I really can't fathom how much I didn't enjoy this game by the end.

It really fails to be greater than the sum of it's parts.

It's mostly the story, I cannot believe how absolutely garbage the story was. Can someone somehow defend that?

Color me shocked. Still had a blast with the game, actually felt like a capital A Adventure and the extra bosses were great

I completely lost all interest in whatever was happening by the end. None of the plot points felt relevant, there felt like no stakes to anything, and it just felt like nothing made sense.

The studio desperately needs a writer or an editor or something.

I mean, I had high hopes and went into it expecting something great. Instead I got another Eastward situation, which is a beautiful game that ultimately felt pointless

        >Eastward

You know, I just left Monkollywood and was wondering why the frick that even made it into the game. Overall, I'm enjoying it, but the game is spending a lot of time, and dialogue, not actually telling me what's going on. Pacing issues out the ass. Like Greenberg was rushed, New Dam City felt long as hell but spent a lot of time having me try to cook for a guy I had no inerest in, and Monkollywood was brief but seemingly pointless while being bookended by interesting plot points that I'm not convinced the game is going to explain at all. It's also the kind of game where they seem to go out of their way to make you hate everyone. Like am I supposed to be happy to interact with William at all?

Garl came off as a self-insert and I would not be surprised if that was true. They tried to subvert by having a normal third wheel be more relevant than the origin story of 2 gods, ultimately diluting both in the process.

What bothered me the most about that game was the combat. It was far too slow. Beyond that Mitsuda's cameo song absolutely mogged the in-house composers

Which song do you mean specifically? Didn't he do multiple?
In general post your favorite tracks from the game, I probably won't play it from what I heard about the gameplay and story, but music seems promising at least

Just Coral Cascades, as far as I know. You can instantly tell it's his because it's leagues above any song until that point.

The Derelict Factory is also pretty good. And the sky base. I didn't care for any other track, I think. It was either baseline, or tried to copy other game tracks for nostalgia too hard like the mole mining village being comped to Moleville

Garl is like a shitty mary sue version of the same archetype Shinsuke belonged to in Sengoku Youko
Except the authors really didn't understand that you cannot make such a character perfect and always succeeding at everything

this is what killed it for me too. I'm a huge jarpiggay but I gave up on SoS within like 3 hours.
I played through every FFPR game plus 6 other JRPGs this year and had a good time with each of them. but I can't force myself to get halfway through this garbage.

The story goes to shit the moment you meet the alchemist

      The complete opposite for me.

The writing is kind of awkward at times but the adventure (and by that I mean the succesion of events that drive the narrative) were enjoyable, I had fun with the game and I'm glad I played it. It was mostly the writing style which felt kind of amateurish for a game of this scope.
There is no way I expected this game to even touch upon the best ones of the genre.
The biggest problem I have with the plot is how elements that are actively developed throughout are actually the messenger tie-ins, so they get dropped because lmao it was actually a reference all along. That and the fact that they are clearly setting more points for their ambitious "sabotage universe" means that the game was kind of weakened by the end.
But I enjoyed it anyways. A solid 6.5/10 game or 7 even depending on the day (on actual logical reasoneble score and not journo score whereas anything below 9 is a piece of fricking dogshit).
Music was good, graphics were amazing, combat was enjoyable, respected the tropes of the genre. I'd say it was good.

yeah, the Messenger references were largely pretty hamfisted and did a disservice to SoS's own story. The acolytes, the Dweller, and the blue guy just vanishing from the story entirely to go be in The Messenger was ridiculous.

          Anonymous

I get that they wanted to tie in with the messenger, that's cool, but I'm pretty sure they could've at least given the characters and monsters more time in the spotlight instead of dropping them on a moment's notice.
Maybe fighting burgraves when we has a demon and him running away through space time or something because he doesn't want to fight anymore? No? Ok, he just goes through a portal and disappears for the rest of the game. Cool.

The story was pathetic, the combat was simplistic, the only thing it has going for it is the pixel art. Chained Echoes was way better imo.

Yolande was the worst fricking character in this game, I minute In saw her I knew what I was in for and I was not wrong. Not only is she unpleasant to look at but she would not SHUT THE FRICK UP for all of 2 seconds.

Sea of Stars is a fake indie game.
    Source:
    >$1,000,000 confirmed funding received through Kickstarter
    >unknown amount of funding received from their investor/publisher Kowloon Nights (but speculated to be in the multiple millions)
    >unconfirmed amount of funding received through government grants from the government of Canada (likely in the multiple hundreds of thousands)
    >core staff of 27, plus 10 or more outsourced animators
It's a fake indie wearing the indie badge because it markets better than owning up to what they really are and calling the game AA.

I could not tolerate Garl. Why would anyone write such an annoying braindead autistic mouthpiece..

Everything about the game was average expect the pixel art.

The music was even that interesting. It's just such a disappointment.

I felt the same was upon finishing The Messenger, that the game has vastly overstayed it's welcome and that at some point, a creative head should have stepped in and taken the reigns on the project.

The acclaim the studio gets seems unwarranted to me personally.

The only CT like aspect of Sea of Stars was some of the dungeon design and the enemy engagement system. Everything else was from pisspoor wannabe rpgs like golden sun and the dumpster fire that is chrono cross. Even the timing aspect from SMRPG was done wrong

it's a big fairly open-ended JRPG with loads of secrets (especially when you get to TLA), and you're kind of brushing off the puzzles but that level of world interactivity is pretty damn unique among JRPGs
