    It would just get pirated

      Anonymous

They are already getting pirated, out of the simple fact that it provides a superior experience compared to the ONLY system they're available, for free. Not to mention thanks to Nintendo's lack of interest in game preservation, emulation is often the ONLY way to even play most of their older stuff.

      And that's not all:
just about every single study made in the past 10 years have proven that piracy does not harm the sales. On the contrary: in many cases, it has HELPED the sales, because of the word of mouth recommendations.

The sole reason why anime became big in the West was all thanks to western fan-subbers, from the 1980s to 2010s. Same applies to countless Ninty games; hell, the first Final Fantasy game Europe got was FF7, and Europoors had to wait until NDS port of Chrono Trigger to even play it legally.

nintendo only sells well because its in its own isolated environment where the games cant be compared to the rest of the market by the target audience
the moment a nintendo managed studio steps out of nintendo's exclusivity bubble, this happens.

      Anonymous

      >nintendo exclusivity bubble
I thought so too but with the rise of handhelds and indie games there will be direct competition of indie games on steam deck.
So might as well open nintendo games to other platforms
      They would still make BILLIONS

        Anonymous

The problem for Nintendo is that making billions wouldn't really help them if it strengthened the hand of Microsoft which is a trillion dollar company currently.
So I agree Nintendo should support the Steam Deck, SteamOS, and gaming on Linux more generally.
Getting more users to switch to the platform.

Users who run Linux aren't buying Windows, aren't buying Microsoft subscription services, and aren't funding the biggest threat to Nintendo.
It might only earn Nintendo hundreds of millions initially instead of billions, but it may take away billions in what had been guaranteed revenue from Microsoft.
Which would be billions Microsoft wouldn't have available to throw away converting every other developer into a Microsoft-only shop in the future.

Little Town Hero just sucked. Which was disappointing because I wanted to like it while playing it, but holy frick it's aggressively shit.
They didn't even make the "rival you like to hate" character right. I hated him, but mostly because he was obnoxious and held the plot up for literally no reason at times. At one point you have to fight him literally 3 times in a row, and all three fights are completely unchanged. And the entire point of the fight is to get an answer to a question you asked. He's not the one answering it, he just refuses to let that person answer your question until you have several fights.
Also the combat was boring as shit, partly because boss fights dragged on for way too damn long. Also sidequests were both missable and weren't really worth it IIRC. And I'm pretty sure the fast travel option in the menu literally didn't function because I could never get it to do anything the entire time I played(I stopped after the skeleton boss took me a fricking hour).

The only good part of the game was the green hair chick who looked like she could crush watermelons with her thighs god damn.

      Anonymous

Little Town Hero is an ass game, but you're still correct on that. 96% of Nintendo's modern catalogue would be instantly treated/rated how they are if they were multi-platform(and especially without a Nintendo-logo/branding on them), that being mediocre to average. No-one would pretending Kirby is anything but a C-tier mediocre platformer franchise for children if it was non Nintendo-exclusive, just for a good example.

How exactly is nintendo selling the switch at a loss? They have the reputation of being THE game company that everyone knows with a fanbase that consists out of children and manchildren that dont bother to question any of their disgusting practices. Forcing their customers to buy their consoles to be able to play any of their games is a business move that worked for decades now. If anything they should double down on their anti-consumer strategies because their competition didnt create any insentive at all to buy their new consoles which is why at the moment you can practically play any new game that comes out as long as you have a pc and a switch. If sony and microsoft keep fricking up like this nintendo might be the only company that still produces consoles in the future which is a monopoly they could only run as long they have good exclusive titles

          Anonymous

They aren't. The idea consoles are sold for a big loss is a myth. The console you buy from a store was incredibly cheap for the company to produce and sell to you.
The expensive part is the start-up costs for a system produced in bulk quantities is high, which is why PCs are generally produced in smaller batches with off-the-shelf hardware.
That is the cheapest style of system to produce even if each individual unit is more expensive.

It is also far less expensive now to spin up bulk production than it was in the past. In a previous era you would have had to secure a contract with a vendor like IBM for a custom CPU, and Nvidia for a custom GPU, but now you can just buy a semi-custom chip using standard designs for the CPU and GPU which is much cheaper and easier.

They would at first, but it's a lot less security for them down the line because them going for multiplat releases means they're depending mostly on software sales rather than hardware+software sales like they are now. If they even so much as release one first-party game to PC, they're going to immediately get a big hit to their hardware sales because people will potentially skip out and wait for PC releases. You could argue that their software sales could easily profit more than hardware and exclusive software combined, but to them that's about the same as telling them that piracy helps them with marketing and sales.

I think the packaging is more discrete now after the complaints, and with 100k being sent out every week I think there would be way more complaints if that was still happening at the level you suggest.
That's still nowhere near a 'console' production volume, but they might be able to start supplying retail stores for the holidays if they can ramp up some more.

Unlike in the past I could see it happening. Nintendo's old-guard console guys did after all finally concede that it didn't make sense to sell a console, and allowed the company to shift to handheld-only, not just that a handheld that at least initially came with off-the-shelf hardware.
I just can't see them supporting Windows as long as they see Microsoft as their competition. This is after all the company that ensured their systems didn't support any media codec that would require a payment to Sony.
