i suck an incredible amount of ass at this game. how do i improve? i don't really understand how i'm supposed to practice when literally every enemy kills me in 2-3 hits. i can't even make it out of the first mission right now.

Bait the A.I. into chasing you into a safe location, use heavy attacks to stun them, use the block and invest in stamina as much as possible

Just experiment in the first level on weak enemies until you get a feel for the combat and unlock a few new techniques. That's what I did in nioh 1

Ki pulsing or after every combo will allow you to maintain more aggression and overwhelm most human and small enemies. Yokai enemies that don't stagger are all about learning their animations and openings as you would any boss type enemy, until their ki breaks and you can attack relentlessly.
Keep in mind that high stance attacks break enemy ki and guard easily, mid stance enhances your own blocking, and low stance gives you faster chained dodges for maximum movement speed.
Building muscle memory to quickly change stances with flux (a simultaneous stance change and ki pulse ) depending on what part of your moveset you need, is the core of this games combat imo.
Also you should try to be blocking as much as possible, even when you intend to dodge, hold the block button so that if you miss time it, you might still avoid damage by blocking before or after your dodge happens.

      hold block while dodging
learn to ki pulse(the ability to ki pulse while dodging helps a ton)

you can block and dodge at the same time. it's a safety net, use it.

yeah, block and dodge at the same time, ki pulse literally every time and make it muscle memory, sword and spear low stance have way more forgiving side dodges than any other dodge on any other weapon (other than high stance rolling), the game really gets in gear when you get anything with "health gain on amrita absorption" which you can get a constant passive effect from in like, chapter 5 or 7 or something (?). and use yokai abilities, they are more important than the ninjutsu or onmyo magic you can learn, even the first one you get, the spear chuck, does a lotta ki damage and a lotta regular damage. if you can manage to deplete a yokai's ki (using things like kick, high stance attacks, ki discharge) the yokai abilities reduce their max ki by a frick load, also, elemental weaknesses in the game are massive and you can kill some later game/dlc enemies instantly with the right elements, like fire on the slimes

It'll get easier as you earn more skills. A lot of people forget how rough the beginning can be when you have so little abilities and especially when you're a new player who doesn't fully know how combat works.

I would also add, that neither high stance nor active skills get rebounded when hitting guarding enemies (disrupting the attack). Othwerwise, all based takes. Nioh is an incredibly complex game, but feels insanely rewarding once it clicks for you like it did for me. Keep at it, OP. There is beauty to come.

Other than holding block when dodging also block when you're hit. Getting damaged locks you in damage animation so you can't dodge, but you can cancel it wtih blocking, that's how you deal with enemies that have long attack chains. I think yokai stuff also works. Focus on getting all the Ki Flux abilites from the skill tree (I think it was Samurai) first and make Fluxing muscle memory. If you have trouble dealing with the red burst attacks use Feral form, the one that dodges, so even if you miss the counter you'll still physically dodge

How do I find out what minimum stats I need? (So I can plan in advance and not wing it like a moron)

I barely played much of 1 but I know you needed to allocation points in certain stats to unlock magic/jutsu/armor stats

i leveled up everything kinda evenly up until 30/50 and then picked one or two to push up to 150, the respec item is fairly cheap since you use gold to get it and i havent really found anything to use gold for and i finished NG+4

early levels only really matter to get more onmyo/ninjutsu skill points early, so i guess level those after you get base stats for the armor you want to wear

Play kbm if you arent already. Rebind the stance changes to one key each with no modifier (by default its like shift + a key I think) you will be able to understand the flow of the combat much better with that.

get ki pulse in muscle memory ASAP

    everything after that comes naturally

Bad advice. You can train key pulse for the timing, but dont get it to engraved in your muscle memory because later on you get key pulse on stance change, that’s the real key pulse. It’s what you should do every time.

flux is just an extension of regular ki pulse

Its an extension but once you get it you never use regular ki pulse anymore.

Not when you play kbm and rebind stance changes, which is a must.

That sounds really stupid. I don't have this issue using a controller the game was actually designed for.

You ve probably never been able to do more than 30% of what the gameplay is capable of when its not bridled by controller.

There's no objective upside to either control method. Just whatever feels more comfortable to you. Yes kmb can have specific binds that can help make your gameplay feel smoother ( like not having to hold down buttons to access additional functions) but there's nothing specific you can perform that can't be done by someone who is very familiar with the controller setup.

Yeah well my point stands. You dont need to muscle memory the ki pulse button just muscle memory the stance change buttons.

    Nioh 1 or 2?
Nioh 1, just abuse the shit they give you
Nioh 2, same as above but try to get better over time

Nioh 2 is one of the easiest fricking 'hard' games ever. Like if you even use the shit they give you, you will never lose. But youo need to learn what shit is good

And if it is Nioh 2, Enera or the snake?

Another thing that I don't think was mentioned in this thread; yokai abilities - which are very powerful and main part of your moveset - use ANIMA and not KI.
Your Ki regenerates WHILE use yokai abilities. Therefore, when you are fighting/comboing and notice your Ki is low and your about to get fricked, you can still use a yokai ability to maintain pressure and get your Ki back at the same time. Or just use them as a regular combo extender.
The quality of the abilities is highly variable so you should experiment with all of them you find because some are genuinely OP and can carry you when used well.
