I started off disliking it, but somehow the game really warms up on you. Rolling health is also a great mechanic and it's too bad there's only 1 boss that really takes advantage of it. Great game, I liked it more than Chrono Trigger

Trying to get my friend to play this game, I feel like she would really enjoy it. I will say the OST has some really good tracks

Good to read that.
I played it a few months ago and really enjoyed it as well. If there's any game that's good to rip off its Dragon Quest, especially with enemy designs and music that are just as good while having a personality of its own. The things that it does on its own, like the visible encounters and rolling health, are basically home runs! It was a better RPG than I was led to believe, I liked how distinct the characters were in their roles. I wish Paula was a little less overpowered but i'd rather have a game like this be a little too easy than too hard.
It really is one of the most soulful games ever made.
I beat this last week, The gyigas ending shakes the very core of my soul. From when you enter the Membrane to Pokeys Monologue.
Based. EarthBound kicks ass, don't let any contrarian homosexuals tell you otherwise
What's the actual genre?
It's not your standard anime RPG fare, nor is it your fantasy or sci-fi quest, so what do we call it?
It is lowkey sci-fi though. The villain is a cosmic overlord with an army of robots and aliens.
it's closest to sci fi. it's about psychic powers, aliens, and super advanced technology.
It's a Dragon Quest clone.
It's definitely a JRPG, amigo. It just happens to be a JRPG that's a weird pastiche of oldschool Americana from the perspective of a Japanese guy.
Gud thread, OP is not a homosexual.
One of my favorite games. I know it gets said a lot but holy shit the soundtrack really elevates this game. Big band music, dub, 1950s/60s rock, discordant electronic stuff, flamenco, jazz, the staticky interference in the faded AM radio playing in thebackground as you're navigating the desert. Great stuff
It’s the only jrpg I ever liked but I’m looking at Grandia and Skies of Arcadia to check out next
So it’s babby’s first jrpg normie core
I still think of it most as an adventure game though. Because I never played it for the gameplay, I played it just to explore the areas and progress through the story just to see what happens next
>entire game is filled with cults
>game is obsessed with mind control, tons of enemies are being hypnotized in some way
>moonside is a trance state
>poo gets his powers by experiencing literal ego death
>everything about giygas
It's just a quirky game from moment to moment but when you look back it really is densely packed with odd stuff
>it doesn't matter how powerful Giygas is, deep inside he's just a child who misses his mother.
>projecting humanity onto a mighty alien entity that has reasons beyond human comprehension for any and all actions it takes
humans and their selfish whims to try and understand that which is infinitely beyond their comprehension.
what if she had just strangled that awful little thing instead
A funky, weird track that gets played early on that I liked. Didn't need extended to 30 minutes but this is the only version I could find kek
This game had some killer tracks. Let alone for the SNES soundchip
Some nice dub
Has an acid jazz Miles Davis-y feel to it. This game piqued my interest in bass sounds when I was a kid. Picked up the instrument at 15, it's my favorite thing to do now kek
My favorite general boss theme in a game

For me, it's Kraken of the Sea.
I don't like it at all. I think it tends to appeal to pretentious teenagers but those with more sophisticated tastes tend to prefer more classically oriented stuff (which can also be simple).
It's just a shallow quirky experience with jarring aesthetics in many areas.
>those with more sophisticated tastes tend to prefer more classically oriented stuff (which can also be simple)
kek what the frick are you even talking about, you absolute moron
You have no idea what you're talking about, and should never try to articulate a critique of something ever again because you sound like a two-time stroke survivor on the precipice of dementia
I fell off at fourside. Yeah it's quirky and funny but once you get past that it's just a regular jrpg. Then I'm pretty deep into breath of fire 1 right now so maybe i just didn't play earthbound at the right time. Maybe I'll go back to it.
How do you pronounce Giygas?
officially its "geegus" but everyone and their mom says "guy-gus" because it sounds just objectively more threatening
"The geek"
Thank GOD I emulated this so I could fast-forward every time this POS appeared onscreen
I started replaying it recently. It's a lot of fun up until you get past Fourside, then the story and world take a pretty significant dip in quality aside from a few moments later on in the game. Like one Anon said here in one of the last threads, the best part of the game is unfortunately in its suburban areas, which it only spends half of its time in. Also the item management system is absolutely horrendous.
Otherwise overall it's a positive experience.
I started Mother 3 and reached chapter 3. The increased story focus is not bad but I wish it focused on 4 characters like EB instead of a whole town, ironic since a small tight-knit cast of characters is way better for emotional stories usually, whereas when you shift around so much you don't get to know anyone well or develop character dynamics. I like the game so far but when you walk into that one cave in the Sunshine Forest and the Earthbound style song starts playing I realize damn Earthbound is a more fun game from moment to moment. Maybe that will change later
Interesting since for me the game picks up at Fourside. Never liked Twoson or Threed really
Now play Mother 1 and stop. Now you may commence Mother 64 never ever posts
earthbound is fun and knows when to not take itself too seriously.
try mother 3 next or even better...try undertale since it's halloween times.
i'm playing oneshot at the moment and i feel it's cool so far. only an hour into it.
