I tried playing a couple JRPG's (not Final Fantasy) but I just couldn't stomach the writing or the characters despite how good the gameplay is. Is FF7R any better for this? It's basically the same reason why I can't really get into anime, the over the top reactions to everything and the way characters act or talk just makes my skin crawl.

What’s considered normal behavior in the East isn’t in the West and vice-versa. If you can’t stand it then don’t play it.
Ok, so I'm gonna take it from this post that FF7R isn't any different and doesn't break the stereotypes than.
in the east they dont act like that. Its just their media that is like that
FFVII (og and even more so Remake) is pretty anime, so depending on your level of tolerance it might be a dealbreaker.
If you want FF games that lean less into the “anime” aspect then FFs IX, XII, XVI, and Tactics have much more traditional Western Fantasy feel to them.
Also the classics I-VI which are your standard Retro RPG fare
IX is literally fantasy Dragonball I don't think you could pick a more anime FF
For the most part IX has a very “fairy tale” feel to it.While aspects of the story took inspiration from DBZ, you could say the same for XVI taking inspiration from Attack on Titan; the general tone regardless feels like your standard western Fantasy throughout most of it.
If you know you don't like something, why force yourself to play it?
The older FF's are fine for writing as the animations of the characters are primitive and you are left to in your head imagine the tonality of their voices. FFVIIR is literally an anime game. Everything you don't like about JRPGs is front and center. There's a huge dumb moron over-the-top enemy that is obsessed with Cloud and tries to fight him with his bike while laughing maniacally and doing wheelies and shit. It's exactly what you do not like.
>JRPG's
>'s
what jrpgs did you play?
despite its anime roots, FF7 and FF7 remake (and ff in general) never went too deep on anime tropes.
I tried DQ and some of the Tales games. Yes I know those are probably as over the top as it can get, but I was basically going in blind at that point here.
DQ in general is pretty vanilla (and extremely boring to me, specially DQ11) and tales games are usually on the same level as anime games like falcom games, which cant be more anime rooted.
FF in general isnt like this, its one of the reasons why it has hit the west harder. Yeah sure, there are some moments here and there, but in general its very humorous but not just in a japanese way.
7R is not a JRPG, it's an anime movie with quick time events
Square Enix explicitly does not make JRPGs, Square, Squaresoft, and Enix did.
also dont pay attention to
hes just a turn based abortion orphan that see anything remotely action and thinks its not an RPG
you don't like JRPGs. you like action games.
Im currently also playing Yakuza 8 and persona 3, on top of FFVII rebirth demo. So no.
play mother 3 instead
no you don't have to have played earthbound first
why are you here if you don't like anime you fricking loser
Japanese write some of the worst protagonists ever. They believe story, setting, and lore, are more important than characters.
You really won't find much variation in JRPG characters, the most you're going to get is "dark and brooding" or "obnoxiously positive and optimistic".
the story is the worst part of ff7r
you only get a quarter of a game and the writing is terrible compared to the original
>you only get a quarter of a game
Why the frick did they decide to drag this out like they have?
Because they're making a remaking it into an entirely different game from the OG. Even the first game in the later half takes a completely different turn with the story. It's only OG F7 in the sense most of the characters are the same.
you're gonna be in for a bad time if you don't like anime tropes ESPECIALLY with the women in this game. jesse in particular stands out with her constant wiener teasing followed by a tee-hee just kidding ;p
>Is FF7R any better for this?
Frick no. The FF7 DE-make is a total fan-fic tier slog-fest SEQUEL to the 1997 OG FF7, with shitty gameplay, awful pacing, butchered OST and visual style. And it's not even a FINISHED GAME.
Just play the original FF7 and get it over with.
duality of man
ff7 remake is one of the best games I've played, and rebirth is shaping up to be amazing. if you don't like them, your taste is garbage
I played FF7r first, got about halfway through, got bored, went and played FF7 OG for the first time and loved it, watched the remaining playthrough of FF7r and was glad I didnt finish playing it.
FF7 OG mogs the ever living frick out of FF7r.
i play for tifas fat knockers the artists are pretty based for making them that big
JRPGs only have bad writing to you because you aren't thinking in the macro scale and looking for character development and subtext. I'm not even being ironic.
