I can't remember who it was, but the Custodes the story was following was able to cloak his presence so that people wouldn't notice him moving around. What exactly else were they gonna do? Titus' bizarre resistance to Warpfrickery is a core aspect of his character and makes Chaos a perfect enemy for him. And I'm sorry but 'nids are too boring and one-note to be the main antagonist of anything.

That's actually been expanded on already. That Inquisitor was a radical who tortured numerous supposedly 'traitor' Astartes and kept them in stasis, but was himself killed while Titus and many others were kelt asleep. Another Inquisitor found them and, rather than wasting the potential resources, enlisted them all in the Deathwatch. Titus himself was actually pretty broken up about it since he thought his Chapter had left him behind, when in reality they just couldn't find him nd Calgar had been stonewalled by the old Inquisitor.
Eventually Titus and his squad ended up fighting Nids on thr same planet the Ultramarines were, but the squad got wiped out by a Carnifex and Titus got hadly injured. The Ultras were able to find him in time to recover him, which if I remember right is when he got turned into a Primaris in order to save his life. At that point he re-integrated with the Chapter and was given back a position of power.
There was some kind of leak with some content related to Titus. It also included how he got his rank, even noting that Leandros is the reason Titus' previous commander was killed.

They only make 1 per year. Now, men are expendable in growing a population, they shoot their shot and that's all that is required. With females, they are the primary baby makers and more important since they can only make one child per year. Would it not make sense to keep genetically pure girls to birth more genetically pure generations rather than risking a 1/1000 procedure to get one custodes from it?

That Inquisitor was a radical who tortured numerous supposedly 'traitor' Astartes and kept them in stasis, but was himself killed while Titus and many others were kelt asleep. Another Inquisitor found them and, rather than wasting the potential resources, enlisted them all in the Deathwatch. Titus himself was actually pretty broken up about it since he thought his Chapter had left him behind, when in reality they just couldn't find him nd Calgar had been stonewalled by the old Inquisitor.
Eventually Titus and his squad ended up fighting Nids on thr same planet the Ultramarines were, but the squad got wiped out by a Carnifex and Titus got hadly injured. The Ultras were able to find him in time to recover him, which if I remember right is when he got turned into a Primaris in order to save his life. At that point he re-integrated with the Chapter and was given back a position of power.

I saw a good argument why female custodes would be a logistical nightmare in the lore:
In the lore, Custodes are made from the freshest stock of the terran nobility from childhood. Except, since the emperor is on the throne, they need to fricking go crazy with the process since out of a thousand different recruits only one would ever become a custode, the rest die. They only make 1 per year. Now, men are expendable in growing a population, they shoot their shot and that's all that is required. With females, they are the primary baby makers and more important since they can only make one child per year. Would it not make sense to keep genetically pure girls to birth more genetically pure generations rather than risking a 1/1000 procedure to get one custodes from it?

It's partially nu-lore (But not so new) where custodes were being made for the past 9000 years by someone (I forget who they are) who knows the process exists but not how to perfect it at all. Under the emperor, 50 custodes per year were being made, after the heresy and when this started, only 1 per year were made.
Wut. Where are you getting your information that there is only a .1% success rate and they can only make 1 a year? If anything there is no attrition in custodes creation because it’s such an advanced process done personally by the emperor.
