I don't care that it's hard, what matters is that it's basically just a shitty romhack of SMB

are all mega mans romhacks of each other? super c is a romhack of contra? tmnt 2 and 3?

mega man added new features and mechanics each sequel

I kind of agree with OP, this game just feels like some rom hack using all the original game assets but making it harder. It's boring.

This. The only reason people hate SMB2J is because they've been conditioned to. It's a much better game mechanically than that SMB2U garbage, and the "muh derivative!!" argument is bunk when Capcom shat out 5 new Mega Man level packs with a couple months of dev time each and morons ate it up

False. People thought those sequels were lame back then too and accordingly sold worse with each entry after MM3. The series wasn't big until youtubers shilled into back into existence and convinced zoomers that Mega Man/Castlevania were these massive franchises.

That's because the SNES was already out zoom zoom.

Disingenuous. All of these are significantly more different from their prequels compared to SMB2J. For the love of god, Nintendo didn't even change the music barring exactly one track.

It was never likely to happen.
This game's development was spun out from the development of the arcade version of Super Mario Bros. called VS. Super Mario Bros. (which was originally called Mario's Adventure).

Miyamoto thought the arcade version of the game should be a bit harder due to the nature of being a pay-to-play game and arcade games in general being harder.
So he and the rest of the SMB1 team sat down to design a few new levels and tweaks for the arcade game.

However, Miyamoto and the rest ended up having a huge amount of fun creating challenging levels for each other and then watching each other get frustrated with them.
This was so addictive that Miyamoto decided to do a whole game of this flavor for the FDS.
This is what all the marketing around the FDS release is like showing people getting frustrated with the game.

That it ever got the 2 put on the name by Nintendo was both a mistake and probably a bit of a cultural miscommunication. It was always supposed to be an expansion pack.

Super Mario Bros. 2J wasn't even released on a cartridge originally. It was one of those Famicom disk system games that would be purchased from a KIOSK, and the game was advertised as Super Mario Bros. hard mode. I don;t think it was ever meant to be a full priced game. This seems like the type of game that would have gotten released as a $30.00 game, and not a $60.00 game if it was released over here.

It was in a multi game cabinet when I saw it. I remember just watching the intro.

I wouldn't go that far, it probably wouldn't be as popular or fondly remembered as our Mario 2 though

If I went around to my friend's place when I was 8 years old and I saw SMB but it had slightly different graphics and a mushroom that could kill you I would think it was pretty cool and probably ask my mum to buy it for me for my birthday or something. But "SMB2 USA" is a cool game too and I'm glad they released it but it was a bit weird compared with the original game and I didn't like how you could play as princess and luigi jumped funny, but Toad was cool.

SMB1 was a game where your character didn't matter, you were a generic man who ran to the right of the screen and jumped on things. Suddenly, there were different characters, different personalities, with different gameplay characteristics, and each level could be played differently depending on the character you chose, but, the differences were only slight, as all characters could beat all levels. If they had set characters for set levels and you didn't have the ability to choose character then I would have been more comfortable. Also, the princess was like "whoop-de-doo" I'm the princess.... people would choose princess because they "liked" princess, or they would choose "mario" because they liked Mario. But are we choosing because of the gameplay attributes or because we subjectively have a preference for different character personalities? Seemed to muddy the waters a bit too much.

You didn't like that there was a completely optional character you didn't even have to play as? That's the most moronic thing I've ever heard. That's like saying you don't like a car model because out of all the available colors there's one you don't like

Correct. Porting Doki Doki Panic was the wisest thing they ever did. It may live in the shadow of SMB3 now, but it was different and unique enough to spark players' imaginations at a very delicate period in the rejuvenating games industry.

In the modern era, it is impossible to view past entries in a vacuum, so "the masses" will always prefer the more "mainline" Mario games that have all the familiar enemies and mechanics. But speaking personally, those differences and oddities SMB2 inherited YKDDP make it stand out as a memorable experience. The Mushroom Kingdom, for all its fantasticality, is "familiar" now; the arabian-themed elements make this entry feel like a true adventure to strange new lands. Incorporating elements from a conceptually different series, while not guaranteed to succeed, in this case serendipitously created something greater, not less, than what could have been.
