It’s not even about pixels, but rather just nicely drawn/painted art.
A modern game in the classic style would just be hi-res hand painted backdrops, and well-animated sprites for the characters. The original games were “pixel art” because ALL computer art was at the time. And if anything, mark(?) Ferrari’s art was pretty cutting edge.

If the 1 and 2 remakes, Escape, or Tales of were the first ones you played, you're not a real fan, your opinion is irrelevant. You need to have been there in the 90's.

Zoomers are lazy and have a really short attention span. They want action, explosions and instant gratification. They don't like games where you can get stuck and are forced to think for yourself. They rely on others (or their "smart" phones) to do the thinking for them.

Some of this is true but not entirety. It's true that games nowadays prefer difficulty like in Dark Souls where you can brute force your way through ever challenge rather than play the game where you can get stuck forever.

But there were other issues as well. They lack replayability. In majority of titles your every playthrough will be exactly the same no matter what and there isn't any play a fun challenge runs. Also there wasn't much innovation in the genre over the years. The core gameplay in new pnc adventurers is very similar to the one in Lucas Arts and Sierra games.

Also, the core gameplay has issues. It devolves too often into trying to guess what the game creators wanted you to do in this particular moment. In other games there are multiple solutions to all problems. You encounter enemies in an RPG. You try one strategy, it doesn't work, you try different one, it works a bit better, then you improve the second strategy and win the encounter. In PnC adventures you just have to know and the game doesn't really provide any feedback. Either your solution works or it doesn't.

          Anonymous

          >It devolves too often into trying to guess what the game creators wanted
I actually like that aspect of it, cause it keeps me thinking and makes the payoff all the better if you figured out what you need to do. I wouldn't have nearly as much fun playing a point and click if I didn't get stuck at all.

          >It devolves too often into trying to guess what the game creators wanted you to do in this particular moment.
I'm still annoyed at Deponia Doomsday having a thing you have to pick up by repeatedly ignoring the game acting like it's a generic item you can't pick up. There's a "hint" but it's really hard to pick up on it until you've already solved the puzzle. At least the music puzzle required an option you had from the start. I can't recommend these games to people who aren't already huge fans of the genre because of this shit.

It has actual puzzle like puzzles with buttons, symbols, and numbers and such things.
But it also relies on some degree of detective work from the player where it wants you pay attention to and identify various similarities and or inconsistencies between the various branching paths in order to find out how to access new branching paths.

It's genuinely an extremely cool game. A real point & click adventure.
Just a pro tip. Stay clear away from any potential guides that are commonly bundled with most distributions of the game online. They ruin the experience. Just click on everything, guideless, and you'll have a great time.

      >What could revive this genre anons?
I say the same thing for other "dead" genres like shmup's. They're still being made and they have their audience but if they want to get mainstream appeal they'd need to expand on the core ideas of the genre without just turning into a different genre. The beauty in gaming is that you don't really need to follow genre rules, you're just expected.
So to make point-and-click or traditional adventure games come back they'd need to find interesting ways of addressing the usual things that might drive people away.
You could probably make a more swashbuckling high flying adventure Monkey Island while still keeping the core aspect of talking to people and puzzle solving although I imagine it could be seen as too big a departure from the "formula".

No, graphic adventures were already long dead before streaming was mainstream.
Part of it was unable to make the transition to 3D, part of it was consoles being mainstream (PnC is clunky AF), part of it were other genres being made popular.
But also is that graphic adventures are one hell of a beast to tame, everything had to stick together and being planned beforehand, story, characters, locations, puzzles, everything was in play to make the best thing possible. It's not like other genres where you can get basic systems right and then make modular levels.
They started streamlining games too much, from Syberia that was basically a browser game (puzzles were mostly clicking around). I hate to be that guy, but most narrative adventures grabbed the best parts of graphic adventures, but most of them still aren't as good as the good old school adventures.
BTW the latest Syberia is amazing.

I'm positively suprised over the backlash over this globohomosexual artstyle being revealed for Monkey Island. It's a similar kind of reaction people had to the sonic movie, so negative it pretty much forces the devs to re-evaluate the design. It's good to see that public opinion can work as a form of quality control, 'cause holy shit that style is revolting in every way.

He thinks 'Redditor' is the ultimate slur here despite it being a complete inversion of the sentiment that'd be found there and him being the one deflecting any hand his personal flavor of degeneracy would have had in financial loss. It's funny because he mentions taking the easiest option that feeds into the need for a moral high ground, but is himself oversimplifying a complex situation and disregarding a clear, objective factor that caused many international markets completely wall off the film, cutting off any means of profit in those locations.

MCU has a lot of mediocre or at least OK movies and a few great ones. Very few of them are actual trash. And that is the important bit. You can push mediocre garbage for years, as long as you don't actually produce absolute trash.

I haven't watched them but I think it's the fact that the team actually listened to the fan outcry about the horrid looking design of Sonic, promised to correct it, and followed through sincerely. They got Tyson Hesse involved as well, so they weren't just playing it by ear when they started fixing it up.

The ugly Sonic design (that later got reused for a Chip & Dale movie as a joke, specifically titling him "Ugly Sonic") was changed because of massive fan backlash. It also apparently put the animating companies behind the first movie out of business from the associated crunch, and they got as far as printing off merchandise for the ugly Sonic like masks before the design got changed.

That’s not what happened. What happened was MPC shut down their Vancouver studio because it was cheaper to open up another studio in a different part of the world. Corporate greed killed MPC Vancouver, not crunching on Sonic and Cats, and the shitty Lion King remake but for SOME REASON journos only ever bring up the Sonic crunch although that probably didn’t help

Ron Gilbert should be allowed to make the game he wants to make. He should also get spit-roasted by everyone on the planet for using this art style. If he's dense enough not to realize all the reasons people think the art sucks, that's him and his yes-men's problem.

A lot of people didn't like how CMI looked, but it was undeniably well done art. EMI's character models look like shit but fans moved on. TMI had a nice style but mediocre implementation. Maybe in 5 years people will say RMI's art wasn't that bad, or that the puzzles/music/story are so good you put up with the art.

why is tumbler obsessed with red noses? is it some kind of secret code that I don't understand?

        Anonymous

When you do some lighting on a piece, it's not too uncommon for you to add highlights on the nose, which in certain conditions may make the tip of the nose seem redder than it would be in an evenly lit environment. Some artists began to take this a bit to the extreme, up until a lot of impressionable artists took the wrong lesson and just started painting noses red without rhyme or reason.

        Anonymous

This might be a conspiracy theory of sorts but back in the day 2007ish and onwards there was a guy on conceptart.org who would do tutorials and he'd really amp up the red nose thing. He would later do a bunch of tutorials on youtube that were popular drawing faces that really cranked it. Obviously artists drew red noses before that but i swear it all traces back to that one guy.

or the simple explanation is that when you draw its hard to differentiate the nose from the cheeks but if its a different colour it becomes easy to delineate

Nope, Black Pearl is what was left of the original movie script and concepts for the Monkey Island movie, which also includes Barbosa being Le Chuck and Orlando Bloom's character being Guybrush.
When the movie was cancelled, Disney reused the concepts of it to make Black Pearl.

      I'm thinking that.

I read the blog before he took it down. Out of 100 post that reacted negatively about the artstyle, maybe 2 or three of them came from unhinged people saying that Ron is an awful human being, or that he should kill himself. That isn't the problem, there's always a small percentages of sperg's who are going to do that, this is the goddamn internet after all.

The problem is that this very small minority of posts was cherry picked and used as an example of ALL of the negative response, and Ron's butthurt has made the emotional response to his "internet bullying" a means of being able to disregard all criticism of the artstyle. There's no coincidence that within only hours there was an article on Kotaku talking about how evil the so-called fans of games are, complete with a comment section full of braindead NPC's who did no more research than reading a headline. Ron must have had to deal with negative commentary before, the guy made Thimbleweed Park, after all. The hook here is that he's taking it personally, and now is making it a marketing ploy.

I had already lost respect for Ron, so the biggest casualty for me here was Dominic Armato, who I thought was a pretty chill guy until he started going on full damage control, and making up terms like Retro-Fascist. Guy needs to go back to binge eating flaming hot cheetos at the AZ State fair.

No, that's just the twist ending of MI2 that immediately also shows it's LeChuck's trickery. (all a joke based on how much they cribbed from the original PotC disneyland ride)
They were always adventure stories with humorous elements.

          Anonymous

          You're oversimplifying.
Monkey Island 1 and 2 all have weird seemingly random jokes that fit very well with the twist ending of 2.
And the "LeChuck looks at camera" part was added last minute in case they could do a sequel. It was not Gilbert's original vision. (The twist was also meant to be at the end of the first game)

          TL;DR: Shit is complicated.

That wasn't what he meant and you know it. There is a world of difference between a black character and a token Black person made solely to have one in a work of media. Back then they were just another character, but today they would be a virtue signal.

They weren't obnoxious about it and she certainly didn't feel out of place in a pirates adventure.

Because it is a graphic adventure, not an action game. They added the insults gimmick that also happened to be fun, but Guybrush still had to train in order to be a good sword fighter. I know precisely I've played the game.

I don't think 3D was ever a problem for Broken Sword. Primarily because original 2D games didn't look that outlandish to begin with.

When exactly did western art die? South Park? Beavis & Butthead? At some point "it looks bad on purpose" became the defacto art. Were there earlier examples? Something happened between Snow White and Rick & Morty

You're not even playing a video game, you're just clicking through pages of a story. But you're so incredibly cultured because of it right?

That's like saying puzzle games are just clicking buttons. The genre you are actually describing is popular af in 2022 (walking sims, dating sims)

it’s easy to see and neutral if you don’t want to use animu or clip art that have proportions too realistic, which at the same time makes it best for marketing
it’s not too detailed and is color oriented so as an artist that has some practice it’s just low level effort while still playing it safe for normie consumption, but then again it’s low effort enough that most beginners can replicate it which saturated the industry very quickly once it picked up, in 2010 you were hot shit for using it

      >What's the leftist corporate art style designed for?
      Nobody
there is a surplus of SJW types who all pursued art degrees saturating the market, likewise most corporations are just looking for the lowest bidder for art assets and graphic design so you have a bunch of really really shitty artists getting work for major corporations because they're willing to work for peanuts.

      That's my theory anyway.
