The thing that always drives me crazy about this is if you can't make the combat mechanically fun at least make it visually fun. Persona 5 and Yakuza 7 figured this out, why can't anyone else
Millions of people enjoy the gameplay mechanics of turn-based RPGs regardless of your personal opinion on them. Dragon Quest 11 sold better than both those games
Except most JRPG stories suck. Black Souls and Xenogears are the 2 exceptions I can think of. Haven't played SMT IV yet, so can't comment on that
What JRPGs try to convey is "comfiness" and fun characters
A game like Dragon Quest requires long-term strategy over multiple battles as you traverse dungeons and your resources slowly deplete. Sure, there's less strategy in a singular battle compared to a SRPG, but that's a dishonest comparison, since SRPGs place more emphasis on singular battles; bare a few exceptions, in games like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics your party will always be healed between maps and have access to shops and other things.
>and your resources slowly deplete
You what now?
I love jrpgs, but let's not pretend that we don't finish them without ever using an elixir because 'well what if I need it for the next boss.'
That's just poor game balancing. There's plenty of games where items are balanced differently due to rarity of limited inventory space. Dragon Quest does this pretty well. If you reach an impasse where you're about to die and decide to reload your game instead of using your elixir, then that's a personal choice. The game still put you near death and forced you to make a decision.
Also, items are not your only resources. HP, MP, money and plenty of other game-specific things can be resources. In some games, time itself is a resource.
idk man, i just say i don't like turn based games and leave it at that, some things i've enjoyed were turn based but i'm more of a first person adventure kind of guy
I really liked DQ11, but the game plays itself. I set the AI for everyone to "Act Wisely" and never had to touch the controller during any fight besides the end bosses. I'd probably have to have full control on harder difficulties, but I was just looking for something exceptionally mindless to play at the time.
runescape 1 was great and you can play it on your nintendo 3ds
runescape 2 was great and you can play a 2006 singleplayer emulator on your nintendo personal computer
runescape 3 is gay because i already beat it
>more actiongay seething
Turnchads keep winning!
First turn, best post
why do i know what this is
Most people do, you're not special
if youre playing dragon quest for the story, i dont know what to tell you. the story is a backdrop for the adventure and fun characters
Yeah DQ11 is a lot of fun, really excited for 3 HD2D
What story? It's Dragon Quest. You collect a bunch of shit then kill a demon lord.

Nobody likes Dragon Quest for the combat.
Then what do people like it for?
The people who bought DQ11 over Yakuza and Highschool homosexual Adventure 5 disagree.
i do. it's good.
wrong
i do
The combat is simple but it's fun.Simplicity can be a good thing. Do you chastise people for playing on swings?
i do
Yea, I kept playing DQ IX way passed the ending because I was having such a bad time with the combat.
Fortune Teller in DQX is what makes me stick with the game aside from the MSQ and gaidens.
I hate the plastic look in this game
why can't they make something like 8 again with the 'dry' textures
Except most JRPG stories suck. Black Souls and Xenogears are the 2 exceptions I can think of. Haven't played SMT IV yet, so can't comment on that

>Black Souls and Xenogears
Shit taste
its the meme slime hehe
Did you mean to post a third person shooter?
People have been playing Chess for 1,400 years. Turn-based games are never going away no matter how much actiongays seethe about them.
Chess involves actual strategy. 4 homies in a row games rarely do
SRPGs are where it's at

Thoughtful and well written post

You have to go back, twittard.
the amount of seething that this genre generates, makes turn *based* one of the best vidya genres
Why do we live rent free inside real time queers' heads? Is it jealously?

its all fun and games til you get to the point where they expect you to grind your ass off
The vast majority of JRPG do not require any grinding whatsoever and people who complain about having to grind are just bad.
stop playing bad jrpgs
RS1 was primitive and sucked massive balls until Minstrel Song improved it tenfold
Agree with 2 and 3 tho
runescape 1 was great and you can play it on your nintendo 3ds
runescape 2 was great and you can play a 2006 singleplayer emulator on your nintendo personal computer
runescape 3 is gay because i already beat it
>I want to tell a story but need some "gamplay" to make it a game and can't be assed designing interesting turn based systems
Undertale has unironically better gameplay than most jrpgs
Its not even funny
lol no
Yes it does
I'd rather play a bullet hell than select the exact same option in a menu for 90% of the game
And you have shit taste
How do they dictate when the outline is drawn?
You're in luck OP, turnbased JRPGs are dying out.
