Megas were a mistake, the gimmick only being available to like 5% of all Pokémon at the time and the fact that you had to give up a held item meant that the worse Megas were never used and have made Pokémon worse in the long term bc they seem to be afraid of giving Pokémon with Megas actual evolutions.

That was already addressed under the cope section. Megas didn't limit the dex or prevent those pokemon from getting new evos. I won't speak on the story issues since I've never cared for any pokemon story.
calling it cope doesn't stop it from being an issue. objectively, if time was being wasted designing and implementing megas there were less resources allocated to filling out the dex - clearly evidenced by the dearth of new mons added in gen 6, and evidently they have prevented mons from getting evos because even ignoring the obvious 'final form' subtext, they haven't touched a single mon that got one in ten years and counting. would be happy to be proven wrong but so far i've only been proven right. in regards to the story, i've always cared and it pissed me off.

in the case of XY, both - the story is stupid but it's clear megas draw too much focus from the plot for it to land, the way they're shoehorned into everything does a huge disservice to any attempt at a compelling narrative; in the case of ORAS it is absolutely because of megas - there was a baseline story from another game that was butchered to shove them into every major scene and transform every last bit of background lore into an embarrassing wankfest for them. borderline infuriating to play through the game as a fan of the original.

What happened is you made ridiculous claims, I explained how they make no sense, and then you started talking about the story like I didn't already admit that I don't give a shit about it. It's just as bad as any other games. I don't need concrete evidence to disparage schizo conspiracies.

Not how modern game development works, people have specific roles. The game designers would have been given the most freedom to do something else that might not involve introducing more new pokemon, as they decide what concepts are going into the game for everyone else to work with. If someone on the pokemon design team wasn't drawing up ideas for megas then the only thing they would realistically be assigned is coming up with pokemon designs for some other purpose be it more regular pokemon or more gimmick forms, so unless the game designers came up with a different form gimmick then those designs most likely would have been regular new pokemon. The battle system programmers would still be tasked with adding/changing other things like more new moves or field effects if they weren't working on adding checks for if a pokemon 1 had a mega 2 was holding its respective mega stone 3 had not previously mega evolved that battle and also that no other pokemon on the team had already done so, then implementing the button showing up when those conditions are met and the actual form change in response to the button being hit. That's all relatively simple stuff to add so we likely wouldn't get anything too groundbreaking out of them putting that effort elsewhere, but xy had some little things like the breakable background objects that give you items and inverse battles that they could have expanded/improved. While not necessarily contributing to adding more new pokemon, the biggest weakness of xy's plot was trying to incorporate too many things and not delivering on them so the writing team not needing to incorporate the mystery of mega evolution would have given them room to tie the rest together better or at least add something about zygarde so there was something to learn about the cool secret thing you stumbled upon at the end as a reward for finding and catching it.

if I had to choose between megas coming back and box legendaries coming back for the nth time I'd pick megas though. At least it would be something different.
i hated this stupid fricking gimmick and i've never been happier to see something ditched. all they did was limit the number of new mons in the regional dex, get in the way of actual evolutions for mons that needed them, and ruin the stories of two games - one of which was a remake that got fricking gutted for their sake. actual cancer that would have killed the series if they stuck with it.
