If i have never played the sims before, and wanted a good version to start with, which would it be? do i go straight for 1, or is this the kind of franchise where a specific iteration is a massive improvement over the original that leaves it totally obsolete?

Sims 1 is charming but broken. You'll have a smoother and better experience playing Sims 2. I personally prefer 3 but its not retro.
there are a lot of things to do in 1 but the game play in 2 has more substance
The Sims 1 is very strict when it comes to Sims needs decreasing. There's basically no down time when it comes to them or their jobs/skills/friendmaking requirements.
The Sims 2 made it a lot more relaxed while also bringing it into 3D. It's personally the one I recommend these days.
Depends on what experience you're after. I have a lot of nostalgia for Sims 1, so of couse I'd recommend that, but it's limited to the sequels in building and what you can do with the characters.
Sims 1 is only fun with cheats.
Sims 2 is only fun with mods and cc.
that's pretty much the general advice for the entire saga
Anyone have any opinions on console /vr/ Sims?
They're fun. The gimmick with adding a story mode to The Sims was an interesting one.
Translation:.
>I played this as a kid 15 years ago and I vaguely remember them but I still recommend the game as if I played it 2 days ago
well yeah, there really is no reason to play console sims nowadays and even then they were already just novelties
I liked the GBA games
Bustin' Out and the Urbz on the GBA are great.
Amen brother.
Play the Urbz and Bustin Out but skip all the other GBA sims games.
Sims 1 / Bustin Out on PS2 are fun as well but that version of the Urbz kind of sucks.
Sims 1 on PC needs dgvoodoo2 (it translates old ass DirectX calls to modern directx) to work on Windows 10 / 11 but it works flawlessly once you get it set up. You can chain it with dxvk / wine and play it on mac / windows / linux too.
Dont play the Urbz, OP. gays are giving their opinions ITT based on their childhood memories (this is actually a big problem on /vr/). The Urbz is a shitty game thats only fun when you're like 9 year old.
It is worth playing for an hour or two to see a weird direction the series took.
I loved the port of PS2 and the GBA version of Bustin' Out. Both are fantastic. I would argue that the PS2 port was better than the PC version before expansions.
i mean wasnt bustin out a subject of envy for pc gamers? sims 2 didnt actually come out yet and bustin out looked amazing with all those fancy 3D graphics, something pc players had to cope with and their outdated looking sims 1 which was 2D
The Sims 1 on PS2 was also fully 3D. It had less objects, wallpapers, floors, and was limited to one story house but the story mode was worth it.
2 and 3 are the only ones worth playing. each has stuff the other is lacking.
Those games are fun but you'll get to a certain point where you're spending time helping your Sim gain skills and friends that you'll step back and realize this time would spent better elsewhere.
1 is far too strict with sim care. Nearly impossible to play with more than a single Sim in your house unless you fully understand its very busted mechanics.
Sims 2 eases up on the strictness and is generally an overall better experience. Sims 2 is also apparently very ass to get running on modern hardware.
Sims 3 isn't better or worse than 2, just different in a lot of ways.
Anything after isn't worth talking about, even if they were retro.
I never played the console games so I can't speak on those.
>but you'll get to a certain point where you're spending time helping your Sim gain skills and friends that you'll step back and realize this time would spent better elsewhere.
Anon... that's vidya in general.
Sims 3 is worse than 2 because the sims are all butt ugly even with cc
Get Deluxe Edition with the Livin' Large expansion. Makin' Magic ruins the game imo
makin magic is only way to age up your children
>having children
go for 1 if you want a challenge, the rest are just baby easy but still fun
People said this in the last two threads
>1 is really hard
>Your needs constantly drain
>Have 4 roomies
I'm having a comfy time with only one sim, granted I'm only lvl4 in the IT path but it's no where near as bad as people make out lol, I think people are doing things in the wrong order or something.
Regarding the game itself, if you don't have nostalgia for it (build music in 1 will never be beat), I'd skip straight to two. It's good but it's a bit boring and Sims 2 just adds a lot more shit to do.
I always re-create Doug's caravan from Bustin' Out
What are the sexiest mods for 2?
default replacements because it's criminal for a man to wear shorts that has belt over his rib cage
I don't think there's any way to get the first game in 2022
It's abandonware bruh, just grab it off of archive.org.
