to being collected from across the galaxy... WHY were they all on Zerus like some moronic Noah's ark, and why were they already mutated? I'm just spitballing here but I could picture Zerus being home to gigantic tunneling cerebrates (canonically they are just bigger versions of the original zerg slugs). I have no idea why it became a fricking jungle.

There has always been a man in the missile turret. Just as there has always been a missile turret. I’ve lived in this village for 20 years, and the turret on the hill has been there. Watching over us.

When I was young, I asked my father, “Father, why is there a man in the missile turret?” He said, “I don’t know, son, he’s just always been there. He was there when I asked my father the same question, and maybe he was there before that.”

“Does anyone ever talk to him?”

        “Nobody, Son.”

        “Why not?”

        “Because we’re afraid.”

        “Afraid of what?”

“Of the man. And the missiles.”

Well I was not afraid of the man. Not any more. It’s my 20th birthday today, and I’m going to talk to the man. And ask him why he’s always been there. I’m standing on the cliff over looking the village now, and the man and the turret are just 50 feet or so behind me. The wind howls around me. I can almost feel it trying to push me over the cliff, as if warning me. Warning me to stay away, warning me to leave things as they are.

I turn around and walk towards the turret. I yell out for the man, but the wind steals my voice, and I don’t know if he can hear. I hold my hand up above my eyes to shield them from the sun. I cannot make out the man’s features. He must be at least 70 or 80 years old, by now. Maybe older. Nobody in the town remembers a day when he wasn’t there.

Finally, I approach the feet of the turret. As I do, I can hear it whir to life as the turret turns to face me. There is a man in the turret. There has always been a man in the missile turret.

He is as old as I expected him to look. Wrinkled, wizened, balding. He looks down at me. He doesn’t say a word. I don’t say a word either. He just looks down at me, and offers his hand.

I have always been the man in the missile turret.

Left looks more menacing than right
Despite them giving right an angrier expression and spookier angled goggles
Left's eyes stood out more, the larger goggles look more inhuman, the reflections on the mask look creepy, the lack of detail makes him look darker, and the larger rebreathers all combine to make him look like a creepy insect
That's all lost on the right one

Kerrigan was great in Brood War, she was a wild card making plays and backstabbing people all over the place and most importantly she was having a blast while doing it, sort of like Palpatine in the prequels. You can tell both of these characters enjoy being buttholes and that makes them fun, hate how they went the "battered housewife" route with Kerrigan in SC2, much like how they tried to redeem Sylvanas the same way.

            Anonymous

Brood war Kerrigan and Cata era Sylvanas were fun villains. Always thought it was funny how you spend the first two campaigns in BW getting the terran/protoss back on their feet only to tear them down again as Zerg.
The backstab mission where you kill Fenix and Duke was great drama for the time.

              Anonymous

I remember feeling legitimately betrayed by it, especially because you had to do the betrayal. I really liked Fenix and dragoons in general as a kid

          Anonymous

I agree, but I would argue that the poor writing in SC2 did more to ruin her character than the voice acting. She did fine given what she had to work with, but there's only so much you can do with a character who becomes literally Space Jesus

            Anonymous

But the writing was dead by Wings of Liberty, because they had already started writing the characters (kerrigan especially) like comic book villains or at the very least like they were writing for fantasy.

Kerrigan started sounding like "ooooh, I'm so eeeeevil" instead of a pissed of chick going on a power trip from being zerg and in control of the swarm. There was always a smug spiteful energy to her, especially with how petty she was towards Mengsk. Hell even her victory speech in Brood War sounded like she was finally coming down from the high and was basically justifying everything to herself. "y-yea I'll let them go, so I can test their resolve later totally. I didn't just have a moment of sobriety and realize this shit was all pointless. I'M THE QUEEN OF BLADES I WON'D EVER BE HURT AGAIN!
Just listen to her voice when Raynor calls her out for being a murdering psycho. She sounds like a kid being reprimanded and she just bites back "you don't know what you're talking about!"

Then you have Duran, the most fantasy/comic book like villain in the OG and he really comes off more like a madman or fanatical cult leader in the reveal rather than what he would later become. I don't know if I'm quite explaining my thoughts correctly, but there was a distinct shift in tone that changed "how the message was received" even if they had written everything the same way in 2 as they had in Brood War.
Take the Hansin finale for example, if you don't side with her, that ending cutscene was the closest that Wings of Liberty got to feeling like OG Starcraft. The OG was pretty campy at times, but when it wasn't they went all in on the sci fi horror.
Starcraft 2 was a space fantasy.

That first anon is a little mixed up, it wasn't the first trailer bit it was the original version of the Zeratul versus Hydralisks fight cinematic trailer that was originally shown at Blizzcon 2008
Here is the original one with Glynnis Talken Campbell
(Kerrigan has one line all the way at the very end): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqx_a_PaPEk
Here is the much more widely distributed version with Tricia Helfer: https://youtu.be/qsmcBpmr9zQ

I prefer the hag voice. Kerrigan should sound like an evil old witch lady even if she's a permanently young sexy alien babe.

maybe, maybe its just the higher fidelity

whether you prefer the old voice or not is almost irrelevant, because it doesn't fit the totally new characterization of Kerrigan in SC2, so the real question is if you prefer the new characterization - to which the answer is a pretty unanimous "no"

I don't care what anyone at Blizzard says, Kerrigan was black. Frick, you'd think that they would have leaned in on that since they actually had a well written black character who's personality wasn't just "I'm black".

I wasn't here yesterday, but have been saying this for years. Pretty much since SC2 came out.
My only theory is that they didn't want the main antagonist to be a black woman, which when trying to think like someone at Blizzard trying to appease the colored hair mafia, I can understand. So they whitewash her. Then they go and make her not a villain because there was a secreter bigger evil and she was actu... FRICK I hated the writing in SC2.

Raynor is is a crazy guy when you think about it. He's leading a group of convicts and various other morons against two alien races, one of which outnumbers them an insane amount and the other has vastly superior technology. Then he has to worry about a civil war in his own faction AND a freaky ass cult. What a guy.

Keep in mind Protoss tech is mostly created for times in peace, and a lot of tech has to be repurposed for combat. Terran are all about fighting so their tech is mostly focused around murdering their enemies. Also Space is just big enough that it took them awhile to reach other parts where the Zerg and Protoss are having their issues.

gas is way more valuable than minerals and if you're moving to ultraling + defilers terran has probably already researched mines and started producing vultures. and now you're stuck sacrificing control groups of lings just to defuse some mines

Time/APM is the third resource, this is why everything you do at high level must be efficient. This is also the level why you very rarely if ever should really micro, because your APM is almost always better spent macroing, setting up or even just scouting well than doing marginally better in some skirmishes. Of course, there are excuses when its absolutely required, like reaver micro.

A zerg doing well is always going to be able to afford a+moving those goldfish poop control groups of lings across the map, both from minerals, spare larva and APM just to defuse minefields and be a nuisance as it takes more APM to defend effectively against them and it hinders terran positioning too. Not to mention that sometimes you can just sucker punch games when the ling groups just overrun a third or fourth because the terran was careless for a moment.

      >Zerg audio was so souless in SC2. What a disapointment. Actually, sound direction in SC2 was overall pretty bad
Absolutely. A couple of zerglings attacking your wall-in sounded terrifying in BW, like you absolutely can't let them in or you're screwed.
But in SC2 it sounds like somebody's throwing rotten tomatoes at your door. Absolutely limp.

      Anonymous

This. Look at fricking SC1, like the ultralisk. Its sound, its short, impatient, bullish roars tell you everything about its personality and its intended role. It is practically begging you to just sent it to the frontline to facetank an entire army, but it also sounds real, like the believable sounds of a space mammoth would make.

Meanwhile, in SC2 all it does is weird space burping and over-effected shitty SFX. It just sounds stupid and takes you out of the game,

Killing Floor has the same problem, especially the fleshpound. The voice lines in the first game are way more gritty and gnarly in a way, in the sequel there's almost too much production value and the final result feels very generic.

          Anonymous

The word you're looking for is "sovl". A game's potential sovl is inversely proportional to its budget and expectations.

You do make me think: If I was ridiculously rich enough to just form my own dev teams out of thin air, would I seriously have to give them just barely enough funding, push as many hours as I can out of them, and just the right amount of creative freedom to get them to create bangers like the old days?
It feels like the good only comes from limits, like how older kids media actually had really good writing and mature stories/deep concepts because the writers couldn't just have the characters say "frick".

              Anonymous

some budget/cheap moves like using generic assets is awful so you have to strike a balance between restriction and freedom + have a laser focused vision
its also why people love established rules and worldbuilding that makes sense within the context of the story and dislike it when authors go full moron betraying their own writing because of too much creative freedom without focus

            Anonymous

He's S rank on the Korean ladder, though he's more of an S- honestly. The actual S/S+ players slap his shit around.

            Anonymous

Absolutely. He's former pro, but anyone who can move to Korea and hit S rank on their ladder (again, while being 40+ and has a wife and kids) certainly qualifies as high level. He's genuinely better than 95% of players

              Anonymous

damn alright, that i had no idea about. i thought he was just a average skilled player which in turn means nothing in the grand scheme of things of starcraft brood war

There was a time where he was arguably the best starcraft player in North America. He then travelled to Korea with the intent of going pro.
He is no longer the best in North America (top 10, top 20 maybe?) and has no hope of making it in Korean tournaments but he's still a fairly high level player with decades of experience in the game.

The last time I looked at Artosis a Korean-English announcer was backseating him and had to explain to him that Artosis' build order was over a year old and that nobody was playing that way anymore. It means he's been playing bad for over a year and the whole time cried like a baby about it.

Like, I don't know any better obviously. And crying like a b***h over every single thing and being toxic garbage in chat is enough to make me detest the guy. But to actually stream and not be up to date on the tech blaming every loss on everyone but himself? What the frick is wrong with the guy?

Broodwar is asiaticclick for a reason, mechanics trump strategy all the way up to pro level.

        Anonymous

I don't know why they're so insistent on making the Terran tech so Apple-Kosher looking. The original opening to starcraft had a group of pirates looking through some shitty tv screens like you'd see in a recording booth for an old horse race track.
The soldiers form the infamous cold fusion scene all had heavily modified and personalized armor that was obviously not uniform, the kind of getup that gave the impression that it's just barely being held together through modifications, a real scrap heap tech base.

That was the appeal of the Terrans, they had some high tech toys but it was all juryrigged to make it work. Just like how the original colonies were built by cannablizing the colony ships and trying to rebuild the tech base.
For all we knew, Earth Terrans could have been tech equals of the Protoss. Not that it would have mattered.

Yeah same, I absolutely love this kind of shit. I liked that even in the cutscenes, all the marines look completely unique armor wise and have all different decals and stuff

What the frick did you just fricking say about me, you little b***h? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the frick out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fricking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fricker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fricking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fricking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fricking dead, kiddo.

there's a certain sound effect of wood breaking that I remember first hearing in Sim City 2000 during riot disasters that freakin haunts me
I hear it all the time in TV shows and it's all over the Dark Souls series when you roll through some crates or whatever
it's the last one in this video

It's not Red Alert. I know that at least.
AOE2 had huge popularity and stood the test of time, Starcraft won the east though.

I always thought SC1 Zerg were way more terrifying looking than the ones in SC2. They went too hard on the insect like qualities in SC2 (especially with fricking roaches, what a disgrace of a design) and were less fleshy monsters.

      Anonymous

Honestly as a child I used to have night terrors thanks to a few X-Files episodes and one of the DVD menus from one of the (I'm pretty sure) aliens movies witht he weird flesh pods.
So the gooey fleshy aesthetic of the first game was 100% more creepier than the boring bug hive shit of 2.

They messed up by putting more spines and spikes on everything. They're supposed to be apex predators, which, if you look at nature, (ex. sharks, wolves, big cats) they should be sleek killing machines. Spikes are for prey animals, animals that got fricked up all the times and eventually evolved a way to defend themselves. Spiked animals are not hunters. I guess you could argue the zerg evolved spikes as they were needed, but some moron artist at blizzard thought SPIKES = SCARY when it's the opposite.

he's the defacto leader of the android protoss sub-faction
basically the conclave put downloads of the brains of protoss heroes into robots, so its a whole faction of robot protoss
so its a Fenix who eventually renames himself - he doesnt remember Jim or Kerrigan, but he does remember Artanis and Tassadar

From a writing standpoint, it's pretty inoffensive. It's nice to hear Fenix's voice again and Legacy of the Void's biggest achievement is essentially building up 4 extremely distinct subfactions of the Protross very quickly to give the player lots of unit variations to choose from

Starcraft 2's story had a good "end point", which is probably a good thing since Blizzard is a shell of its former self and there's not even a rumor about a "Starcraft 3" on the horizon. We may never get a Starcraft 3. If we do, I would imagine it would be a new story with new characters since the Raynor/Kerrigan/Mengsk/Zeratul story concluded in one way or another in SC2.
