I want to make a setting that takes place on a giant spaceship
any ideas /tg/? any sci-fi or science fantasy that explores this concept?

Isn't there a Mutant Crawl Classics adventure that does this?
Orion's Arm is a great setting if your going for "realistic".
I was playing last month a game called Ixion. Its an economy/crisis management game in which you take the control of giant colony-exploration space ship/station, the Tiqqun, that is looking for an new habitable planet for the last remnants of humanity after Earth goes down the toilet, and you have to keep the ship that is falling apart functioning while doing some Star Trek shit looking for a new planet to colonize.
One of the other space ships/station that you find across the game is the Etimenaki, which was built and (mis)managed by the UN, to carry the entire population of earth and some animals/plants to a new planet too, so it is at least some 100 times as big as your ship, which was big enough to be seen in orbit of the moon with a cell phone camera zoom. It basicaly turned into a dystopian space favela, where some of the old elite from earth became the rulling class of the crew where there rest were doing 40k levels of crap to keep the ship running while being indocrinated into a cult or being whipped into doing it.
There is some other details of the setting but I guess it falls into heavy spoilers in the case you want to play the game unless you want it hear about it anyways
FTL in the game setting may or may not be the 40k warp in the sense that it cause time and reality bending shenanigans, can cause dementia and alluciantions, and some other stuff
Personaly I think that the game would be much more interesting if it was played as the Etimenaki rather than the Tiqqun so I hope it will be a future DLC.
Inspirative ideas for you to take a look at:
>Read/watch Red Dwarf. Most of the 6 series of the show take place on the miles-long ship, with a few excursions. The MC wakes up after being sentenced to cryostasis for bringing a cat on-board the notoriously "no pets allowed" ship. The cat, coupled with a nuclear leak whilst MC's in stasis causes the rest of the crew to die and finds he's the last human in existence when he does wake up in 3 million AD. The story is about making a return trip to earth so the MC can go and live with his 3-million-years-later cat on Fiji(?) and retire in peace.
>Play Alien Isolation
Great horror themes and you get an immersive sense of scale for how big a space station can be, but you could just as easily watch the first Alien film if you don't play Vidya.
I guess it depends what theme you want. Cowboy Bebop/F*refly keep it episodic with an overall story running mostly in the background. Things like Red Dwarf keep it light on the surface with surprisingly deep philosophical questions driving the episodes. Alien is pure horror what more is there to say?
Read Aldiss' "non stop." Always wanted to RPG that.
Orphans of the Sky by Heinlein
The Starlost, 1970s Canadian TV series
Many other generation ship stories
At least one episode of Dr. Who, the one with Britain as a city on the back of a giant space whale.
Ringworld game by Chaosium
>Read Aldiss' "non stop." Always wanted to RPG that.
See the very first article of White Dwarf magazine for suggested bits to add to Metamorphosis Alpha.
>science fantasy
There is none, because a work can't maintain a connection to our own science when it also contains fantastic elements.
Is there a Gundam or Babylon 5 book out there?
Gundam doesn't take place on the sides for the most part they are on the white base, which is rather tiny.
Mongoose made a B5 rpg.
There's a Red Dwarf rpg from Deep 7. Metamorphosis Alpha, literally the first sci-fi rpg, takes place on a generational starship.
Rendezvous with Rama is a fairly classic example. Ringworld if you consider a structure many times the size of several planets to still be a spaceship, but it has a lot of stuff dealing with the nature of said megastructure as well as players being horny on main. There's also a recent CRPG called Colony Ship that takes place on a generation ship.
Colony Ship is absolute garbage trash, though. There are hentai princess dating sims with higher production values and more attention paid to their gameplay mechanics.
Play Might and Magic. Its a good series, like a less difficult version of Wizardry, action of first five games takes place on spaceships, the later ones take part on the worlds colonized by them.
I always wanted to do this as the secret truth of a fantasy world. The Firmament holds back the Heavens, and below is the megadungeon of the ships inner workings, degenerated with age and utterly bizzare to nearly all in the current age.

Honestly, if you're going to do anything sci-fi, just spend a year reading KSR's stuff. He does the best of modern authors in research but understands that hard science fiction is a straitjacket.
What kind of game you want to play? The setting is here to serve as dropback and justification to the action.
>Mystery/ Call of Chtullu
The ship has travelled for untold eons, no one truly remember what the strange noise and movement in the lower decks are. But the ship IA still needs brain replacement.
>Horror
Something has boarded the ship.
>Adventure Space fantasy
In the 12th century of the great travel, Sir Bighank of maintenance bay need to bring a package to His Holiness the ship captain.
>SF adventure
Your group wakes up from cryostasis and need to bring back the ship online, but other groups woke up too and may not be friendly.
Knights of Sidonia (maybe still on Netflix) - midtier anime
Blame! - top-tier manga, decent anime movie
Orphans of the Sky - Heinlein novel, quirky and classic sf
Space Station Zero - models agnostic ttg

you're welcome
If you want positive check eldar craftworlds from 40k
If you want negative do a play through of alien isolation
Mandatory reading
Look into Phantasy Star 3.
There was an old TSR game called 'Metamorphosis Alpha' that did this...set on a generation spaceship.
