i remember playing CA and they were super fun even as a casual player, it was relative popular f2p game everyone could run in a browser, wtf happened why did they move it to steam and made into pay to play game which lead to its death, what happened?

The game became way more fun after the freemium elements got removed.
zoomers don't have the patience to git gud and boomers don't have the time to git gud anymore that's what happened to the entire genre.
CA was casual friendly, i really think its something zoomers would enjoy
CA is gay duel is way better but no one even plays it so i uinstalled
duel is brutal, if you are worse you will get sodomized like in no other game, every zoomer will quit after 5minutes match they got shitstomped in.
nah i tried to learn but every boomer just plays ca and not duel
>zoomers don't have the patience to git gud
They do, they just got gud at relevant games
>WAAAAH WHY WONT ANYONE SPENT 10 YEARS PLAYING THE GAME IN ORDER TO LE GIT GUD!?!?
Can you really blame zoomers?
It's not even worth it. After all that time spent you're just good at a niche game only diabetic boomers and nerds play. Better off spending ten years learning something actually useful
yea like spending 10k hours playing gta5 rp servers or practicing controller autoaim bots in modern cod games.
All I'm saying is quake is dead and it ain't worth playing. You just get stomped every game by people who've been playing 20 years.
It'd be like if you wanted to learn how to box but instead of taking lessons or joining a gym, your only option is to just get matched up against Tyson. Then Mike Tyson complains that boxing is dead.
It's moronic.
>You just get stomped every game by people who've been playing 20 years.
And that's not fun for you? How else do you expect to get better?
You don't learn a language by jumping straight to the final lesson.
This is why matchmaking exists and (is supposed to) match you with similarly skilled players
But since arena shooters are so niche now there's not enough population of lower skilled players to match others with, its the fighting game problem to a tee
That's not fun for anyone.
It's frustrating and demoralizing.
Idk if you're baiting or what but
that's not how learning works.
How do RTS games like AOE2 retain a comp scene with people of all skill levels while Quake can't?
I'd argue learning a RTS is much harder than FPS games, and just as stressful at a high level, so why can't arena fps have that same level of dedication to them?
>AOE2 retain a comp scene
they dont, the same 8 guys win every tournament it just has more money thrown into it by boomers who like watching it.
At highest level that's the case for almost any niche game
But AoE still has tons of players in ranked of all skill levels unlike quake. You can match with similarly skilled players in that game at almost any given time. In Quake Live or Champions? Good fricking luck.
Zoomers get filtered by the game because they by and large have dogshit tactics and strategy, and frankly their mechanics are mediocre since they don't know how to dodge or how to use movement to assist their aiming, or how to aim projectile weapons for that matter. It's less about patience (although as with everything, experience helps) and more about lacking fundamentals and refusing/being unable to learn properly, because you get better at the game a lot quicker than the people on here claim (they themselves are also by and large mediocre, with perhaps a couple of exceptions) if you have the right mindset. As a sidenote I'll add that there are several zoomers playing QL, although they stick mostly to 1v1 lg and CA servers.
t. Started playing multiplayer Quake in 2020
>wtf happened why did they move it to steam and made into pay to play game which lead to its death, what happened?
What a braindead post.
The game being death and fp2 browser QL failing to monitize is why it was moved to Steam to prevent from it from completely dissapear. Steam version is the only reason why QL is still somewhat alive and those who dedicate time to it are still enjoying it.
I remember playing a single game of this where I got matched to a player named 'Holo the Wolf' and they chatted '*swishes tail*' every timed they fragged me and I got bodied and I got so mad I never played it again.
btw I love Spice and Wolf he was a chad and I accept his dominance even if I am still mad.
Call of Duty consumed arena shooter audience.
Real life consumed arena shooter audience.
Quake Champions being garbage game splitting player base helped to kill it
lmao, what the frick is the delusional cope?
QL was long death before QC was a thing, if anything QC made people become a bit more interested about Quake revival and try QL as well.
what do you mean by dead? There are plenty of people still playing QL
i dont remember paying for it then again my account is like 15yrs old and its in my library theres a milliioin quake clients all open source just need the asset pak files
People who played browser version got it for free on Steam.
I remember feeling like this was a proper innovation when it was new. I couldn't believe they asked money for it later on. It's up there in my top 100 what were they thinking list.
Pretty sure the original idea was for it to be funded by ads. It turned out a game with like at most 50 players online at any given time could not draw a whole lot of revenue. So they cut their losses. At least they didn't fully pull the plug.
what does it matter whether they pull the plug. the innovation was launching in a browser. if you had a spat with someone you could send a link and duke it out in a few seconds. if they're going to sell it as something you need to launch from desktop, then why you wouldn't just play the originals is beyond me.
quake champions is free, ql /q3 is not, explain that
Champions also sells fanservice skins and you have to buy champions or grind your ass off for them, the typical freemium format. QL never had unlockables or paid cosmetics.
Side note, I don't hate QC but the physics and feel of it seems so off compared to how crisp Live is. Champions always felt off but I can't put my finger on why. Playing Live with PQL ruleset gives you some of the best feeling movement of any FPS ever though so it's a high bar honestly.
Hot opinion coming through, but I think Nightdive should give Q3 the remake treatment they gave to 1/2 where they remaster it and put it on consoles, while updating steam/gog versions for free.
>but what's the point when Live exists
Nothing wrong with a refresh and Live is missing Q3's campaign elements, overall aesthetics, and has weird content omissions. They could take everything they have from Live and the ancient 360's Arena Arcade content (which has maps that were never properly ported to Live btw) and make it the definitive Q3 version. Basically just do what they did for 2 but for a multiplayer game
>polish the models
>include all the maps and modes other versions have
>include CMPA movement as an official option or even get CMPA's content rolled into it
>crossplay and gyro for consoles
>more modifiers and options such as pickup layouts (could choose between 3/Live/Team Arena etc)
>more fun casual modes like freeze tag to attract newbies
>balance the team arena weapons better and include them in more maps
Hell they could even include unlockable skins like Quake Champions has, but in a non-shit game.
All quake modes besides duel were clown fests and I would rather play tf2. Yes I know duel was "boring" and "tryhard" but that what gave it its charm. It was different from everything else. I wasn't even that good but when I was against someone close to equal those matches were so intense.
That's where UT99 and 2k4 shined. All the silly gimmick modes, mods and mutators in UT made Quake look barebones and it was way more fun for team games
But I'd never play UT for duels since the movement is kinda shitty and weapons are super unbalanced in a 1v1 format
I don't get why they put champions on autopilot mode and never took it out of early access, there was serious potential but all the updates for it are super sparse and sad
Public Q3 and QC servers are just made of cocain addict boomers or just bots, probably the last.
I used to btfo everyone online in the Dreamcast days, but those days are long gone.
