Learn with pads and percussion, pads are very easy and percussion is stuff like drums/snares where you have it repeat a bunch for a cool effect. Then when you are getting better add a small lead to what you make. ARPs is what I used when I wanted to start getting more serious about music production. ARPs are basically Pads with more texture so it sounds like more or going on with less effort. I have thought about making an ebook for music production, but I still consider myself a intermediate with my knowledge.

Your game doesn't to have music, but if you want it, either find a musician and comission him to work on the music for your game or use royalty free music.
Royalty free gets a bad rep, some of it is actually pretty good
I imagine if you spent maybe 20 or so hours listening through the hundreds of hours of it or clipping and pasting the parts you ike, you could make a pretty decent OST without any musical knowledge at all.
It would probably be better to just find some you like and hire that artist.
