I legitimately do like the meta aspect of the plot for the most part and the more anime esque character moments and emphasis on cuteness with the girls. But the fricking pacing. At a certain point it feels like they're just fricking with you and trying to piss you off. That whole segment of the game from entering Costa del Sol to getting out of corel is so fricking badly paced. Not just because of the minigames, but the simple map and story design just drag on and on, and then they throw about 20 fricking minigames at you on top of it. That whole segment should have taken an hour, instead it took me close to 10. Like, holy shit.

They could have done a 1:1 remake or gone with a full blown sequel that doesn't replace the original like the ending of remake hinted, but now they're just stringing players along and cutting out anything that could bump their age rating (like the stab or Cloud attacking Aerith at the temple of the ancients) and making a mockery of the original game for money. They've flat out said that they aren't changing anything that would interfere with Advent Children's plot, so that means that nothing important is actually happening. They just want to make you think they're changing things without actually changing things, but its creating a much weaker story and product overall.

Cloud was a country bumkin who wanted to be SOLDIER but washed out. By contrast Zack is a country bumkin who succeeded at everything Cloud wanted to do. Cloud left home to be like Sephiroth but Zack was also everything Cloud wanted to be. Zack was a good man but his purpose was to be someone for Cloud to model himself after. But because of his lack of understanding of who he was he couldn't get the details right and the instead of attracting the girl he wanted to attract, he just ended up pushing her away. Until he could break away from that and be his own man. Crisis Core was a mess but Zack is a likable guy and I can see why fans latched onto him.

BUT they could have tried finding a middle ground and instead of batshit insane kh tier multiverse fanfiction introduce more subtle changes to the story like re4 remake did.

Couple the kneejerk response in making the sequels more open with rushed development and the result was the Lightning Returns dog.

Xenoblade 2 and 3 scale up great when emulated thanks to the art style. I disagree about the graphics. Remake having really bad textures is a well-known meme at this point. Square is known for putting a lot of effort into cinematics but outside of that how the game looks is a matter of art style and the engine. FFXV looked good thanks to the custom engine and hiring a bunch of teams to make assets from photo capture technology and that world was cobbled together in a few years. The issue of the story and combat are different matters though.

Cloud's entire arc is him discovering his own identity while fighting off Seph's influence and claims that he's a mere clone

The idea was that Cloud was an unreliable narrator. JRPGs didn't really have this back in the 90s. So when Cloud gave his story in Kalm, it was okay to believe him even if it made no sense. And yes it made no sense. Cloud acknowledges there are plotholes in his own story. And Tifa gets dodgy whenever Nibelheim is brought up. To the point of denying she ever knew a Zack Fair when you get to Gongaga. It's supposed to build distrust in Cloud. It's one thing for a party member to be a traitor (this probably hit harder in Japan since traditionally Moogles are always helpful) but what if the main character were a traitor? And for as much as Sephiroth's account is wrong, it makes more sense than Cloud's account. To the point I still see dipshits claiming Cloud was manufactured by Hojo and he's just a clone that became self aware even in fricking 2024. Zack isn't important on his own in FF7. But he does need to exist to explain how Cloud and Tifa could be in the same place yet have wildly different accounts of the same event.

No sales number announcement at all
FOUR YEARS of development time, large advertising budget
Not a ton of new porn
Not a single new Tifa doujinshi announced, because japs do not care
Outsold by D-list franchises such as Pikmin and Baulder's Gate
130 hours of poorly paced gameplay later and you still dont get access to your full party 🙂

I think sales gayotry sucks, but to pretend that final fantasy 7 rebirth sales being quite low so far isn't news is silly.

That may be so, but It shows the general apathy surrounding this game. We'll see if it has legs in the weeks to come though.
No I determine whether or not it is shit based on the content, by that I mean only telling maybe HALF of the original story in two games, with a ton of bloat and sanitization in the main plot being the big ones. I just use sales figures to help the effort of telling people this game is dogshit and no amount of paid reviews will fix that

I think they're just outsourced somewhere, but yeah I agree with you. This was a problem in part 1 as well.

when they're given this kind of ESG money are they told verbatim that they're to make every character and NPC as insufferable, forgettable, and unlikable as possible?
like i get they're doing nothing but scamming and ruining video game companies but there has to be something else stopping people from making these characters even the least bit tolerable. maybe i'm just ignorant to the way things run behind the scenes, but i am completely and utterly convinced that they're told to just make bad characters or else.
to be honest i wouldn't, why ? because life is short, at least i would've wanted to leave behind a game that people would love instead of remembering me as the piece of garbage who destroyed an iconic game

Sucks we have to wait another 4 years for part 3. I'll be almost 40 by the time this remake finishes and i was 25 when it was revealed at e3.
