Resident Evil 4 has the same level of prestige as Ocarina of Time. It revolutionized the industry, let alone the series.

    REmake1 > RE4 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Revelations >>>>> RE0

If you play RE4, be sure to use the HD Project https://www.re4hd.com/

      >Only buy one
All of them are cheap as hell and you can torrent all them if money is an issue. Said that, play RE4 and REmake 1 HD first, and actually platinum both of them, you're not done until you beat RE4 Professional and REmake 1 Invisible Enemies under five hours. After that do whatever you want, 0 is ok I guess and Rev2 has its moments.

If you're playing RE4 on PC, don't forget this

Zero is the "least good" one there. Revelations 2 campaign kinda sucks but it has Raid Mode which is fantastic.

RE1 HD Remaster. RE4's influence is largely negative and only matters from the lens of "video game historians" rather than players. RE4's OTS view was clunky for the time and the remake just feels a lot better to play due to improved camera motion. Meanwhile cinematic camera angles like those in the early Silent Hill games and Resident Evil games were honed and mastered at their time of release, rather than just providing a blueprint for other games to improve on. Lot more thought went into RE1R's map, rather than RE4's action game setpieces. You'll get a lot more out of RE1R.

      >RE4's influence is largely negative and only matters from the lens of "video game historians" rather than players
False. It's still one of the best video games of all time, and superior to any and all RE-engine demakes.

      >RE4's OTS view was clunky for the time
It was not. It felt amazing, and instantly got people imagining a classic zombie game made with it. Sadly, NO GAME has copied RE4's formula since.

      >the remake just feels a lot better to play due to improved camera motion
It does not. Besides adding tons of input lag and slooowing down all movement, the GENERIC point & shoot, auto-centered aiming that uses videogamey crosshair instead of in-world aiming device, all while enabling running and gunning at the same time, totally ruins the tension and the tactical gameplay of the original.

Not only that, but the 4's de-make censors a frick ton of stuff, and ruins the two most crucial aspects of RE4: the fun gameplay, and the fun CHARACTERS.
It also suffers of the fugly desaturation and anti-soul fog visual cancers, less reactive enemies, less gory deaths, and absolutely dreadful UIX.

dead space copied RE4's gameplay and even did it better because no quicktime events except during certain boss parts which actually made it more intense due to the presentation

          >dead space copied RE4's gameplay and even did it better
False. Dead Shit is literally just an Uncharted reskin, and the root of the modern, casual horror-shooter cancer.

It's one of the most boring games I've ever been tricked into playing. Literally just 3rd person Doom 3.

Kneecapping homies with the pistol, kicking them to the floor and spamming the knife on them until they die was "tactical". Holy moron.

    None of those.
Pirate the original RE1-3 trilogy, and play them in release order.

    Duckstation plays them all well.
    There's also PC ports.

RE4 classic for sure. You'll get the most fun and time out of it. REmake is okay but I prefer the original, and it's relatively short. RE0 is REmake but much worse, arguably the worst classic RE, lots of tedious design elements. RE Rev 2 is pretty mediocre/forgettable.

    >RE0 if you want an interesting take on the series. Flawed but over-hated.
    >REmake if you want a great fixed camera experience. One of the best in the series when it comes down to actual "horror."
    >RE4 Classic if you want one of the best TPS action games ever made.
    >RE Revelations 2 if you want to spend over 100 hours playing the Raid mode.

Classics? Get REmake, RE0 and RE4. Veronica is enjoyable, and so are 3+3 classic. RE2R is good, but takes out a ton and makes some things less enjoyable. Pretty good game, though. 7 was pretty good, but lackluster. Margaraet was the best boss. The Chris retcon is batshi moronic.
Haven't played 8, but it looks more the same in Eastern Russia with vampire breasts and werewolves and Mussou Fish Man people, and a sassy Magneto.

RE1 HD Remaster and RE4 Classic are both very good. Get both of those if possible.
Zero is a prequel to RE1 and is its own thing. its decent.
Revelations 2 won't make sense unless you beat Revelations 1 first.
