D2 is GOTY and the remaster is mostly faithful
and great.
Can't say I hate PoE and in some ways it's superior. But it quickly becomes an exercise in needlessly hard combat or steamrolling, and the 20 types of free DLC content shoved into your experience is fricking obnoxious

Someone convince me to stop holding onto old gear in Grim Dawn. It's cooler and has more buffs than everything else I find but the armor rating is so low that I get killed instantly against tougher enemies. This is a problem I have in a lot of ARPGs.
You have an absolute immense stash and shared stash to store things in. Keep shit you like that you can't use anymore as trophies and use higher level shit.

Diablo 2, the remaster is great as well if you can get it cheap. Or pirate, but it sounds like you want multiplayer. Keybindings among other things makes it the best version of the (unmodded) game. But if you want to try mods, just yo ho the original and play one of them. The big ones are usually very active anyway.
people who have played path of exile for a long time will tell you it's in a bad state right now, stale meta, etc, but if you haven't played it before you will absolutely love it because you have no frame of reference for when it was "better" i.e. easier and more loot explosions for dumb casuals, and the "meta" won't be an issue for you because everything is new to you anyway.
diablo 2 is diablo 2. play it if you haven't before. it's great. don't expect a true endgame though because it has very little unless you're a genuine autistic and can stomach farming the exact same boss/route 10,000 in a row.

Boring arpg for a newcomer. Diablo 3, 2 or Torchlight 1 / 2 is fine. Lost Ark is also free, could look into that.
Pirate regular diablo 2 if you just want to finish game and forget about it.
And unfortunately poe is the only "mmo like" arpg.
