Asmodeus did some shit that simultaneously converted all tiefling bloodlines into his own (alleviated somewhat in the Unearthed Arcana) and activated any and all latent potential, making anyone with unexpressed infernal heritage undergo a full metamorphosis
all this being done to make tieflings a core race

      Anonymous

Both incorrect. A Tiefling can be born if someone in a bloodline made a pact with a devil at some point in time, or if they just got unlucky and got born under an evil omen or something. They are not inherently evil nor are they compelled to evil.

The audacity of the thieflings is astounding, just like the druids sheltering and feeding them, you see that little girl trying to steal from them. And they're trying to pull the same tricks on valiant heroes that pass by.
Consider the ramifications if they were left unchecked, and saved, the people of Baldur's Gate would've been economically far worse when a gang of thieving thieflings would be roaming around the streets, so yes, seems like morally valid choice.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Aasimar are not born into the world as a consequence of having Aasimar parents. Their existence is the result of deliberate acts of a higher power and depending on your source, aasimar are actually infertile.

The tieflings you see in that camp were full humans just a few months ago. They come from an AP where a full city gets corrupted by the Hells. That's why they're a full refugee camp with families and shit and not just a band of tieflings that grouped together.

I've never liked tieflings, seeing them as flanderized cambions.
But a whole city turning into lesser demonspawn while retaining most of their humanity? Perfectly normal citizens waking up to find themselves different and kind of scary looking, but without the demonic powers or intent that usually comes with this kind of thing? That kind of story has potential. I like it.

I know this may shock you, but other than aforementioned Drizzt... Drow don't really come to the surface very often. They uhh... they can't fricking see. The sun physically burns them. I don't know if this is still true in 5E. But that's how it was and That's how it's been for a very long time. Drow like Drizzt are exceptionally uncommon and even in his book the only other Drow with his mentality is his mentor whose name I forget.

However if I remember correctly another major issue with their society currently, is their goddess is fricking dead. You'd have to ask someone who plays more why I just know Lolth is currently dead.

And just as a final follow-up to how insane you sound, you sound just like my old forever DM who was a radical leftist and hated good people playing evil races. Like you sound completely fricking delusional it's amazing

I probably keep it classic if I had a drow player . That part doesn't really make sense they live underground they shouldn't be able to live in the sun. Drizzt only got away with it because he lived above ground for so long. But even in his books he really preferred to be underground.

drow aren't blinded by the sun and Lolth is alive. But she's not the only drow god now

Do you happen to know how the pantheon thing got resolved, because I'm genuinely curious and /tg/ is shit now. The last I heard a bunch of gods were dead and no one knew what happened.

                >Drizzt
His first book describes the raids Drow commit on the surface as something Drow generally do. Drizzt had to partake in one of them and during the massacre he saves a child by pretending to kill the kid and mutilate the body, which makes the house drop out of Lolth's favor and starts Some Shit. The surfacers have all the reasons to hate Drow which is why the dual wielding homosexual had to hide his identity quite a lot. If i remember correctly, even the surface people that thought him to be a helpful hermit or a saviour would drop from feeling gratitude to hatred the moment they found out who he is.
Apparently none of this is "canon" anymore. Even the blinding and sunburns, which would be a major game and story changer by itself. The Drow society is interesting because of its extremes and uniqueness same as other races but now it's just gone.

Eilistraee (and Good aligned Drow) predate Drizzt, actually. Drizzt was not a unique concept, he's just the one that became popular.

I meant more they don't generally live on the surface. Their raids were fairly short if I remember correctly.
I'm not coffee today so I'll go grab the stupid book wherever it is and find that part. I do remember it though because I remember it being fairly interesting. Those books in general were very good, my forever DM fricking hated them because it made me want to play a Drow, but Salvatore did a great job.

The Drow as written in the original FR realm routinely raided the surface for slaves and to capture sacrifices for Lolth. This is why Drow were kill on sight to all surfacers, if you saw a Drow alone they were 99% just a scout for the warband about to jump you and your village/farm. The surface races had every reason to hate the Drow, they didn't just chill out in the Underdark and never do anything. And of course at certain points they straight up waged genocidal wars against the Elves and tried to destroy them outright, though generally they lost hard and got driven back underground.

Then that seems like a big enough reason for people to have a lot more prejudice than drow seem to currently get. This isn't "Hey this guy has horns and red skin", it's a coin flip on a "Is this guy going to skin me for fun? Are there more of them around?"

Sure, but then that brings it back to the original point - How can they just walk around? Everybody knows at least the bad stuff about Drow, being a rare sight doesn't seem like it would change things.

That's dumb, because it's not understanding "Drizzt archetype." It's about being a good and decent person coming for the extremely evil and corrupt society. It's about fighting the prejudice and finding a new home and family.

And sure, we had other non-evil drow beside Drizzt. Zaknafein, Liriel Baenre, some small communities of Elistraee followers, but they were few and far between. Giving them whole cities and big communities and being generally accepted kinda kills the thing that makes the Drizzt archetype special. Unless you just want to play a dual-wielding edgy looking elf.

I will say it's kind of interesting though. Drizzt himself is still special - the good drow from the evil drow society. It's the archetype that suffered. Which lets me look at this whole thing as a specific attack against the wave of Drizztgays and that seems kinda funny.

There was a time period when all mention of the words demon and devil were scrubbed out from the rulebooks, and replaced with tanar'ri and baatezu. Same thing, different name. Apparently both of those are now subgroups of demons / devils?

Those are just the fancy names for demons and devils. Probably back then in response to scared soccer moms during the american satanic panic

Yes that. New names for old stuff, which made it superficially look like the "satanic" elements were removed. It's bloody obvious if you actually read the material, but it was enough to fool the pretend oldgay itt.

Tieflings are just people with demonic blood in them. Oftentimes this blood comes with certain DARK URGES that they have to resist, but they're not inherently evil or anything. Great grandma fricked an incubus/grandad fricked a succubus and so they get horns, glowing eyes and weird skin colors.

Wisdom governes anything concerning nature and animals, senses and intuition. And insight, the most OP skill in the game.

Being a tiefling literally just means somewhere in your genetic bloodline, someone pulled some shit. Fricked a devil (tieflings are usually devil tainted but they can be tainted by demons/the abyss instead as well) made a deal with a devil, crossed a devil. Something.

It's essentially a curse on the bloodline that causes people to come out looking a bit horny. They are entirely mortal, live basically as long as humans, and are mostly the same in every way besides things like their racial fire resistance or w/e racial boon your chosen flavor of tiefling gives. They don't ping as evil or desecrated to a paladin and they are in no way innately evil or supernaturally compelled to be evil, Tieflings tending to evil is a result of society just kind of assuming they're all going to turn out bad.

I like when they're lavender and have freckles.

Aberrent mind sorc/bit of warlock flavor that got her powers from an encounter with a weird far realm creature. I don't feel that's overly "unique" or special snowflake given I'm pretty sure a far realm encounter is on the table of presented ideas for how your sorc could have gained their magic, since sorcs are generally magical people rather than people that studied/learned magic like a wizard.

They dont have to. Storm sorcerers get their powers from being influenced by a big elemental storm that raged during birth or childhood. There is no parental lineage involved.

It was Vierna. Honestly Drizzt is a terribly written character, he would've been far more interesting if he actually went along with the evils of his society for a long time before he got exposed to other cultures and ideas and realized the Drow were fricked up. Instead, he's inexplicably Good starting from childhood with no real explanation as to why he is this way other than author fiat. Even Zaknafein being a good man doesn't explain it since he barely interacted with Drizzt growing up, Drizzt just resists and ignores all the evils and temptation of Drow society because.... he just does, okay?!

I just blame it on being written as a prequel. Salvatore first wrote the Icewind Dale trilogy. The Dark Elf trilogy was written afterwards and it was crammed into this

                >at the end of the second book he escapes the Underdark
So there was only one novel depicting his upbringing in a drow society

Also I would have banged Vierna if I were him. I used to think that when I was reading it over 20 years ago and I still think that.

See the thing is in the original Crystal Shard book Drizzt was actually interesting. Originally, he was centuries old, and was implied to have partaken of all the vile and wicked things Drow society had to offer, and had cast it off for a life of solitude in the harshest and most desolate wilderness he could find after he realized the truth of what the Drow were.

Then Drizzt blew up in popularity and he did The Dark Elf trilogy, wherein Drizzt suddenly isn't even a century old when he leaves, never partakes in a SINGLE evil action the entire time he's in Menzoberranzan, from childhood to adulthood, despite having several opportunities and encouragements to do so. I mean Drizzt was practically a capegay character in that trilogy, he wouldn't even kill people who betrayed or were out to kill him unless he had no other choice. The character is just so dumb, he's this paragon of righteousness and compassion with absolutely zero reason for him to be so. You never get any soul searching, any regret, any torment or real character building from Drizzt as a result, since he's just perfectly good all the time since he was born.

                >opportunities and encouragements
I think it's safe you say you're downright required to commit evil in Menzoberranzan, between child sacrifices, slavery, hot incest and whatever else that's going on it's probably not that easy to generally avoid a "Do some fricked up shit or i'll skin you alive you lowly male" kind of a situation.

                Anonymous

Drizzt skates by this too, he should've been sacrificed multiple times but he's not because his mother decides he's so god damned talented with swords (since he's Zaks kid) that he's gonna carry the house in inter house warfare that she keeps intervening and keeping him alive. After he refuses to participate in the orgy or frick his sister, for example, his sister takes him to the spider pits to get thrown in and devoured, but his mother comes in and saves him. So I'll give credit where it's due, at least Salvatore gave an explanation for that part of it. He still never gave any reason why Drizzt is just so magically good and pure though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Drizzt join a pirate crew at some point? Been a while since I've read the books, but I seem to remember something about the pirates being the first group to accept him as he is since they were all outcasts too and what's one more oddball in a murderhobo crew

                >Drizzt's 2 levels in Barbarian were gained by being a paragon of good
You should probably re-read the Dark Elf trilogy. Not as good as the originals, but there's still quite a bit of grit in it.

                Anonymous

The levels he gained in Barbarian were due to his period surviving in the Underdark after he left Menzoberannzan where he was barely surviving in the wilds. Drizzt in the Dark Elf trilogy never commits a SINGLE, SINGULAR, ONE, evil action. At all. The entire time. Because, why? It's the worst part about Drizzt as a character, he never earned being different, he never went through any true moral struggle or any kind of regret and therefore redemption, he just always was good from the moment he was born and magically resisted the influence and power of his incredibly evil society simply because the author says so.

The sad reality is that games like the original BG games aren't financially responsible to make anymore and frankly the /vg/ is a perfect example of why.

Take Pillars of Eternity; Was it flawed? Yes. Was it terrible? No. But you'll see it being dragged over the coals here in /vg/.

    Another example is Solasta:

    >Does it have ugly character models?
    Yes.

    >Does the game have a large campaign with in-depth systems?
    Yes.

    >Is it a real Indie studio working on a shoe string budget?
    Yes.
    >Did they include the option to select 'other' as your gender and allow any voice for any gender, because it takes no time to implement but generates a lot of good free marketing?
    Yes.

But again, you see it being dragged over the coals in this very thread just a page or two ago. With people shitting on this game also boasting that they aren't giving Solasta a dime by pirating it.

I've purchased both and I like both enough to accept there's good in the bad. I purchase many Indie Studio RPG's if I see them pop up simply to support them, even if it's not my type of game. But plenty of people here would rather scorn a game for one feature they don't like, despite liking everything else, and not give them a single dime. And that's why we're at where we are. People need to understand that being too damn critical with your wallet's vote also has consequences. You reap what you sow.

Dude I bought and played Solasta, the game isn't just "ugly character models" it is legit the worst looking characters ever made in a game since maybe NWN, and even that may be better. Aesthetics matter, you don't have to knock them out of the park, but they do have to at least get past the "looks decent' marker. This isn't even going over the fact that the campaign is pretty dull, and that the voice acting and dialogue is outright horrendous, and the story is forgettable at best. The character building is also really bad and bare bones, there's virtually no interesting or fun ways to build a character. The ONLY decent part of Solasta was some of the things they did with the combat, that's it, and it isn't some kind of revolutionary and amazing game even in that regard, it's just decent/good. A 3/10 game at best.

They're all demon spawn. I don't know the exact current canon because I haven't looked in a couple years, but at one point in 5th edition Asmodeus made it so all tieflings alive were instead related to him and thus their souls go to him when they die. I know new tieflings have since been born from other demons that then doesn't happen to, but nearly all tieflings to my knowledge go straight to hell unless otherwise claimed. All else besides, if a Asmodeus-blooded tiefling reproduces it is objectively a bad thing.

      Anonymous

I don't think Asmodean tieflings are necessarily doomed to Hell, he just converted all tieflings to the Asmodean bloodline as a devil loophole to make himself a "racial god" like Gruumsh and ascend. They're not actually bound to him.

The problem this introduced is that breeding with a tiefling always produces a tiefling rather than the bloodline being diluted away

Like I said, been awhile, and I'm open to being wrong or right, but I'm fairly sure I'm not completely off. They're all supposed to be unique as frick with varying shades of evil. But ofcourse Tieflings became the race for homosexuals and trannies so they're all misunderstood and unjustly discriminated upon now.

There is a legitimate concern in new sourcebooks, because those shape the culture of the player base. A player base that's unpleasant to be part of can make an otherwise acceptable TTRPG system into an obnoxious one.

A Player's Guide to the Planes also mentions discrimination being the reason there's barely any good tieflings.

That's three sources who all say tieflings aren't born evil, they all just choose to be that way.

You found the right pages and couldn't be bothered to read them. Just above your crop, under the heading "Self-reliant and Suspicious".

Unless you want to argue that "swindlers, thieves and crime lords" does not equal evil, in which case, frick you.

I think Chaotic Neutral when I think swindlers and thieves ackshually

crime lords, sure, but there aren't going to be many crime lords by definition

I am so tired of the "I'm not evil, I'm CN! TEE HEE" copout. No, you are not fricking Neutral, you are Evil, you hurt or victimize other people for your own selfish gain, that is by definition Evil. I swear CN is the most misused alignment in the game, so many NE and CE characters hide behind it so they can do whatever they want while avoiding the Evil alignment tag, which is why CN characters have such a terrible reputation to this day.

I'd argue that anyone seeking to make a living specifically at the expense of others, like a thief or swindler, would count as evil. Sure, neutral or even good people can end up stealing things, too, if the situation calls for it. Especially chaotic neutrals might have trouble understanding the whole concept of property and end up indefinitely borrowing lots of things. But theft and scamming as a way of life sounds pretty evil to me.

What I consider pretty important here is that theft is a very human kind of crime. Tieflings may end up as evil people, but it's a human kind of evil, not baby-eating demonic evil.

Why the frick would a CN have trouble understanding the concept of property? Chaotic doesn't mean moronic, it just means you value individual concerns over group concerns. In fact I would argue most people in modern Western nations fall under CN more than any other alignment, but because of homosexuals that want to be thieving, murdering buttholes without being Evil always take this alignment, it's become a complete clusterfrick.

I think I phrased that badly. Should've put it the other way around, that if there's a character that doesn't understand the concept of property, they're probably a CN. Not that all CNs are like that.

                Anonymous

A character that doesn't understand the concept of property is either a Kender (and therefore CE) or a literal fricking moron with sub 6 INT, it's not really an alignment question.

I don't fricking understand. I know a lot of you people played DnD, and you still think being a literal demonspawn is GOOD? Read lore even just a little and realize in every at least slightly civilized place those horn-Black folk would be dead the second they show up their ugly heads in public place. Blood from demon-daddy bends them to do evil shit, and if you forget about that - frick you, zoomie.

Tieflings were almost universally evil up until around 4e when they became the new go-to for "I'm a good person, but I'm a discriminated-against outcast because of my race" characters. In 3e it was drow. In 2e it was half-orcs.

Of course, the character trope has now been rendered completely pointless since 5e is such a ridiculous multicultural gay fest now and all racial distinctions and conflicts are verboten, so the obsess with the "I'm so oppressed" character is all the more silly.

It doesn't stop all the homosexuals who play D&D on tabletop from making every single character that exact archetype no matter what race they play, though. Do heroic adventurers who had a good life and simply seek to make the world a better place even exist anymore?

No, 90% of DnD players nowadays all play the same 2-3 modern archetypes:
        >Victim of systemic whatever-ism
        >Cynical burnout with daddy issues
        >Aloof emo who needs their cold heart thawed

Quadroons at the most, though they can also have very far removed origins from their predecessor, or their parents could just be very unlucky or cursed.

tieflings can pop up from anyone who's been touched by Hell/Abyss
maybe granddad fricked a succubus in his youth before marrying grandma
maybe your dad made a deal with a devil
